Police My Friend!
Well, it's the Nepal Police in the news again. Most of us, or maybe all of us, see our men and women in blue as folks who think they are above the law and need better training in controlling their mount, anger, and weapons as well.
This time, Nepal Police wants to look at your SMS and snoop around digitally to listen to your late-night conversations with your besties! Our policemen want the government to allow them legally to perform real-time wiretapping on our phone calls and other digital communications as well.
Our men in blue want to crack down on scams and other criminal networks because the tech-savvy criminals use all kinds of apps, leaving our law enforcement agencies in the dark. If they are allowed to listen to all private conversations in the name of investigation, then God helps us all as we speak in code words and emojis!
I think our police wallahs do need some powers to go after criminals, as drug cartels, cyber criminals and international crime networks do use encrypted apps to do their nasty work, and waiting for court warrants could allow them to get away with their nataks.
We have seen earlier nataks by our police wallahs and our National Investigation Department (NID), the Guptachar Bivagh eggheads who have misused such technology to snoop on opposition wallahs and activists. We know that these folks were snooping into private call logs for political reasons and sometimes even for extortion and whatnot.
If some of us do have the time, then read Article 28 of our constitution, please! It strictly guarantees the privacy of our stuff, be it our body or data or whatever. I guess those in power still think this constitution thing is just a simple suggestion book instead of the real damn thing that keeps the country from falling into total anarchy!
So, let us not allow full-on power to our Nepal Police, or else it can be used not only as a political weapon but also to blackmail and harass anyone. I think in the past, our Supreme Court did stop illegal phone tapping, and in the end, it's the courts who can protect us from any interference in our freedom.
I don't think our security personnel have won enough of our hearts yet when it comes to serving the public, and handing them the keys to snoop on our digital lives is a bad idea and a great disaster if that happens.
