Mafia Manpower

We may have had a new government since March, but it's the same old mafia byaparis and corrupt hakims running the game behind the scenes. And this new government is getting attacked by all those tied to the loot system since the 90s.

Our manpower sahujis have their own association, the Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies (NAFEA), and more than 1,000 manpower agencies are members and have had their share of fun since we started exporting our folks rather than products!

Now, these NAFEA wallahs have decided to halt all manpower work just because the government decided to take some light action against 700+ manpower agencies for continuing to loot the youth seeking foreign employment. It seems that many of our manpower agencies continue to charge more and then send our folks through Indian airports to get around the bans on certain countries.

The manpower association now has its own 15-point demand and tells the government that they will stop all their export activities until the government allows them to continue to charge extra when many visas are free. Yes, these agencies need to survive, and they play a vital role in procuring demands and interviewing our folks and sending them abroad, but these chors have been looting for decades, and they want to charge a year's salary to our young folks instead of certain fixed rates.

According to media reports, there was a 20% drop in new labor approvals, which is like a hundred thousand young folks staying at home instead of getting a hard sun tan in the Gulf! Remittances are what is keeping us alive. More than 60% of households depend on the dough sent by their loved ones to survive in this country!

Our manpower sahujis argue that the 'free visa, free ticket' policy creates more problems and prevents them from extorting young ones! They want a free ride because that's the way they roll. In the past, manpower sahujis had to pay chiya kharcha not only to our labor and immigration departments but also to local toley gundas, then to politically affiliated mundrey gundas, then to the netas and political parties as well. If they are already saving a lot now, why are they still looking to take more?

Today, we have more than 5 million folks abroad. 80% went for work while the rest went for studies or something else. More than 50% went through manpower agencies. If we just do some math, then even if 2.5 million folks paid US$2,000 to go abroad, then it's already US$ 5 billion. The actual figure might be four times more!

It seems that manpower sahujis are the ones who made it big by staying in Nepal and sending our young ones abroad. These byaparis ride around in luxury SUVs costing a few crores while the young land who paid them Rs 6 lakhs to go to Romania will barely make much and will spend a year or more just to pay off the loan taken from the meter byazis!

Everybody wants a better life, and when they can't get it here in their own land, then they have no choice but to go abroad. We cannot stop our folks from leaving for better opportunities. And if we do it right, it will take us at least a few decades before the next generation can work here at home and make the same money as they would in foreign lands!
