Questions asked during intrivew were:

C: what do u do?
Mom: retired from gov bank and dad working in private company as director
C: how many kids and what they do?
Mom: 2 kids, Son in  Nepal (studying bachelor) and daughter in USA, good standing student
C: How long has your daughter been in USA?
Mom: 5 years
C: Have you traveled to another country?
Mom: No

You should give a another shot. Nothing is wrong with trying again. I heard people do get visa in the second attempt.

I have the same situation here. I graduated in December. My parents applied twice but got rejected both of the time. They did not give any reason. As you mentioned above, they said same word to my parents too. I stopped my ceremony and doing it in May. I want them to try once again. Waiting for the good result.

I wish you all the best for your parents.

Good Luck.

As far as I know, there are two valid reasons for denying visa to parents wanting to come for graduation. 1) if the counselor thinks that the parents don't have strong ties to the home country and there is a chance that they might try to stay in the US 2) if the counselor feels that the student or parents aren't financially capable of sponsoring the trip. Since your brother is in Nepal, I don't see why the counselor would think that your parents would try to stay in the US. So, may be it's the financial thing. I am just speculating, though. You should definitely ask them to try again and emphasize that your brother is in Nepal. Since your mom is already retired and dad has his own company may be the counselor felt that it will be easy for them to just stay in the US and not return. Also, you could ask someone in your international student office to write a customized letter for you; I don't know if that is going to help but I can't see how it would hurt. Please post your experience after the 2nd try. Good luck. !!

Edit: I completely agree with OC101's comments below. I think that is the reason they were denied visa. It's funny how what you thought were your strengths are actually your weaknesses as far as getting your parents the visa is concerned.

i know ur mistake, did your parents told the counselor that ur a very good student and u already have a job lined up?? if thats the case then, remember ur given visa just to study here and not to compete in job market!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I  think the counselor assume that not only, ur going to stay here but now have the ability to make ur parent stay!!! which is a complete no no to them

She (counselor) didn't even look at the file. The job documents are end of the file. As per my parents they watch couples of parents got rejected before them. I think it all depend upon their "MOOOOOOD". I am think to ask them apply separately. Will it work?????

"I wanna share my experience. My parents applied in Nov 2009 for my Dec Graduation but denied the visa. Counselor (She) even didn't look at the documents. She asked some family questions such as how many kids you have? What are they doing?--- Finally She said "Tapai aayogya hunuhuncha." Dad applied second time and again denied the visa. Reason was nothing. Among three, two of my siblings are in US. so,  I think counselor may thought, they won't return back. They showed enough bank balance as they are involving in business but still denied the visa" I guess it depends on luck and counselor mood."

But,
your family situation is different than mine so, your parents should apply again. They still have chance to get visa. I agree with OC101 comment too.

Here is my experience. You guys got the decision right away but we are stuck without any definite decision. My parents applied for visa in October 09 for my graduation. During the interview, the counselor (or whoever interviewed) said everything was fine. They kept my parent's passport and asked them to collect the visa in the afternoon. In the afternoon they went to collect the visa, but parents were told that they needed to investigate something and returned their passport and asked to wait for their call. We didn't hear anything until December and I emailed the counselor. In the reply they said its a "mandatory administrative processing" and there is no other way than waiting. We are still waiting to hear from them. Neither my parents can reapply nor they can withdraw. My dad went to the embassy several times but he was asked to wait for their call every time.

Which phone cards did you use to call your parents?
I can recommend some good ones; they are like only 15 cents a minute.

This is a common interview-rejection scenario. Definitely have your parents apply again. I know of a person, who reapplied 4 times for tourist visa, yes 4 times, the same counselor interviewed him all 4 times. The first 3 times, all they would say is that he did not qualify even though he is a leading businessman and asked him not to reapply unless there is a compelling new reason besides what he had presented before. The fourth time he asked the counselor, I just want a 2 weeks visa for visiting my relatives, that's all, Here's my business card, I don't intend to stay in the US. If you reject me again, I will reapply again. I wont give up! The counselor smiled, did not seem to have an option this time-hence, approved.  He was only granted a 2 weeks single-entry visa. The port of entry officer however granted him 6 months. He came to the US, spent only 2 weeks and duly returned back. A few months later he applied for a tourist visa again and this time they granted a 5 yrs multiple entry visa.

What I want to mention here is that if the applicant is determined, he/she should try again, and again. An aggressive yet determined approach definetely helps.

In your case, like mentioned above, they have have been alarmed by the job market issue but that is not the only thing they focused on. Your dad's company should mention in its cover letter the purpose of travel, leave approval, remuneration, position and his need to stay in Nepal to demonstrate strong economic-financial ties. Your mom's retirement should not have any impact. Additionally, send them an itinerary of stay in the US showing places they will travel as tourists besides the graduation. Show mom's pension documents to show financial ability.

Good Luck.

Write/Email to counselor, or Embassy with all details. They will reply back with reason of denial.
Next time, just do something to overcome that reason of denial. Generally, it is financial or intent to stay in US.

Plzhelp,

I was still in school at that time. I was about to graduate. I graduated in December and I am in OPT now (basically F1 visa). I emailed the counselor too but they said its "mandatory administrative processing" and they also said that they can't discuss the case with me as I am not the principal applicant. My dad has been to the embassy 2/3 times after that to ask them about the status, but he was told to wait for their phone call every time. We still haven't heard from them. Their application was not rejected so, I don't think reapplication will make a difference. My parents are 60+ age.
