I used to hear those two words in Kathmandu, when I was a kid. Growing up, afterwards, I didn't hear those words; maybe because almost every one of my friend were from the same place..Kathmandu. Till this date, none of my friends use this word or has used it as far as I know. When I was visiting few parts of Nepal, after my college, I heard those words being mentioned many times...mostly by the dudes who wanted to show off over there village counterparts-in village.

I now hear those words frequented in Sajha every single day. My theory is that only those people use these two words, "Pakhe" and "Khate", who they think they are referring to.

To me, Pakhe means one from Pakha..nothing wrong with that. Kathmandu was like a Pakha. Khate was the word used for street children and there's nothing to hate about these kids but to sympathize with their condition. Why these words are used in derogetory terms, I don't know. What I know is people using terms just haven't been out too much, lack something and they try to fill that void by calling others these words; before the others use the word in them..or so they think.

Stop using those two words. If you use those words, it tells more about you than the guys you are using it for. Grow up, have some brain and don't be that backwards...the world has moved way ahead, don't drag us back. And for everybody's sake, don't embarass us!!!

I also believe in the same way as you do. I am not praising myself or may   be i am  stupid to say this in this forum but i came from pakha. I was almost street children with nothing to loose once upon a time. Now, here I am in US. About to finish my grad. So, when I read these words so cheaply used, I fell sorry for those people who thinks they are superior than other.
My childhood wasnt like most of yours. By the time some of you sleep in comfortable bed in your Ac room, I had problem in finding the place to rest my body.
so the graph of life is not always linear. You may in the position you never thought about. I just finished reading a book by Hari Bansha Achary ( china harayeko manchhe).I suggest you guys to read that.

The real pakheys are those who are from the city and call others pakhey but they themselves are some losers with a pathetic undergrad degree or no degree and are proud of making 10 bucks an hours working for some south asian.

Some local guy from ktm asked me once " what the potato tree looked like" that was pretty pakhey for me.

Much respect to you geet_sangeet.
Tiger, as always, very well put.
SAP Dude, I think I agree with your sentiments. Although, I still won't use that word for anybody. Like Geology Tiger said, let's call them somebody else instead of Khate and Pakhey.

Texasranger, I'd respond to you. But then you will get hurt and start calling me names and not even care to think about what you are saying. So what's the point?

Just try to understand the difference between "khatey", "Pakhey" and other colorful words you picked and you will understand what most of us are talking about here. But then again, a kid who watches the video (or even knows about the video) you posted, can probably not understand the argument.

Kiddo,

I like the word Pakhey...but i use it differently. A pakhey to me is the person who refuses to intake "information" and come up with his own prejudgement/steriotypes and thinks himself higher than the others.

From my experience, most pakheys do come from the cities. A fking "kuwa ko bhaguto" pakhey who thinks higer of himself for being born in the city but has zero knowledge of the world and the surroundings.

Khate on the other hand stands for a "bum" and we have lots of Khates who also qualify to be called pakhey that hail from the cities. Those khates live off of their roomates, girlfriend, or their parents money. They do not have permanent address and if someone does not take care of them they become bum/khate.

Homeless children on the streets are not the real khates its the ones who always find a host to live off of.

"Kathmandu was like a Pakha."

nepalilaure
Educate me here. When somebody says Danda-Pakha, Danda means hills and Pakha means the plain below the hill; isn't it? I wouldn't call Kathmandu a hill, it's a valley and is surrounded by hills. So wouldn't it be more close to being called a Pakha? Let me know if I got this wrong.

I am afraid you guys aren't getting our gist here. I agree with magorkhe in that you can't take everything said in literal meaning. I use swear words every now and then myself. The point we were trying to make was that "Pakhe" and "Khate" shouldn't be an offensive word as it is now being used. Would you agree? I mean, why a geographic orientation should be a bad thing? Also, why is Khate a bad thing?? My point is that the people who use it as derogatory terms appear to me are the ones they are referring to (in this context, one who lags behind the modern pace of the world). I have never heard these words said in an educated/sophisticated circle.
