Title: Plants and people of Nepal A scientist's understanding of plants, people, culture and politics Speaker: Dr Narayan Prasad Manandhar Date: August 28, 2003 Time: 7:15 PM Location: Room 105, William James Hall, 33 Kirkland St., Harvard University, Cambridge Synopsis: The presentation will cover a remarkable journey from a Nepali village to publishing of the ethnobotanical tome on Nepal called Plants and People of Nepal (Timber Press, February 2002). The topics covered will be as diverse as what it means to be a scientist in Nepal and what hurdles exist, which would shed light on the Nepali culture, bureaucracy, to the vast treasure of botanical wonders of Nepal. This indigenous wisdom of plants in Nepal is dying with the older generation, so we are fortunate that Manandhar has preserved this ethnobotanical heritage for posterity. At the conclusion of presentation, autographed books will be available for purchase (at 30% discounted price of $47.50). Speaker: Dr Naryan Prasad Manandhar was born in 1941 in a village in Janakpur, Nepal and did his Bachelors at Tri-Chandra College, Masters in India and PhD in France. In over 30 years, Dr Manandhar botanically and ethnographically explored every corner of Nepal (mostly on foot) and established the only Herbarium in Nepal. He is recipient of Harshberger Award for Excellence in Ethnobotany and also has 4 books and 60 journal articles to his credit. Important notice: For those who did not know, Chhalphal is best taken with refreshments and titbits provided on location
