Was Jesus really an historical figure?

by Virendra Parekh     on 25 Dec 2013

“Let me tell you at the outset that Jesus is no mythological mumbo-jumbo like your Rama and Krishna, and even Buddha. On the contrary, he was a solid historical figure whose miracles were witnessed and vouchsafed by many contemporary people,” said a Jesuit missionary to Sita Ram Goel. Let us have a closer look at this ‘solid historical figure’.

The historicity of Jesus as described in the gospels has been one of the principal dogmas of all Christian denominations. Now, as Ram Swarup used to say, historicity by itself does not mean much. You and I are historical persons, but that fact by itself does not confer greatness or any other virtue on us. However, when historicity of the founder is touted as a point of superiority, we are inclined to examine it a little more closely.

The missionary propaganda would leave the impression that Jesus was a mighty figure who took the world by storm as soon as he appeared on the scene. However, the ‘solid historical figure’ melts into thin air at the first brush with modern historical research. Biblical and Christological research undertaken in the West during the last two and a half centuries has cast doubt on the historicity of every aspect of the life of Jesus, including his existence as a historical person.

Albert Schweitzer, the world famous theologian and missionary, admitted that, “There is nothing more negative than the result of the critical study of the Life of Jesus. The Jesus of Nazareth who came forward publicly as the Messiah, who preached the ethic of the Kingdom of the God, who founded the Kingdom of Heaven upon earth and died to give his work final consecration, never had any existence. This image has not been destroyed from without. It has fallen to pieces, cleft and disintegrated by concrete historical problems which came to surface one after the other and…refused to be palmed down to fit the design on which Jesus of the theology has been constructed...” [1]

Silence of the Pagans

The history of ancient Rome has been recorded in great detail. There is a vast body of historical and philosophical literature written in or referring to the time-frame when Jesus is supposed to have walked the earth. But that literature is oblivious of the mighty figure called Jesus Christ. Seneca (2 BC-66 AD), Pliny the Elder (23-79 AD), Martial (40-102 AD), Plutarch (45-125 AD), Juvenal (55-140 AD), Apuleius (d. 170 AD), Pausanius (d. 185 AD) and Dio Casius (155-240 AD) do not mention any Jesus or Christ. Epictetus (50-100 AD) refers to Galileans starting with Judas the Galilean who led the Jewish revolt against Rome in the first decade of the First Century, but not to Jesus of Nazareth who is supposed to have come from Galilee shortly afterwards. There is no reference to any Jesus in any pagan work of the time.

“The name of Seneca, of the elder and the younger Pliny, of Tacitus, of Plutarch, of Galen, of the slave Epictetus, and the emperor Marcus Antonius, adorn the age in which they flourished, and exalt the dignity of human nature…Yet all these sages (it is no less an object of surprise than of concern) overlooked or rejected the perfection of the Christian system...” says Edward Gibbon in his classic Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire [2]. Read in between the lines to grasp what he wants to convey to a largely Christian readership without causing offence. He adds, equally meaningfully, “those among them who condescend to mention the Christians consider them only as obstinate and perverse enthusiasts who exacted an implicit submission to their mysterious doctrines without being able to produce a single argument that could engage the attention of men of sense and learning.”

There are a few words or stray passages referring to “Chrestus” or his worshippers in Pliny the Younger (60-114 AD), Tacitus (55-120 AD), Suetonius (70-120 AD) and Sulpicius Severus (d. 400 AD). The word “Chrestus” (“good” or “agreeable”) was used as an appellation for characters belonging to several sects. It did not mean anything like ‘Christ’ or ‘Christos’. That alone can explain the attempt by a Christian scribe to scratch the “e” in Chrestus and replace it by an “i” in a manuscript of Tacitus. [3]

Critical scrutiny has shown that all these references either do not relate to Jesus of Nazareth, or are influenced by Christian tradition, or are clever Christian fabrications. Ian Wilson concludes that “in all this there is scarcely a crumb of information to compel a belief in Jesus’ existence”. [4] Paul Johnson comments that fabrications “occur throughout the history of Christianity up to Renaissance and even beyond”. [5]

