I feel british universities in general is better than american universities. I was going through the top 50 universities in the world where i found there were 26 american universities and 8 british universities. It may seem there are more american universities in top 50 but the realitiy is in america there are over 50 000 univeristies believe it or not . Compare that to britian where there is about 500 univerisity. Agree in america there are some very good univeristy but then there are numerous awful universities . Since the univerisities in britain is so less the rivalry between these university is fierce so there is a competition to maintain the standard with the rivals. If you take out random sample of univerisity from america only one out of 100 univeristy can be considered very good, where as in britian the number reduces to four or five.

I have some serious doubt over The Times Higher Education Supplement ranking. It's kinda biased towards the European universities, that's why 26 univeristies out of 50 world univerisity are from Europe in that list. And, few doubtful names are here: 1) No 17: Beijing University As far as I know the Unversity of Tokyo is far more better than Beijing University in each and every decipline. And, Beijing University doesn't show up even in top 100 among in another list (http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2005/ARWU2005TOP500list.htm) which is prepared by a chinese unviversity itself. And, another thing which really makes me laugh in that ranking is that it has placed IIT, India above Standford University in Technology category. In that case, why should TOP IITans go to USA for grad studies, rather than studying at IIT itself? I am just wondering...anyone can help me here..please.. :)

I don't think you can compare the universities of developed nations in totality. USA, like other nations, has excellent schools as well as mediocre ones. But, in general, I know for sure that the American Higher Education is the best in the world, bar none.

Sorry about the mistake i read the post again. 50000 was for whole american continent including south american and caribbean islands. But i wont shy away from accepting my mistake. but even if u take the accreditaed ones of about 4200 which is a significantly larger than british ones. I think for the UK with a handful of universites to be in there with 8 out of 50 is incredible which proves in general british universities are better. America have few very good univerisites amist of crap universities.

I think it is more important which university you are studying rather than where are u studying. I would rather study in tokyo univeristy ( great university) any than a very poor university in USA. Bottom line is its down to ranking of individual university where they u are studying rahter than british and american. Some of the australian universities are pretty high in ranking as well. I would easily leave my current university for studying in university of sidney although i am studying at one of the top universtity in UK but it still is less than university of sidney.

Bidhan, you are right. It really doesn't matter where your university is; the thing what really matters is how good university is and its recognition. There are more craps in US than good ones. For my grad studies, I had to choose between a US and a Canadian University. And, I went for Canadian one becaue of higher ranking and better recognition.

If you are really competent, you just need one university for you. You don't need to look all the way to bottom of ranking. Comparision of universities is just like comparing you with other students around the world. So, based on the fact that there may be millions of better students than you in the world, you can not say that you are dummy or crap or whatever. To the best of my knowledge, almost all acredited universities in the US are equitably respected in their standing. Harvard won't reject you if you are really good no matter which of these universities you graduated from. From my experience of student and professional life in the USA, regardless of where they graduated from, almost every persons here seem to be very successful in performing their task. I believe this is because of their education system. Also, most of the US companies, before hiring you, look for what skills and expertise you have with you rather than where did you graduated from and what was your GPA etc.

Well, you are all right. It does not matter where your university is, rather how your university ranks. So it befits more if you compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges. If you are going to compare the venerable Oxford and Cambridge to American Universities, then compare them to Ivy League schools - namely Harvard, MIT, Yale, Princeton, yada yada yada. Besides Ivy League, there are fair number of schools that are outstanding but lesser known - Rice, Williams, SMU, Carnegie Mellon, Brandeis, Grinnell come to mind. As far as undergraduate studies is concerned, the liberal arts education, extra-curricular programs, sheer academic environment that most good schools provide in the US make their product the very best in the world. I don't know about Australian Universities to talk about them. Canadian Universities are mostly government funded, and not too many in number. Those too vary in quality - I am guessing here - UBC, Queens, UofT, Simon Frasier, University of Waterloo probably rank at top tier and might be comparable to Ivy League schools in some departmental categories. I heard some, not all, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are excellent, and some students do prefer to go there over MIT and CalTech for undergraduate level as they provide extremely rigorous mathematical training. However, do keep in mind that for the graduate level, most of them come to the US school. Also remember, going to Oxford or Harvard or Waterloo is merely a probability indicator, not guarantee, of success in later life. I know of many who got Ivy League education and are dismal failures and even more who went to so called so-so schools and became highly successful in their professional and personal life. Well, there you go, for what it's worth, mero dui kaudi ko kura.

Ranking apart, the population of US is 295,734,134 and that of UK is 60,441,457. So, the population of US being around 5 times that of Britain, the number of universities in US as compared to that of UK is very much justified. As far as graduate studies is concerned US and Canadian system has mandatory coursework to be taken while British system doesn't. Personally, I go for North American system for graduate studies. Good ranking of your institute helps but is not a soul formula for success. Thats my dui kaudi ko kura.

For me, the university from where I graduated is the best in the world............Saying that that university is better than this, I would not definitely repeat a course there again...........the main thing is decent job....once you settle thats fine.............I really do not care.
