With the conclusion of Nepal’s historic Constituent Assembly election on April 10th, the country has turned a new page in its political history. Twice postponed, this first nationwide election in nearly a decade was marred with intimidation, violence, and skirmishes amongst members of rival political parties. The focus has now shifted to the newly elected members of the Assembly, who will begin the process of drafting the new Constitution in earnest. Judging by the election frenzy and the level of participation, much hope rests on the ability of the Constituent Assembly to encompass the disparate expectations and aspirations of Nepal’s diverse communities in shaping a New Nepal, the current buzzword debated widely across the country. What is the New Nepal and what are its contours? Will the Constituent Assembly be able to capture the imaginations of the ordinary Nepalis? What are the key challenges for building an inclusive, democratic, peaceful, and prosperous Nepal? Please join us to discuss these and other pertinent issues.
