Note: Please respect everyone's comment and discuss like civil gentlemen/women (with good paragraph breaks, full stops, etcetera). Also lets keep the personal attacks to a minimum ok? GO.

My opinion but I think these Muslim ppl behind building the mosque are taking advantage of their liberties. This isn't their land, and especially with what happened on 9/11/2001, they should at the very least acknowledge that maybe it wouldn't hurt to shift the mosque a couple of hundred miles away from Ground Zero.

Why are they so adamant about building it right next to the damn site? And also they are trying to coincide the launch of the mosque to 9/11/2010? Of all 365 days they want to deliberately choose this date.

This will obviously enrage the Americans!

First the twin towers are razed to the ground in one horrific event.
Now they want to build a mosque smack right in front of where the towers used to be (2 blocks away).
And on top of that they want the date to coincide with the day the towers were attacked.
This kinda reminds me of Ayodhaya with the mosque/temple conflict.
These guys are so bent on stamping their presence all over the world, in the most controversial of places. I wonder how they would feel if someone went over to Mecca and proposed to build a church right across the street from it.

Let us hear what you have to say. Looking forward for some interesting debates from the opposition.

Invade being politically right. What if their own fellow bombs that mosque? That has been happening.

It is ridiculous if you think a mosque can't be built few blocks from ground zero. I support obama's views on anyones right to do so. If you have money and land you should be able to do it.

Consider this, these same people who oppose this building of mosque, do they have any problem with American Ambassy in Japan. Rewind back to Hiroshima.

Oh the media…the politics of it all. How haveth we flown with thee…

First of all I want to caution everybody who stumps the ground with his/her argument without doing adequate research- just by the whim of emotions.

Let me present my argument and then facts.

First of all, let’s assume they were going to build a mosque in the ground zero location. The first amendment of US constitution protects  religious freedom, hence constitutionally it is illegal to stop a project for religious reason. Second, are we blaming the whole muslim community for the 911 attack? Didn’t we agree that it is some muslim fanatics who brought upon the distruction? Are those fanatics building the mosque? NO. So, if you want to stop the project, you might as well declare a jihad against the muslim religion.

What about the sentiments of 911 victim? My sympathy is with them. But if we rise above the emotional level, even they will understand why we cannot blame the whole religion and community for a mistake of few. I will not dissect the religion and argue upon its validity, however I will say this that I won’t blame the whole religion for a deed by the minority, mind you-this religion has over 1.6 billion followers.

Now, let’s get to the facts.

1.       Mosque is just a small part of the project. This 13- story hall (park 51) will have recreation facilities (swimming pool etc), 500-seat general auditorium, restaurant & culinary school and a September 11 memorial. The new building wouldn’t even have the minarets (“distinctive architectural feature of a mosque”), so from outside it would look like any other big building, not mosque.

2.       The location of the project is NOT at the ground zero location. It is two big blocks north of the location and if you actually go there, you won’t feel you are close to the WTC site.

3.       The location is called “hallowed ground” and whatever not by fox news and other conservative media. But, had they actually been there, they would have seen NY Dolls Gentlemen Club and Uncle Mike’s bar plus Dakota Roadhouse pub. Don’t sound like a hallowed ground to me.

My kudos to Mayor Bloomberg and President Obama for staying firm on their stand. Shame on you Harry Reid and all of the conservative leaders who are politicizing religion for an easy win in November.

Building a mosque and an embassy are two whole different things. In fact, that symbolize the victory for them which is not tolerable for Americans as general. I really didn't get their motive on this matter.

A week ago, I was against it but after watching all these right wingers and neocons making some crazy argunment and comparing the mosque to Nazi, I changed my mind and now I'm for it.  I have been living in USA for last 14 years and no time before have I noticed this much of racisim and haterism from these people.  Gone were the day’s when America used to say "Give me your tired, your poor/Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free".  These days if you are not white, you are either illegal immigrant or a Terrorist.

those who oppose the mosque by the side of ground zero, would they oppose a church near Oklahoma memorial, coz the guy who blew up the building was a christian? thats not american spirit, if the local law doesnot prohibit them from doing that, then why should it be heated subject for national debate . in my understanding, if america considers and recognizes islam as a religion , then they should have equal rights as christians, jews or hindus or others who live here.

The very first problem about the whole debacle is with the name itself.
The media has chosen such a sensational name so as to create maximum
furor. Any unpopular association with the holy name of 'ground zero' was
going to heckle people all around. Now, it has become sacrilegious and
unpatriotic to support the construction of 'ground zero mosque.'

Unfortunately, it has come to a point where the debate has come down to
more of an emotional than constitutional issue. The place has already
been denied  'landmark status.'  Understandably it's going to hurt the
sentiments of relatives of 9/11 victims. However, they should be proud
of the sacrifices of those men and women who stood for the freedom and
liberty of all the people, whose religion and all other parameters were
immaterial to them. Freedom, however clichéd it is, should not take
double standards.

It should be nobody's business as long as the cultural center's
operatives follow the rules and regulations. And yes, for those who do
not know, it is a cultural center. While this country drum-beats for
moderate Muslims, it is ironical that they are opposing a cultural
center, which is trying to bridge the distrust we see, and most
importantly allay the irrational fear we harbor.

