Here comes the Home Minister

When the media reported that Sudan Gurung would be our Home Minister in Balen's cabinet, many of our political analysts and cadres of old political parties were up in arms and were making fun of Balen's choice. Some have called him a CIA agent, some have made fun of how a waterboy became the face of the Gen Z movement and some just were just pissed that a young lad was going to be in-charge of the Home Ministry.

The reason RSP won with Balen as the PM candidate was because many of us felt that they would do justice to the families of those massacred by then Oli government. The RSP nearly won a two-third majority in the House and Balen shocked us all by thrashing Oli at his home turf.

The Balen government has been congratulated for at least having 33% of women in the cabinet and some of our women ministers do come from MARGlNalized communities as well. The Balen government received five out of five on this one. The first decision of the cabinet meeting was to follow up on the recommendations made by the Karki Commission and it was a smart move not to touch the security personnel who were recommended for punishment for now and leave it to another commission to figure out what kind of action would be appropriate for our former IGP and the CDO and other security personnel.

Kamal Thapa, who was our Home Minister during then King Gyanendra's solo rule, was busy tweeting about how this is a political vendetta and warned the new government of the consequences of such action. Well, Kamal Thapa also needs to be held accountable for killing 19 protesters more than twenty years ago while heading the Home Ministry and for his misuse of authority when he was in power.

It did not take even 12 hours for our new Home Minister to go after Oli and Lekhak. Some of our so-called high-profile lawyers were blabbering about how due process was not followed when our Home Minister decided to send police personnel to Oli and Lekhak's home to arrest them early in the morning.

The UML cadres have long been warning all of us that they will take to the streets and burn this country down if Oli is taken into custody, even long before the election. Today, it has happened and we will know by tomorrow if the judiciary will put them in police custody for a few more days or will let them stay at home while deciding on what kind of punishment they deserve.

Sudan Gurung is here not to make Rs 50 lakhs per day from extortion from the public which will then flow to the Home Minister's wallet like the previous Home Ministers have done. Sudan Gurung has only one agenda for now, which is to make sure those responsible for the massacre of school kids during the Gen Z protest are held accountable.

For the first time in 35 years, we now have a bold and courageous Home Minister who is not afraid of his safety and the consequences that will follow when those who have misused their authority are finally arrested. We have not held anyone accountable since the 1990s be it those during the Panchey regime or Prachada or Deuba for the loss of 17,000 lives after.

Hope the RSP government will take its time to follow up on all corruption scandals in this country since the 1990s and investigate the illegal wealth of all our politicians, sarkari hakims and even shady byaparies who have become billionaires by engaging in giving bribes to those in power and grabbing public land and evading taxes.

The UML cadres will be on the streets from tomorrow onwards. They will gherao all of our District Administration Offices all around the country. They did burn some tyres and gathered a few folks in Kathmandu and in some cities across the nation today but it seems that the Nepali Congress is not that eager to be as aggressive as the UML for now.

Our Home Minister is trying his best to set an example in this land that from now onwards, those who misuse power will be held accountable. Our UML cadres accuse the Home Minister for turning Nepal into Pakistan and before the election, they were the ones who thought the election would bear similar results like in Bangladesh.

This is not the 'old' Nepal where in the name of Loktantra, loot-tantra flourished instead and those in power got away with killing protestors, be it the Tharu or the Madeshi movement or the Rajabadi protestors and the Gen Z protests as well.

The families of those killed during the Gen Z protest have thanked Sudan Gurung for taking this bold decision to arrest our former killer PM and Home Minister as well. Let us see how it goes in the coming days. But for now, let us be proud that at least we have someone heading the Home Ministry who is not afraid to do his job. May Lord Pashupatinath, Lord Buddha, Allah, Christ and all other higher beings protect him and all of us as well.
