Bomjan continues meditation challenging medical history

A 15-year old boy, who seems challenging medical history, is silently meditating beneath a tree, without eating or drinking anything for more than six months.

Ram Bomjon, a normal boy of Bara district is silently meditating beneath a pipal tree in the same posture as the Buddha is depicted around 543 BC.

The Buddha achieved enlightenment when he meditated beneath a sacred pipal tree for 49 days.

Thousands of people are pouring into the dense jungle of southern Nepal to worship Bomjan as a new Buddha. The thick forest has been converted into a market following the popularity of the new Buddha boy.

According to Witnesses, they have seen light emanating from the teenager's forehead.

"He's definitely got thinner. Early in the morning he looks sunken, like there's no blood in him, but as the sun rises he seems to get brighter and brighter," reports quoted Tek Bahadur Lama, a member of the committee responsible for dealing with the growing number of visitors as saying.

Talking to Nepalnews Chief District Officer of Bara District Shanta Raj Subedi informed that the flow of people started to decrease after the local committee decided not to allow people to see him.

He informed that the local administration is also investigating about the money collected from donations offered by the people and also examining the claim that he is not eating and drinking anything since last six months.

?The District Administration had corresponded Lumbini Development Trust and Royal Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (RONAST) for investigation about his meditation,? he added.

He said that though security unit had not been established in the area the administration is working closely with the local community for the security of Bomjan.

Vice-Chancellor of RONAST Dr. Dayananda Bajracharya described the incident as abnormal. He informed that they received letter from Ministry of Science recently adding they will decide later whether to send investigation team or not.

Bomjan has asked the people not to call him a Buddha, as he doesn?t have the Buddha's energy saying he is at the level of rinpoche.

?I need six years of deep meditation,? reports quoted Bomjan as saying. nepalnews.com pb Nov 23 05

According to my understanding, one doesn't become buddha merely by doing meditation. Buddha did meditation, yoga n' all other sorts of craps before getting enlightenment. But he renounce all of them and he got his buddhahood after eating sujata's kheer. He formally said that all these may not be necessary to reach buddhahood. But meditation or yoga does help to get more concentration power and bring oneself into discipline. It might be the beginning. But saying buddha to someone just because he has mastered meditation won't be logical. It's like praying as god to abnormal childs or animals born in Nepal.

Looks like a tabloid-ized version to me.
Buddhahood is a middle-way.The path that balances between self-mortification and self-indulgence.The avoidance of extremes.Bomjan is practising self-mortification so he cannot yet be labeled as Buddha.
Self-serving dogmatic principle seems to be functioning well in Bomjan's case.Remember, how the world blindly accepted the news of Ganesh drinking milk few years back.
Most of the hindus like myself who have became victimized by our urge for instant gratification that is followed by the worship is contradictory to basic Buddhist beliefs. The deification of Bomjan is simply wrong. His hermitness seeking knowledge might be praiseworthy but worship derails the enlightenment if thats what the boy is looking forward to.

I think that the boy did say that he is not Buddha (referring to the statement "one doesn't become buddha merely by doing meditation"). Well anyways I have no idea bout anything as such. But anyways, it is pretty astonishing if the boy has not eaten anything for six months. And not drank anything either. Seems like the boy does have some divine powers, otherwise a person can hardly survive without water for no. of days. Tara I am confused about this stuff. All seems so unbelievable... but what the heck. If people believe in Sai Baba(who I think is a total fake!), then why not believe in him!

Gwajyo,
I do concur with your estimation regarding the concerned subject at hand; however I also feel that your concluding statement was uncalled for. Agreed that you may have used "abnormal child" as a metaphor, and it may not take away the gist of your opinion; that said, don't you think it was rather insensitive to use those children to strengthen your argument?

Not trying to be nitpicky, but us being born as "normal" children is all the more reason to be extra careful not to plaster them in anything insensitive way. Again, my apology for the sake of apology! Just in case you might take my sermon in bad taste.

Regarding the topic at hand, I am as skeptical as any other person, but on the face value, "assuming that the information did not multifold" as it was narrated from one to anothe; the child must be something special. Again my assumption is striclty based upon the notion that what is being splashed is true in "actuality".

Thank you ( In the spirit of thanks giving ;), whatever that means)

IndisGuise:)

C'mon people, don't be too hasty with your judgements. Last I checked, none of you are Buddhas or anywhere near Buddhahood. Am I right? So go easy on what is right and what is wrong and what is the middle way and what not.

Ram Bomzon has not said he is a Buddha. Nor is he the one propagating all the mysterious and mythical phenomenons. The way I see it, he just wanted to go to the jungle and meditate in his own way. Whatever news/rumor/inuendo that is circulating, it is being done by the people, not him.

So please let him be.

If he is successful in whatever he has set out to do, be it enlightenment or be it peace in his mind, it is good for all of us and for the world.

