I called my professor “Madam” in class today and all the students were looking at me as if I just landed from mars.

I call them "Prof."

In the Unignited State of America, Madam is usually an offensive word. Old women are referred to as Madam.

So, call them Prof, Mr/Miss XYZ or call them by their firstname.

i don't think, there is any problem in calling Madam.
i used to call them madam/sir for seven yrs.
some one does not like madam/sir because it is british term.
you can call them by last name.

Some even prefer to call them by their first name . (I also felt very hard for my tongue getting use to these things.)

He He,
As my professor pays for me ( I am a graduate student), he wants me to call Boss. So do I and all the members of my lab.

Dr. (last name) unless they request otherwise.

It felt pretty awkward in the beginning when I had to address some of them by their first names :)

Thanks all,

I generally used to avoide calling them, but नानी देखि लगेको बानी भने जस्तो प्वाक्क निस्की हाल्यो and was a kind of odd.

In emails I address them as " Professor [so and so]"
when talking I call them by their first name, cuz most professors are cool and like being on first name basis with their students.
as for "madam" hahaha...dont use that word man, use "ma'am" instead, works much better. like "yes ma'am" it will still turn a few heads, but not as much if u said 'yes madan'. Never use " yes my mistress". ull get sued:)..
I dont think its a big deal to address (when emailing) them with "prof." .
I personally never use "doc" to address them. "Dr." works much better for me.

It depends , it is better to approach them or know about it from someone else in advance . Because these are small things that counts a lot!
With me, these days I call them by their pet name( lucky me!) Hehahaha! and we discuss about different desginers after the class, except for few Khadoos ones with whom I hardly communicate.
