Guys,

Wanted to go down memory lane. The older guys on sajha must have good memories of when Nepal Television first came to Nepal. I remember that only one of my relatives had a TV at first. And it was such a big deal. At first there was only news and a few hours of television programming.

I was wondering what are the shows you remember?

My memories are of Rama Singh and Durgha nath Sharma telling the news. I still remember the tune when the news started.

The cartoon Barba-papa - this chewing gum looking character with his family...Barba-mama, barba-joe, barba-this and barba-that. Whole family could change shape on command. I think this was one of the first cartoons on NTV. Us kids were highly entertained. Clickety-click Barba click!

On Saturday afternoons, my friends and I would sit down to watch the afternoon show.

Remember Variety Variety -- it was like 'America's got talent.' It was like a circus with people with all kinds of talents.

And I remember foreign shows like--The Professionals (that was my favorite. My cousin and I used to run around with fake guns and pretend that we were the professionals.) Dempsey and Makepiece. The A team. Faulty towers.
Knight Rider...and that show with the super-motorcycle. I forget that name.

And then there were Nepali shows like...damn I don't remember but I remember the character played by Ramesh Budhathoki -- Deepak Thapa. In that character Ramesh Budhathoki used to do this thing with his forefinger that he would rub it under his nose. Wow, that really caught on in Kathmandu during that time. All the kids were doing that. The funny thing was that apparantly whenever any kid saw Budhathoki, they would do that to him and after a while it started to get annoying to him. LOL.

And I remember all the advertisements that used to be made in India. You could tell because they were Indian actors in the commercial but the words would be Nepali. Some of it would sound so odd. Like that Maggi commercial, "Mummy bhok lage chha." (as opposed to 'Mummy, bhok lagyo')

Being a football fan I used to watch the replay matches under 'Football Made in Germany' and 'Road to Wembley'. As someone pointed out earlier we were not familiar with the name of the team leave alone the name of the players, so we used to say 'Rato Team', 'Hariyo Team' etc. In comparison to the matches we watched in Dasarath Rangashala I used to find these football more exciting and interesting.
The name of the series mentioned earlier was 'Chature ko dau pech' in which Khem Sharma the comedian was the main actor. A remake in Nepali from a popular French drama.

Shangrila channel ko day tv. I think it was started around 2055 BS, which started the era of day time television in Nepal. After couple of months shangrilla channel was basically repeating the same shows over and over. Later NTV started broadcasting its own daytime shows.

Apart from what everyone has mentioned:

1) That show with MaHa Jodi, Melina Manandhar, Ashok Sharma. Haribanshe is a retard and goes Ti-ri-ri-ri Pirati! Lol

I think it was called Highway

2) Ma-Ha ko Ban-Pale, and Hari Bansha ko memorable dialogue, "Kya naam distup!"

3) That one drama with Saroj Khanal where he is a drug addict or crazy (I cant remember). He is locked in the room by his sister (one of those two actresses who were sisters who used to look exactly alike. Does anyone remember their names?).

I remember Saroj Khanal had his hair all messed up, beard grown and he used to scream, "Didi malai smack chaiyo!" Saroj Khanal was awesome. Really underrated as an actor in those TV dramas.

4) Santosh Panta ko show where he plays a kid in a man's body. I remember one dialogue, "Gobinda, malai achhi aayo!" Gobinda was his caretaker who hated him first and later begins to love him.

5) Santosh Panta ko Meet Baa bhanne TV drama.

6) Harish Mathema and Sunil Uprety's songs, "aau sathi ho, hasau khelaun, you dui din ko jawani ma."

7) That song, "sani bar, sani bar, sanicha-bar" on Saturday with footage of families visiting the zoo, riding elephants.

8) Cartoon Show: The Smurfs

9) Vijay Kumar's show 8 Baje which started off by Ghanta Ghar striking 8 times. So obvious and redundant. Lolz.

10) I remember each NTV prasharan starting by the king's message with his picture on the side. Some announcer used to solemnly read the kings message. There was a new one every day.

11) I remember one ad where this guy with long hair in an oversized coat goes, "pet ta bharyo tara mann ta bharena!" Must be meat masala or something.

12) Pandra Gate. "Saya thari baja eutai taal"

13) That show with Chankhe and Nakkali where they come to Kathmandu from the village. Their son pees on the road side and they get fined 50 rs. Forgot the name of that show.

14) Maha ko Dashain bhanne TV serial. "Chappa bhaire, chappa!"

15) Bhuwan KC's Tea commercial. "Ru ru ru ru ru ru" Bhuwan KC and this girl run around trees and finally sit down for a cup of tea.

16) Manisha Koirala's advertisement for Megha Wool

17) Krishna Malla was my hero as a kid. Chakraviyuh and Tadha ko Basti. He used to kick all the baddies. I thought he was like some sort of superhero who could do anything. Kaji Baa (Ramesh Budhathoki) used to twirl his cap exactly to the beat of music. Ashok Sharma as Juthe was scary.

18) Sukmit Gurung's song Relimai, relimai , relimai.

19) Kristy KC'c commercial: Taxi Kun tire cha yesma, gorkhkali tire cha.

Me and my brother loved to watch Pakistaani TV serials, which was in different channel followed by Ramayan or Mahabharat indian Tv serial.
We rushed to change the channel but my distant uncle and bhauju could not let us change until the- end screen replaced by other advertisement as if the-end was part of the serial.
