Here's one possible scenario:

1. All this demonstration fizzles out after few days.
2. We are back to way we were last month.

Here's second possible scenario:

1. King gives in, but only a little.
2. Leaders of SPA strike a deal with the king to end the demonstrations.
3. King declares a PM from among SPA leaders, restores the parliament, cosmetically democracy is back on track, so to speak. International community hails it as progress and shuts up.
4. But King retains behind the scene power.
5. Maoists get outraged and attack some outposts.
6. Army does the same thing.
7. A facade of peace is restored in the valley, but not outside.

Here's a third possible scenario:

1. Army throws in the towel.
2. King quits and leaves the country.
3. Maoists swarm in and take control.
4. SPA gets sidelined.
5. Referendum gets held to decide if Nepal should be multi-party republic or single-party communist nation.
6. Maoists, with all their resources, turn Nepal into another Cuba.

Here's a fourth possible scenario:

1. Army quits, King quits, Nepal gets declared as republic.
2. BUT, chaos reigns supreme.
3. After prolonged hardship and political confusion, an intermediate ad hoc government is formed with Maoists as part of it.
4. Everybody disagrees with everybody.
5. Violence ensues, demonstrations continue, International community intervenes and fails.
6. Nepal becomes another Sierra Leone.

Democracy has to be restored. even though i hate the each and every thing about political parties may i add so called, the king has to strike a deal with the parties for a long term peace.i hate to say but this curretn sitatuion clearly shows that the people of nepal are so easily maneuverable and beleive whatever they are told even if it is by the same people who are responsible for the whole situation of nepal.
in anyways king shouldnot and cannot take the direct rule of the country for long. the king is good when he is a ceremonial monarch .

just spare a thought for the poor police and army ...what in the hell are they supposed to do. catch thieves, fight maoist, control riot........and what not. the king has to give in and so should the parties.....if not :

forget the word democracy in nepal....as CHATMANDUDE suggested in the third scenario, nepal becomes CUBA...no...... North Korea.

Here's a fifth possible scenario:

1. King relents.
2. UN or similar international body is brought in.
3. Constituent Assembly held, referendum on what kind of government Nepalis want is held.
4. Jimmy Carter and good folks like him come to help with the referendum.
5. (a) King stays as constitutional figure with severely limited power. Maoists become one of the major parties.
5. (b)Nepal becomes a republic. Maoists stay true to their promise and becomes one of the major parties in the democracy.
5. (c)Nepal becomes a republic, but the chaos continues with one government after another.

It is likely, 5th possible scenerio is to be seen in Nepal soon. It is pleasent, too. Hope , going throug and happening of all these 5 points, none can lead Nepal towards chaos and darkness. Real pewer of people is seen in last few days. The same powerful peoples are the watchdog of democracy and have to riegn the country.

chatmandude, i totally agree with you that one of those possibilities are highly likely to happen, though i also noticed that none of your possibilities says thet we have a chance ( atleat a little) for a successful democracy, arnn't you being a little too much pessimistic , atleast there should be one up their saying some positive outcome, like say
The Kings gives in, agrees to hold an election for constitutent assembly , maoist agree to join the election , we hold election with UN monitoring, the constutuent assembly unanimously declares nepal as a Republic and then we have a normal Nepal after that with new leaders.( that's ahope atleast , arn't we all fighting in our own way to achieve that).