Sita Ram Goel has pointed out that word “Christian” does not appear in the Christian literature itself before 140 AD. On the other hand, anti-Christian polemics which appears for the first time around 160 AD, starts by questioning the existence of a character called Jesus Christ. [6]

Non-evidence of Jewish historians

As per Christian tradition, Jesus was a Jew who lived in Palestine during the first 30 or 33 years of the era which is supposed to have begun from the year of his birth. One would expect him to get a pride of place in the writings of Jewish historians who lived and wrote during the same period or a little later. It is, therefore, strange that they are silent on Jesus or the religion he is said to have founded. Philo (20 BC-54 AD), who wrote a history of the Jews, knows no Jesus Christ and no Christians. Nor does another historian of the same period, Justus of Tiberius.

The most interesting case is that of Flavius Josephus who lived from AD 36 or 37 to 99 or 100. He authored two monumental works – The Jewish War in 77 AD and The Antiquities of the Jews in 92 AD – which are regarded as a major source for the history of Palestine in the first century. Unfortunately but unsurprisingly, his works have been doctored by Christian scribes to impart a semblance of historicity to Jesus. Christian apologists point to two passages, one long and the other very short, which mention Jesus as a wise man and also as Christ. But scholars have proved quite convincingly that both of them are either clumsy Christian interpolations or have been tampered with by Christian scribes.

Here they are as they occur in the modern editions of Antiquities of Jews.

(1)   Now there was about this time, Jesus, a wise man, if it be lawful to call him a man, for he was doer of miraculous works…He was Christ; and when Pilate, at the suggestion of many of the principal men amongst us, (i.e. Jews) condemned him to cross (April 3, 33 AD), those that loved him at first did not forsake him, for he appeared to them alive again the third day (April 5, 33 AD)… (VII, III.3)

The dates in the passage are those which are held by the modern Church, they are not supplied by Josephus. The whole passage is a later interpolation. According to Prof CK Barret, “The authenticity of Josephus’s reference to Jesus as it stands now is very questionable. The passage is found in all the manuscripts (but none is older than eleventh century) and was known to Eusebius (fourth century) but Origen (first half of the third century) does not seem to have read it, at least in its present form, since he plainly tells us that Josephus did not believe Jesus to be the Christ.” [7]

(2) …so he (Ananus, the High Priest) assembled the Sanhedrin (assembly) of the judges, and brought before them the brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, whose name was James, and some others,…and when he had formed an accusation against them as breakers of law, he delivered them to be stoned…(XX IX.1)

The authenticity and credibility of this passage is also dubious because its account of the character of James (as a law breaker) and his death (by stoning) is contradicted by other early accounts.

The vast rabbinical literature of the Jews, composed during the first two and a quarter centuries of the Christian era, contains only five authentic references to Jesus. But they “do not conclusively establish his historicity, as none of them is sufficiently early”. Moreover, “they are so vague in their chronology that they differ by as much as 200 years in the dates they assign to him”. None of the five Jesuses fits the Christian scheme of Jesus Christ’s birth or life or death. The Talmud betrays no knowledge of Jesus independent of the Christian tradition, and it is conceded by most Christian scholars that it “is useless as a source of information about Jesus”. [8]

The ‘Evidence’ of Gospels

The quotation marks in the sub-title are used advisedly. In traditions influenced by Christianity, the phrase ‘gospel truth’ signifies something absolutely certain, beyond the pale of doubt. However, the evidence of Jesus’ historicity as provided by gospels is so full of contradictions and inconsistencies as to provide good reason to doubt everything about him, including his existence. These have been noticed not just by sceptics and agnostics, but also by ardent believers. As far back as the fourth century, St. Augustine had said that “only on the authority of the Church could he believe the gospels.” [9]

Ian Wilson, a practising Catholic, says: “it does not need anyone with a Ph.D. in theology to recognize that the Christian gospels can scarcely be the infallible works fundamentalists would have us believe”. [10]

Will Durant says: “In summary, it is clear that there are many contradictions between one gospel and another, many dubious statements of history, many suspicious resemblances to the legends told of pagan gods, many incidents apparently designed to prove the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies, many passages possibly aiming to establish a historical basis for some later doctrine or ritual of the Church.” [11]

Purely by way of illustration, let us see what gospels say on most elementary details about Jesus.

