A silver sedan seen speeding on Cortland Street before deadly crash

BERNAL HEIGHTS, CA, (October 04, 2025) - A 30-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run crash early Saturday morning in Bernal Heights, police said.

hit and run crash(GoFundMe)Binod Budhathoki, 30, was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver early Saturday morning in Bernal Heights, police said.

The incident happened shortly after 2 a.m.

GoFundMe campaign started on Oct. 4 by the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) California identified the victim as Binod Budhathoki. According to the post, Binod was on the way home from celebrating a religious festival when he was struck by a vehicle at Cortland and Anderson streets. Tragically, he died from injuries.

Binod is survived by his 8-year-old daughter.

Surveillance footage from the area showed a silver sedan speeding down Cortland Street prior to the crash.

This is an ongoing investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

California law clearly says that fleeing the scene of a crash is a crime. Still, some drivers choose to drive off, jeopardizing the lives of victims. If you are involved in a hit-and-run, the law says to share information and notify emergency services. Most importantly, timely medical assistance can save someone’s life. Between 2013 and 2019, hit-and-run crashes accounted for about 20% of pedestrian fatalities, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a hit-and-run case and prove negligence,” said Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney and a Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“Road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting are all possible contributing factors that are considered and must thoroughly be examined. These procedures are necessary for helping those who have lost a loved one receive the justice that they deserve.”

Added Bond, the national analyst for The Legal Advocate, “The driver always has to take great care behind the wheel.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Binod Budhathoki may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident such as this incident.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“We understand just what families are forced to go through, and having their rights protected is vital. A wrongful death lawyer will stay updated on the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”
