Gay communist joins Nepalese parliament

Nepal's new parliament will include the country's first openly gay politician who is representing a small communist party.

Sunil Babu Pant is also head of the Blue Diamond Society, the only gay rights group in Nepal.

Mr Pant says he will work to ensure that Nepal's new constitution protects sexual groups, people with disabilities, and small Indigenous castes.

Polls for the new constituent assembly were central to a peace deal between Maoists and mainstream parties that ended a decade long civil war in Nepal.