(a) Genealogy of Jesus: Two of the four Gospels - Matthew and Luke - give the genealogy of Jesus. Matthew lists the supposed ancestors from Abraham onwards (1.1-16). Luke traces Jesus’ supposed ancestors all the way to Adam and thence to God. Abraham, of course, figures in his list, too. When we compare the two lists, we find that in Matthew there are 39 generations between Abraham and Jesus. In Luke there are 55 generations between Abraham and Jesus. Matthew lists 27 generations between David and Jesus, Luke lists 42. Of the 26 names that occur between David and Jesus in Matthew, only four occur in Luke – and three others with similar spellings. And even among these few names, the order differs. And yet both the lists, as they occur in the Gospels, emanate from God and must be true.

(b) Year of Birth: Then again, in which year was Jesus born? “Jesus was born… during the time when Herod was king,” says Matthew (2.1). Now Herod died in 3 BC. That would place birth of Jesus in 4 BC or 3 BC at the latest. “It was the fifteenth year of the rule of Emperor Tiberius; Pontius Pilate was the Governor of Judea, Herod was the ruler of Galilee and his brother Philip was…” says Luke (3.1-3) These verses put the date of Jesus’ birth to 2 or 1 BC. The same Gospel also tells us that “at that time Emperor Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Roman Empire. When this first census took place, Quirinius was the Governor was Syria…” (Luke 2.1-3).  Now, a census did take place when Quirinius was Governor of Syria. But that happened in 6 or 7 AD. But all these dates – 4 or 3 BC, 2 or 1 BC or 6 or 7 AD – must be taken as having God as their authors since they occur in the Gospels.

Look at the basic contradiction in the twin claims about Jesus being the descendant of David, and also being born of a virgin mother. If Jesus was born of a virgin, if Joseph had nothing to do with his being conceived then how can his descent be traced through Joseph to David?

Such contradictions and discrepancies mark every stage, every event in the life of Jesus: the place of his birth, the date of his birth, his ministry, his miracles, his trial, his crucifixion and resurrection. It is neither possible nor necessary to list all of them here.

Biblical scholars have compiled them with great diligence. The findings and conclusions of their research are available to anyone with relatively small effort. Among others, for example, Arun Shourie has documented them in great detail in his Harvesting Our Souls: missionaries, their design, their claims (ASA Publications, New Delhi, 2000). Small wonder that no responsible theologian or historian is now prepared to construct the life-story of Jesus from material provided by the gospels.

“But that is the whole point. You are nit-picking, going on and on about the discrepancies among the accounts of an event in different gospels. The details of gospels are not what is important. What matters is the figure of faith that they weave,” the missionaries would say.

Although this is a somersault from tall claims about a solid figure of history as opposed to mythological mumbo-jumbo, we would let it pass. There is no doubt that millions of Christians through the ages have derived solace and guidance from the gospels.

The Hindu response to this argument would be: if faith is what is important, what is the reason to prefer Jesus over, say, Ram or Krishna? As figures of faith they too have sustained millions upon millions of people for far longer than Jesus. Moreover, they have done so without the help of the highly aggressive, well-oiled and well-heeled machinery of the church.

A little elaboration is in order. Herod referred to in Mathew is Herod the Great who died in 3 or 4 BC. When Luke says “It was the fifteenth year of the rule of Emperor Tiberius; Pontius Pilate was the Governor of Judea, Herod was the ruler of Galilee and his brother Philip was…” (3.1-3) he refers to Herod Antipas, son of Herod the Great, who succeeded his father as ruler of Galilee. Luke refers here not to the birth of Jesus but his baptism at the age of 30. John's Gospel informs us that Jesus was not fifty years old when he died. That would put his birth around 16 or 15 BC. When was Jesus born if at all?

Reproducing what Vishnu Varadan wrote in his book:
..."1. IMMACULATE BIRTH OF JESUS
Christianity claims that Jesus was born to a virgin called
Mary who had conceived him to the Holy Ghost. This was not proved by the Bible. The galore of unreconciliable contradictions in the gospels reveal that the immaculate birth of Jesus is a big lie. A few Gospel contradictions are presented in Annexure A on page 40 Apart from that, the following facts will also reveal that Christianity's claim is nothing but a concocted story.