What's the big deal?

To the naysayers:
If it is not okay to build a mosque 2 blocks from the attacks site, how many blocks away would it be reasonable to build the new mosque? To pick some random numbers 21, 47 or 93 blocks away? To negotiate that part, we need to recruit some veteran car salesmen for either side.

The official record says the terrorists brought down the twin towers, not the entire World Muslim Community. Besides, conspiracy theorists are not overlooking the mounting evidences to the possibility of an "inside job".

Islam and terrorism are not the same thing. The root cause of the majority of the international terrorist activities is the Israel-Palestine conflict. Somebody needs to address that part first.

It's very easy to come to Sajha and pour ur wise-ass comments about America and Americans, often forgetting where you come from. This is none of ur god damn problem. Do u think India will allow the same mosque on the temple bombed by "so called few extremist" Muslim in India? This is their country, let them do what they want, right or wrong. It's not only Americans, these days Europeans are taking drastic steps to protect their own religion and people,  I mean who would not.
What next, should the US help Pakistan with the flood or not? One wise guys writes- Tell us where Osama is hiding and we'll drop you some food.

Comment made by Jonny makes a lot of sense. Now, you can laugh as much as you want because you perhaps are not muslims. Please don't whine later when they come after you for whatever you believe in other than their beliefs.

There was an interview of a guy in NPR today who said they faced the similar opposition when they built a mosque in some other places. If I remember correctly, there were opposition regarding buddhist temples in Minnesota, and recently someone wrote in a comment section regarding hindu temples and the celebration of cultures in temples: "If you want to celebrate your culture, go back to where you come from". Please do not change the side when that time, god forbid, comes.

Rid, You think you are the only one who saw that clip? I bet everyone who posted here have seen or heard of this conspiracy theory. It has been 10 years since the event, we aren't living under a rock like you. Ke ke na dekha jasto.

Arahat, well said.

Rewire, so because we live in a foreign country we don't have any right to say anything? Last time I checked free speech was still protected here. In your own words, it's very easy to come to Sajha and and pour ur wise-assed comments about Nepalese.

It is not just about the Mosque.  Check the link below and find out how crazy some of these people are.  This Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert thinks there is a trend of people from other countries to come to US to have babies here and get US citizenship so that those babies can return back after 20-30 years to attack America.  This is just one example of how extreme this country has become.

Under the current political climate, logic and reasoning has gone out the window.

Extremism(both Left and Right) is main stream now, toatally disregarding the laws of the land.

"Amendment 1 - Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression. Ratified 12/15/1791."

I guess this does not hold water anymore, they also want to get rid of citizenship to illigal aliens children. The people who are nuts are in front page news.

all the logical reasonings aside, there is certain sensitivity associated with certain places, i believe people have the right to express their freedom but in such a way that it doesn't interfere with other's sentiments

those who are saying a big YES to this project, just answer me one simple question, should someone be allowed to open a pork barbeque and grill right below this Islamic Center?

Man ko kuro
Good logic...trust me people will not answer instead reiterate what they see on TV.
Let's go back to Nepal...what about cow momo shop, how far that should be from your holy Pashupatinath, would that be okay? Do you think that would not make the headline, if you can get away without being killed in the first place.
Kiddo,
Don't get too excited with your new found phrase "freedom of speech". It's not like the issue is with a Hindu temple or a Buddhist monastery. Don't poke you nose on other people's affair. First make you country tolerant and then point ur finger. We're even worse then them, believe me.
The Muslim started the project itself was political to begin with, and now it is all war.

WHO ARE YOU TO TELL ME WHAT TO DO AND NOT TO DO AND WHO ARE YOU TO DECIDE WHOOSE AFFAIR IT IS?
I live in this country; I would like to participate in local community activities where ever I am; You may be SELFISH to feel about your OWN home and not care about the place you currently live; but I DO CARE.

Man ko kuro, Granted you didn’t research fully on this topic, did you atleast go through few of the posts on this thread? Read the ones by dwi, dHwase and bhakunde bhut?

The mosque is not erected at Ground Zero!!  See the location for itself. And YES, there are plenty of pubs and restaurants around this mosque who serve pork and bacon. It has been “sensitized” and politicized by conservative media; next thing they will say you cannot build a mosque in a COUNTRY where 911 happened. Would you tolerate that?

Rewire, read my response above, I just answered Man ko kuro; you specifically said people will not answer his question! You tell me I shouldn’t poke my nose on other people’s business, then why are you poking nose on other’s postings here? Nobody invited you to this forum, you poked your nose on other’s affair and posted. So it is okay if you do it but wrong if I do it? Also read what Arahat wrote.

And your logic of we being worse doesn’t excuse anybody else from being bad.

Arahat, दे दनक बजियालाई

Mun ko kuro to your question the answer is Yes. This is not Dubai, Pakisthan, or Saudi Arabia. Whether the mosque likes it or not, just like they have the right to build the mosque, the pork bbq owner also has the right to open a shop right at the bottom. It would a big no no Dubai, Pakisthan, or Saudi Arabia but this not is it ?
