Sanskriti Announces an evening of Kathak & Bharatnatyam

Classical Dances from North & South India to be performed at Lighthouse Theatre


New York, NY, September 29, 2006 – Sanskriti, an institute for Indian culture in New York City presents an enthralling evening which brings together the two most popular major dance forms to emerge from India.

World acclaimed artists Archana Jogelkar and Lakshmi Vishwanathan will perform at the Lighthouse Theatre in New York City on September 29th 2006.
Along with them we have Savitri Ramanand (Vocalist), C. G Balachandran on the Mrdangam and Anantha Padmanabhan on the Violin.
ARTISTS:
Archana Joglekar
Renowned film actress and a celebrated Kathak dancer of India. Her perfection, capacity to perform intricate footwork with unbelievable ease, and Abhinaya is of par excellence. She is one of those rare artists whose performance excels in technique, at the same time she touches the heart of the viewer. She is also an accomplished choreographer in the field of live state shows, films, and television.


Lakshmi Vishwanathan
A renowned Bharathanatyam dancer and choreographer, Lakshmi Vishwanathan has received many awards including the Tamil Nadu State Kalaimamani and Sangeet Natak Akademi awards. She has performed solo for twenty five years. A trained singer, she also holds a gold medal in English Literature and has written extensively on art and culture for The Hindu.

An Institute for Indian Culture

Sanskriti is an institute for Indian culture in New York City, dedicated to the children of the greater New York area. Sanskriti's instruction will instill in its students a deep appreciation of India's heritage with the following objectives:
• To inspire a commitment among students to take traditional Indian art to mainstream America.
• To create a passion and understanding of the modern India
• To support the process of building bridges between the two countries in a multicultural setting.
The institute strives to integrate the ethos of Indian dance, music, history, literature, art and philosophy into the lives of all students. A few will embrace one or more facets of their instruction as a professional career, but above all, individuals will have the knowledge and understanding to appreciate the depth of India's cultural legacy.
Swati Bhise, President and Director of Performing Arts, is an acclaimed Bharatanatyam dancer who has performed throughout India, Europe and the United States.Swati is an avid teacher and has conducted workshops at leading institutions including Columbia University, New York University, the education department at the American Museum of Natural History, New York and the Lincoln Center Institute.
Since 1997, Swati has presented Bharatanatyam to students at schools in the Bronx, Queens and Manhattan in conjunction with Symphony Space's CAP program. She was recently selected as the New York correspondent for Sruti, the leading dance magazine in India, based in Chennai. As Director of Performing Arts of the institute, Swati will be responsible for curriculum design and development of the core program and community offerings.


Abha (Bunty) Sawhney, Executive Director: A trained lawyer, Bunty has been in publishing and media for various magazines such as India Today and The Statesman. She has been very actively involved in the promotion of arts and culture in the New York tri-state area. She has raised funds for several non-profits, including Save Space. She also runs her own non-profit, Festival India.
