Nepal's New Constitution: Opportunities and Challenges A Conversation Organized by the Boston Nepali Youth Movement.
This conference provides youth in the greater Boston area an opportunity for engagement around crucial socio-political issues that are relevant to the constitution of Nepal, which is being promulgated on May 28! It is an opportunity for the collective voicing of youth opinions about the Constitution of Nepal, which will help provide feedback into the constitution-writing process.
The conference is part of, and organized by, the Boston Nepali Youth Movement, which is a non-partisan youth-led movement for engagement and activism regarding socio-political issues concerning Nepal.
The conference will focus on four themes relevant to Nepal's New Constitution:
1) Federalism 2) Decentralization 3) Diversity 4) Rights

11:15- 11:30 AM: Welcome and Sign In
Attendees will be asked to pick their top choice out of total four questions addressing each of the issues mentioned above. Based on their topic of interest, they will partake in the appropriate discussion group.
11:30 – 11:35 AM: Introduction to the Boston Yuwa Movement By Pukar Malla
11:35 – 11:50 AM: Keynote Speech By Bhojraj Pokharel, former Election Commissioner of Nepal
11:50 – 12:20 PM: Issues concerning Nepal’s Constitution – Research Findings By the BNYM Research Team

12:30 – 1:15 PM: Panel Discussion Our panel members include constitutional experts, Nepali academics, and other experts with experience in Nepali civil and government services.
Panelist Bios:
Mr. Bhoj Raj Pokharel -------------------------- Bhojraj Pokharel has over 30 years experience working at a senior level in the fields of governance, policy formulation, development, management and project implementation for the government of Nepal and for a wide range of national and international organizations. As the Chief Election Commissioner of Nepal (2006-2009), Mr. Pokharel successfully conducted the historic Constituent Assembly Election on April 10th 2008 – the first post-conflict election held in Nepal.
Mr. Ramesh Sharma ------------------------ Ramesh Sharma, an avid supporter of republican democracy and former chairman of Gorkhapatra Corporation Employee Association, has had an outstanding career in journalism in Nepal, during which he has managed many successful dailies and weeklies, and has led noteworthy political organizations like ‘Jayatu Sanskritam’.
Prof. Bed P Giri ------------------ Dr. Giri teaches English at Dartmouth College, specializing in postcolonial literature and theory. He holds degrees from Tribhuwan University in Nepal and the University of Virginia. His interests include the literature of displacement, 20th Century British Fiction, and literary theory. An avid supporter of democracy in Nepal, Dr. Giri has been actively voicing the concerns of the Nepali Diaspora and also serves as the Vice President of the Society for Philosophy and Literary Studies (Kathmandu), an affiliate of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies.
Prof. Shiva Gautam ----------------------- Prof. Gautam is an Associate Professor (Biostatistics) at Harvard Medical School, and a Biostatistician for Harvard Catalyst (a pan-Harvard University enterprise). He is also involved in educational as well as health-related issues of Nepal. He conceptualized and coordinated logistics for a pilot heart study in Nepal. He has spearheaded an e-library/e-infrastructure project in Nepali schools. He was involved with the Kathmandu University Medical School’s teaching activities that included teaching, collecting teaching materials and equipment, and inviting professors to visit and teach at KU. He is a member of several Nepal-related organizations in USA and Canada including America Nepal Medical Foundation (ANMF). He is an active member of NRN.

1:20 – 2:00 PM: Group Discussions Group discussions will be organized around the four topic areas of the conference. While facilitated by the Boston Nepali Youth Movement, it is really about proactive audience participation. At the end of the discussion, each group will be asked to present a one-sentence thesis of their discussion to the larger conference audience.