• The Hebrew word "Almah" means a young woman according to Isaiah (7:14), but it was deliberately translated as "Virgin" by Mathew (1:22) to project Mary as the virgin mother of Jesus.
• There is no evidence to prove that Mary was
conceived by the Holy Ghost.
• Since Mary was already married to Joseph, if at all Jesus was born to her, he was born to a couple according to the flesh and blood. The devout Christians cannot accept it due to the fear that Jesus also cannot escape from the original sin if he were born like us.
• When Philip III and Philip IV asked the Popes to define the immaculate conception of Jesus, the Popes

Paul V, George V and Alexander VII, replied that the doctrine was not definable as it is not in the scripture. (Problems in Paradise P-93)

• Franciscans and Dominicans attacked each other bitterly over the Immaculate Conception and St.Thomas Aquinas denied the doctrine. (ibid p-93) Moreover if Jesus were to be the son of Virgin, then the prophesy7 of Old Testament that he will come as a decedent of David (Acts 13:22) becomes false.

We have to look at the issue from another point of view which is the date of birth of Jesus. According to Luke, the Angel announced Jesus• Christ's birth to the shepherds of Bethlehem when hey were feeding their flocks at night in open fields. (Luke 2:68) Since the climate of Judea from December to February used to be just too cold to take care of flocks in the open fields (Song of Solomon 2:11: Zl Era10:9,13), the announcement of the birth of Jesus on 25th December by the Angel was not true. Moreover only in the year 354 C.E., Bishop Liberous of Rome ordered the people to celebrate the birth day of Jesus on December 25th.

From 354 C.E., some western churches including those of Rome commemorated the birth of Jesus on December 25th which was already the central festival of Mithraism being the birth day of one of the Pagan Gods-Mitra (Sun God) which was attracting lakhs of people. Therefore pagans' festival on Mitra's birth day was hijacked and appropriated by the Christian fraternity as the birth day of Jesus. (Idhi Christavam This is Christianity P 10& 11) However it may be noted that the Eastern orthodox church celebrates January 7th as Christmas.
Above all, the western Biblical and Christological researchers have proved that the birth of Jesus itself is a big lie. Irrefutable facts with cogent and clinching evidences discussed and recorded by the western scholars of very high reputation proved existence of Jesus as next to nothing. These important findings have been well compiled and discussed by Late Sitaram Goel in the first chapter of his masterly work "Jesus Christ: An Artifice for Aggression." Readers are requested to read it to know the facts by themselves. For the immediate attention of the readers, a few of the said significant findings regarding the myth of historical Jesus are mentioned in Annexure B on page 42.
The last nail in the coffin of controversial birth and existence of Jesus has been hammered by the Dead Sea scrolls. In the year 1947, one of the most significant archeological finds of the 20th century took place at a place not far from Jericho in the Qumran region of Palestine on the western shore of Dead sea (now in Israel). Several jars containing bundles of parchment8 with writings upon them were found. They were mainly Hebrew and Aramaic manuscripts.

s Parchment: the skin of a sheep, goat, or other animal prepared for writing.

7

The Dead sea scrolls tell us that everything claimed for Christianity was borrowed from an extremist Jewish sect (Qumranians) and repackaged and propagated as the teachings of Jesus Christ as though the only son of God. The idea of the Davidic Messiah as the son of God was already there in the Dead Sea Scrolls! The Gospels simply borrowed it and attributed it to their Jesus Christ. Qumranians the members of extremist Jewish sect also expected that their coming messiah would perform miracles like healing the sick and resurrecting the dead. (Christianity's Collapsing Empire and Its Designs in India P-17) Therefore Jesus of Gospels was a synthetic9 personality assembled in this fashion from Qumran texts.

CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS
Jesus was said to have been crucified on cross by the Jews, but the traditional capital punishment which was prevalent in the Jewish community was stoning a person and then hanging him with a rope to the branch of a
•. tree. Moreover at that time Cross was not the symbol of
Christians. It was a Pagan religious symbol found as a mystic cross in the Hieroglyphics a sacred character used in picture writing (Pictorial language) of Egyptian civilization. Christians copied the said cross and started using it for Jesus several centuries after his death. Just look at the fallacy10 behind Christian symbol, the Cross.

