So it looks like some major banks in India like ICICI bank offer about 7.50% Interest rates on Fixed deposits. But Nepali banks offer in 3-4% range. Why is that ? I thought it would be similar to Indian Banks.

It would be nice if we had bigger banks like ICICI bank in Nepal where everything can be done online. I would put my money into those Fixed accounts if it was available. Unfortunately Nepal is way behind in technology and other many other resources lack in Nepal.

Banks make way more money off lending than 'borrowing'. that's the reason why you rarely see American banks offering decent rates for savings account.

It is called supply and demand.

Long time ago when I was in Banking : I recommended that there should not be Saving account and pay interest. Saving account should be similar to Checking account like US.
ICIS bank are utilizing their Saving to Various loan activities with higher Interest rate than CD/Fixed Deposit.
To some point people may put money in reputed bank even the interest rate is lower because of security.
Those who are offering Higher Interest rate may be investing in extremely risky investment like Barnie Madoff.

You have read may finance business were involved on such activities and filed bankruptcy.
