KATHMANDU: Two young women have been arrested in Kathmandu for luring people into a honey trap to demand property. The Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office (KVCIO) of Nepal Police arrested the two women on Wednesday for being involved in the honey trap scheme.

The arrested individuals are Mamata Tamang, 34, originally from Damoura in Godawari Municipality-10, Kailali, and Anchal Shrestha, 34, originally from Sallaghari in Bhaktapur Municipality-17, currently residing in Handigaun, Kathmandu.

The police have stated that the two women initially connected with the victim through Facebook and built a relationship. They then invited the victim to a hotel in Thamel, Kathmandu, where they served food and intoxicating substances. While the victim was unconscious, they took explicit photos and videos of him

Subsequently, they began blackmailing the victim using those photos and videos. Initially, they threatened him by saying, “You must provide a house and 4 annas of land in Kathmandu, or we will file a sexual assault case against you,” according to the police investigation.

The police reported that the two women forced the victim to issue a check for Rs 500,000.

After receiving this information, the police arrested both women on Wednesday from Hanumansthan, Kathmandu. The police also seized a check issued by the victim from Prime Commercial Bank in the name of Anchal. Additionally, the police have taken both women's mobile phones into custody.

Both women have been sent to the Kathmandu District Police Range for further investigation and legal action, as confirmed by Superintendent of Police (SP) Kaji Kumar Acharya of the KVCIO.

Looks like Bhotenese. Last time one guy visiting KTM from USA got sucked in this trap. He thought he was getting girl in his hotel room but she came with company and looted him and asked him to pay 500,000. When you go to night clubs don’t tell the girls that you are visiting from the US.

If someone finds themselves in a honey trap situation like the one described, the right approach is to act quickly, stay calm, and protect themselves legally and physically. Here’s a step-by-step outline of what to do:

1. Prioritize Safety

  • If you’re still in the compromising environment (hotel, private space), get to a safe, public, and well-lit area as quickly as possible.
  • Avoid further contact with the perpetrators.

2. Preserve Evidence

  • Do not delete any messages, call records, or social media chats with the suspects.
  • Keep any bank transaction proof, checks, or demands they made.
  • If intoxicants were involved, seek a medical report immediately—it may support your case.

3. Do Not Give in to Blackmail

  • Once you give them what they want, they may keep demanding more.
  • Instead, disengage from private negotiations and involve the authorities.

4. Contact Law Enforcement Immediately

  • In Nepal, this would mean going to your nearest police station or contacting the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office (KVCIO) or Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police.
  • Provide all evidence: chats, call recordings, hotel receipts, CCTV if available.

5. Avoid Confrontation

  • Do not try to meet the perpetrators to “settle things” or retrieve material—they may use it against you or put you in further danger.

6. Get Legal Support

  • Engage a lawyer immediately to protect against any false cases (such as fabricated sexual assault charges).
  • A lawyer can also guide you on filing a fraud, blackmail, or extortion case.

7. Inform Trusted People

  • Let a close friend or family member know what happened for moral and logistical support.
  • They can accompany you when dealing with police.

8. Consider Cyber Crime Reporting

  • If the threats involve sharing photos or videos online, this also falls under cybercrime.
  • In Nepal, you can contact the Cyber Bureau at Bhotahity, Kathmandu.

9. Protect Your Online Presence

  • Block the perpetrators on all platforms.
  • Change your passwords and enable two-factor authentication.

10. Mental & Emotional Recovery

  • Honey trap incidents are emotionally taxing. Consider counseling to deal with trauma, shame, or anxiety.
  • Remember: this is a crime against you, not your fault.