• There was a Venus temple in Jerusalem where the
Holy Cross Church is situated. Helena the mother of
King . Constantine had a dream in which she saw Jesus being crucified on cross at that place. Constantine did not think for a while, how Jesus could have been crucified at a place where a Pagan temple was existing even prior to the birth of Jesus. He demolished Venus temple and constructed the Holy Cross Church under the pretext of his mother's ream. (Idhi Christavam P 28
& 29) Then it was considered as the religious symbol .of Christians. Only in 692 A.D. the council of Constantinople declared that Cross is real. (Not symbolic) Jesus Christ:• An Artifice for Aggression P-18) Thus cross became the important religious symbol of Christians many centuries after the death of Jesus. Some of the contradictions between gospels about the crucifixions are presented in annexure A. It is also pertinent to note that according to Quran Jesus did not die on the cross. (4:157)

RESURRECTION OF JESUS:

Christians claim that Jesus who died on the Cross had resurrected11 after three days and then after few more days finally ascended to heaven, but it has no historical support. Research scholars proved that Paul was the first person who had conceived the theory of resurrection. His lengthy letters (Epistles) addressed to the apostles12 and •others have narrated the story of resurrection. The first Corinthian13 Letter said to have

11 Resurrection: A rising from the dead . Esp. that of Christ
12 Apostle: One sent to preach the gospeL Esp. one of Christ's first twelve followers.
13 Corinthian: Over brilliant in literacy style.

been written by Paul in 49 C.E. Says, “If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain" (I Corinthians 15:12-15) This clinching evidence reveals that Paul was the first person who gave life to the story of resurrection and there were not many in those days who pelieved it. Now Biblical scholars have proved that the epistles were fabricated and forged ones. (The, Falsified Paul: Early Christianity In The Twilight 2003)

Paul sent a number of frenzied letters to Jewish community outside Jerusalem. These letters were considered very important and incorporated in the New Testament by the Church. It is in these letters that we find the first formulation of belief which became a full fledged but completely closed Christian theology in due course of time. Christian doctrine was formalized at the 4th century council of Nicaea. Alas! Jesus was raised from mortal prophet to immortal God by a. vote of the collected Bishops. 2 Bishops from Libya voted against deification (exalting14 Jesus to the rank o£ a God). They were soon murdered by their colleagues. (Expressions of Christianity P 50) Thus, Christianity founded by St.Paul became politicalised even in the initial stage of its
evolution in the 4th century C.E.

Some • Christians give different' meaning to the
resurrection of Jesus.1 According to them, resurrection did not mean that Jesus raised with his body, but it means he resurrected (raised) in the form of Atma. If this is accepted, Christianity of 2000 years built on the dogma

14 Exaltation: Elevation in rank or dignity.
of original sin will crumble like a mansion built with a pack of cards.

There are inexplicable glaring contradictions on thetopic of resurrection of Jesus between Gospel writers and the accounts of so called eye witnesses, quoted in support of the doctrine. Readers are requested to refer Annexure 'C' on page 45 to know some of the contradictions, which have wiped out the false theory of resurrection and ascendance of Jesus to heaven.
Thus immaculate birth, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus reveal more problems.

BIBLE

Bible the so called authorized James version is a book of
66 books (39 books of the Old Testament and 27 books of the New Testament) composed over a period of 1500 years. Swami Devananda Saraswati a Hindu monk of Canadian birth said, "The New Testament books as we know them today are composite works edited and rewritten a number of times after the Fourth Century Council of Nicaea.... Some years after the Council, Emperor Constantine sanctioned and financed a new edition of the Bible. As there were no original documents to work from (they had been destroyed by Emperor Dioclet-Ian), the Bishops were free to edit, revise, and rewrite the Bible according to their own tenets." (Expressions of Christianity with a focus on India P 50) Covering this fact under a carpet of lies, the Christian fraternity claims the New Testament as the teachings/ messages of Jesus. Since the very existence of Jesus has been disproved, it is a waste of time to discuss any distinction between the Old and New Testament.

However the following commandments in the New Testament attributed to Jesus Christ of gospels reveal that they cannot be the word of God.

