Major Nepal Scams List (MNSL)

Today, we will be talking about our major (rajniti-fied) scams in our great land since the 1990s. It is about time we got back some money from our chor netas, hakims and byaparis from the past and if still alive, then they can also spend some jail time as well.

Maybe our Balen government can send these pickpockets to Harka's backyard and he can make them do some hard labor, digging ditches, carrying stones, or any manual labor which will help them to be fit and contribute something towards the development of our land!

And for those chors who have passed away, it's time to check the teen-pustey sampati bibharan, confiscate their properties and whatnot, auction them off, and use that money to maybe provide better housing, land, and even small business loans to our real sukumbaasis!

The so-called democracy arrived in Nepal in 1990 after a few visits by Indian politicians and then an economic blockade by the then Indian government. Kids then were told that this was all because the Panchey government wanted to buy some weapons from the Chinese instead of the Indians.

One fine morning, Kathmandu woke up to see the faces of the new leaders of Nepal who looked like they were simple and honest because they were all dressed up mostly in worn-out clothes and looked like they had not eaten for days. We expected them to finally give us the so-called freedom we had craved since the 1950s.

But what happened after the general election of 1991 was a different story. We had Girija Prasad, our Vanarasi babu, who spoke Nepali with his 'Indian' accent and maybe some paan left in his mouth while speaking to journos! The local bhattis and Chiya pasal members fondly called him 'Hawaldaar' and used to talk aout how even his own brothers, who had become our PMs back in the 60s did not trust this lanky bald eagle-like Vanarasi babu!

Instead of Democracy, it was more of a dhewa-crazy and the loot began and didn't stop till the Gen Z massacre in 2025! More than 35+ years of loot and here we are, with a new 'young guns' government in place and hopefully we will do the right hisab kitab of all scams since the 1990s!

I will talk about some well-known scams in our country for today because I am not yet done compiling the list of more than half a million civil servants, police wallahs, judges and teachers and hakims and thekedaars who have milked the system since the 1990s! Until the list is done, let us just focus on the major ones for now!

Let us begin with 'The Dhamija Scam' (1993):

Our Girija Babu decided to give a bideshi Dalal, Mr. Dhamija, the rights to all global sales of the Royal Nepal Airlines and the British bypari made a killing sharing some of the loot with our Girija's daughter, Sujata Koirala! The Nepali Congress had a majority government then and Girija was the Godfather and no one was held accountable for the loss to our national carrier then!

The Lauda Air Scam (2001)

Again, we have Girija Babu with the help of her daughter, Sujata, using Royal Nepal Airlines to loot some more. Our national carrier leased a Boeing 767 from Austria's Lauda Air without a tender resulting in a loss of over Rs 2 billion, while the aircraft collected dust during the majority of its lease period than actually flying real passengers! We have to thank our judges for giving those involved in this scam clean chits then.

The Sudan APC Scam (2011)

This is the worst scam ever, not in terms of losses, but where on Earth do the courts send three former IGPs or heads of police to jail while former Home Ministers got clean chits? According to my sources (different from the Kantipur folks use nowadays), then Home Minister Krishney Sitaula did all the natak of getting a dalal to buy useless Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) for peanuts and selling them to Nepal Police for hundreds of millions of Rupees! Sujata Koirala and her son-in-law, a Bangladeshi national, were rumored to have brokered the deal behind the scenes.

The Wide-Body Aircraft Scam (2018)

Once again, our national carrier gets back to the scams. This time, now NAC without the 'R' decided to purchase two Airbus A330, but instead of buying them directly from the manufacturer and getting some discounts, our hakims decided to instead buy it from some shady European company and inflate the price tag by over Rs 4 billion.
Our CIAA (not the long-lost cousin of Amriki CIA), the anti-corruption smart watchers, filed charges against our hakims then but the courts decided to punish some junior hakims rather than our mantris then and the main planners behind the scam!

The 33kg and 60kg Gold Smuggling Scams (2018 & 2023)

This was big news back then not because of 33 kg gold because we have all known that since the 90s, hundreds of kgs of gold were smuggled via the TIA every other day. But Mr. Gore and the media trial that followed reminded us of the funny TV channels across our Southern borders.

Chuda Mani Upreti aka Gorey Don even killed his friend to find out who stole the 33kg gold and even made a video of his torture thing back then in 2018. Then Maoist thulo manchey Krishna Bahadur Mahar and his sons were also found to be involved in the 60kg gold scam later in 2023. I think they will face the music soon while Gorey is already serving his sentence!

The Lalita Niwas Land Grab Scam (2019-)

We still haven't figured out how to send Makune and even Baburam Bhattarai and the jagga dalals to prison for this scam. Min Bahadur Gurung became infamous with this scam because he had bought ropanis of public land near our PM residence.

The CIAA decided not to charge the two former PM because they think cabinet decisions are holy and untouchable. I think our Bhatbhateni sahuji is still out of on bail for this scam. Let's hope our courts will figure out some prison time for all the dalals, byaparis and even netas involved in this scam!

The Omni COVID-19 Procurement Scam (2020)

Now, comes the Oli happy days of corruption and apart from his own take on how to fight COVID and other Oli remedies for better health, his government was involved in making tons of dough by allowing an IT company to import medical kits and other stuff from China during the lockdown days. I think the company got blacklisted and the contract was terminated but no one went to jail for awarding the contracts in the first place!

The Giri Bandhu Tea Estate Land Swap Scam (2021-)

Again, Oli starts to look like our 'Girija' Babu of the 90s with scams left and right. We have to thank our former gold smuggler and now Samsung Smart Phones ko main dealer in Nepal, our Deepak Malhotra Dai and the chiya bagan sahujis for this scam!

Oli Chor's government decided to amend the Land Act and allow owners of massive tea estates to swap their prime tea estates for sasto jagga somewhere else so that they could sell it for a hundred billion Rupees! I think our courts called it wrong and decided to annul Oli's decision to do some jagga hera-feri but our chor netas of old school parties have been trying to still do the jagga deals by bringing in new local land laws and what not.

The Fake Bhutanese Refugee Scam (2023)

Now, this has to be the 'laaj-mardo' scam of the decade or century or since PN decided to unify Nepal for better or worse! Our then Home Minister Bal Krishney Khand, then DPM Top Bahadur Rayamajhi and even the Home Secretary Tek Narayan Pandey were involved in this scam because some of our dalals had decided to offer fake Bhutanese Refugee cards for Nepali citizens for lakhs of Rupees!

I think Khand is out on bail while Topey Dai is still in jail and Arzoo Didi who was reported to have made a few Karods on the deal, is having a vacation with her hubby, our very own Sheroo Dai in Hong Kong! And those who paid the dalals to get their US papers as fake Bhutanese refugees will never get their money back!

The TERAMOCS Telecom Scam (2024-)

Our former Sanchar Mantri, Mohan Bahadur Basnet and our hakims at NTA were involved in this scam. NTA is our regulatory authority for all things telecom but it seems that they forgot to follow due process and decided to wire 3 billion Rupees to some offshore company for a system that was secretly designed to intercept our private communications!

Our CIAA folks have filed a case against our mantri and some hakims and let's hope they face the music soon!
