Is it safe to travel using TPS? What should I except at immigration check point while coming back? Any input would be much appreciated.

Yes its safe! Once you arrive at the port of entry they will take you to the secondary inspection room, they may ask questions regarding your travel and they will stamp both your Travel Doc and passport with Paroled Stamp.

I have known a lot of people in TPS who did not have any issues at the immigration check point. As long as you have travel document, you should be fine as long as you don't have any police records.