• "Think not I am come to send peace on earth: I come not to send peace, but a Sword." (Mathew 10:34)
• "He that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one." (Luke 22:36)
• "I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household." (Matt.10:35-36) .
Such messages of the Bible had motivated and moved the Christian fraternity to indulge in most infamous crusades15 and inquisitions16. To say a few, crores of native (Red) Indians were exterminated in the North and South Americas during the 15th and 16th centuries and 6 million Jews were burnt in gas chambers during the Second World War. The Church was holding on to the belief that the earth is flat. When the scientists like Copernicus, Galileo and Bruno have discovered the fact that the earth is spherical and the Sun is at the centre of our Universe (Helio-Centric Theory), instead of gracefully accepting the fact, those scientists were persecuted by the Church and Bruno was burnt alive at a stake on 17th February 1600 C.E. This single incident serves as the tip of the iceberg to prove that the Bible is

1s Crusade: Religious war.
16 Inquisitions: A tribunal in the Roman Catholic Church for discovery, repression and punishment of Heresy, unbelief etc.

Read the book by Dr.Robert M Price, Biblical scholar and ex-pastor on this subject titled "The Christ Myth Theory". It is an eye opener for sure. Not every one will agree with this assertion but Price lays it out in a very methodical manner. Bart Ehrman also makes interesting assertions but stops short of calling Jesus a myth. Also listen to Prices' interview titled "The Case Against The Case for Christ" available on Youtube. These facts have been known for around 300 years.

I am glad to see this topic being brought up. Missionaries have always belittled other faiths so it is time they are investigated too. However if you are a bible thumping believer then it will be difficult for you to see the contradictions as viewed by non believers. Dr. Price also hosts a podcast called The Bible Geek where people ask questions on the bible and he answers them on this podcast. Those with theological questions can ask him questions on this podcast. The answers will differ from the stock replies from preachers. After all the bible is just another book authored by very creative authors to suit a particular purpose.
I hope more Indians learn about these facts so that they can counteract the gross misinformation spit out by missionaries. That Christianity has plenty of holes in it's thelogy.

It is worth noting that the other founding figures of the Old Testament, from Adam to Moses are all legendary figures whose historical reality is doubtful at best. Moses may have been a fictional figure based on Pharaoh Akhenaten, according to some Jewish historians and he was imparted with various mythological attributes and features (the horns of Amon on his head, miraculous powers....He was said to have been found in a cradle floating in the river, like the king Sargon of Akkad many centuries earlier or Drona in the Mahabharata). All in all, the Bible is a collection of popular stories and symbolic tales.

What an eye-opener! But the fact is majority of hindus regard Jesus to be a true historical figure, a true messiah etc., due to false propaganda or education system or whatever you may call it.

Therefore, this kind of information need to reach a vast majority to enlighten them about falsities in Christianity.

In this regard I would suggest you strongly to publish in www.speakingtree.com, which a lot of people follow an Times of India brings out a Monday edition of speaking tree. A lot of people will come to know of this if published in www.speakingtree.com.

I think there is not an iota of doubt that Jesus never existed. In spite of this the CHURCH has been propagating the lies of the Jesus and Christianity. Moreover I think even the educated christians know this fact but can't take on the CHURCH. Christians like Steve Jobs, Richard Gere, Julia Roberts have shown keen interest in Hinduism / Bhudism and there are thousands which throng the Indian Religious cities like Haridwar, Banaras, Pushkar etc. to experience true spiritualism.

There is a historian by the name of Sh. P.N. Oak who I think is the most well researched historian to my knowledge who have proved that Jesus was not a historical person. He has also written on the similar lies surrounded around the origins of religion of Islam. Lot of his theories/findings have been re-validated by many other researchers. One can read his books online on the link given below:

http://archive.org/stream/EnglishBooksOfP.n.Oak/SomeBlundersOfIndianHistoricalResearch_djvu.txt.

There are more of such researchers/ historians/archeologists like Stephan Knapps, Michael Cremo, Bibhu Dev Misra, Graham Hancock etc who have given a well researched study showing the truths of Hindu beliefs and teachings of VEDAS & PURANS, their antiquity and prevalence all across the globe.