Rhythm: agreed on his mastered power on meditation. But it might not necessarily mean to possess so called divine power. We, nepalis, always have a wrong notion to believe that if other person is doing wrong, why can't we do the same (in response to your argument about sai baba)?

IndisGuise, I appreciate his determination. He really have super-strength and has control over himself. I'm amazed by his control power coz' we don't have control even on ourself. Getting control and knowledge on ourself is what I believe the real spirituality.

Agreed on whatever chatmandude has said.

Gwajo: I did not mean to say devine.. din notice I had used that word. The word I should have used is .. I cant think about it but it has to be something out of the ordinary. He SHOULD have some powers.. man not drinking anything for 6 months!! And about Sai Baba. I did not really understand what you were trying to say. i dont thin that the boy looked at Sai baba and said.. "WOW I wanna be like that too!!"

The point I was trying to prove is that people are blindly believing the man who has his private airport, airplane, a 'rath' made out of solid gold, has been accused of being gay (from people of different countries who do not have any connection) and has had several murder at his own home... (he could have used his money for better purpose such as feeding the several hungry and homeless people of India than spending it on divine luxury!). Then why not believe on a 15 year old who had nothing except the shelter of a tree. I dont believe that he is asking for anythin in return now is he? I was trying to emphasize on how people are ready to believe what the society says is right. People are blind to all the faults of the so called 'reincarnation-of-god' but are ready to point their fingers at a mere kid who is doing nuthin but meditating!

""Thousands of people are pouring into the dense jungle of southern Nepal to worship Bomjan as a new Buddha. The thick forest has been converted into a market following the popularity of the new Buddha boy.

Harey ram ram, kye bhanya?

Anyway, this incident reminds me of one period in Nepal few years back when it seemed like in every neighborhood there was someone possessed by god. Considering how many gods there are in Hinduism, their presence in many could well be possible. Besides Hindu god is also omni-present.
Alright jokes aside, I was quite curious about these incidents that I went to witness one.
There was a lady in her mid-life, next to her was a younger lady with a notebook and a pen, and few other men on the side. People were circling the ?sukul? where these people were sitting to watch god take over human body. Everybody including me was waiting for that moment, the moment the lady with the notebook said would come at anytime. Then all of a sudden, the older lady started to blurt out some things that were not quite comprehendible, shaking her entire body, rolling her eyeballs while the other lady took notes of it. Almost everyone in the crown started to join there hands, close their eyes and pray before the lady thinking she was god. People even started asking her questions about future keeping the other lady busy taking notes. The event was quite hilarious and sad in the sense that a lot of people still believed that super natural power could exist in normal human beings, or like gwajyo put, in ?abnormal? human beings.

What fascinates me is not the eating or drinking part, honestly. Not knowing enough, I am skeptical. What fascinates me is a 15 year old meditating for last six months. I am sure you know of 15 year old boys and remember how we were when we were 15. Someone so young, so thriving went to the jungle and sat under a pipal tree for 6 months!!! Fascinating!! I am sure this boy will change lives and may be (a big may be) help in bringing peace to the nation known for producing buddhas.

of course, this story would have been more important if it's the 15 year oldboy meditating for SIX months with occasionally eating and drinking.

But this story is not credible at all.... as the story says he hasbeen sitting there for SIX months without eating or drinking... WITHOUT DRINKING? C'mon... don't be so idiots.

I think it's the job of these media people to put their people in front of this guy 24 hours 7 days a week watching to make sure if this guy is actually NOT DRINKING WATER (LIQUID) for even 2 weeks!!!!

But, six months have already passed... and the boy is still alive... but without drinking liquid.. this alone makes this story eligible to be dumped into the dust bin.

I completely agree with SHIV and Learner_1.
I am sure even if the media people wanted to keep an eye on the boy, the committee that has been created to collect donations from this event would not allow that to happen. Allowing to keep surveillance on the boy could cut their source of income. And people who are stupid enough to believe are the ones who turn this kind of event into a business for some crooks.
In a land of many illiterate people, it is very easy for some crooks to abuse people?s beliefs and thoughts towards their interest.

Skepticism is understood and I would not believe all of what media says either. Having an open mind is important, rather than thrashing it. This story does deserve attention, at least to me. I am sure we will hear more about this boy in the future and I will be looking forward to meeting him once he completes his meditation, achieves his goal and comes out of the jungle. Once I get a chance to meet him then I will post my opinion. At this point I am skeptical of all the media hype however it has moved me to some extent.
Let Buddha reign and Peace rule,
-Shiv

A boy going to jungle to meditate is better than a boy going to jungle to pick up arms.

Buddhas donot emerge from self-tortue or what Buddha himself called it self-mortification.I find that notion prematurely un-buddhist.
Buddhism is science as much as it is a religion.A 15-year old would have been dead without food for more than a month.Six months, heck with it?
All the tapasvis/rishimunis would have died with an inadequate supplement in their system while meditating.Pardon my bluntnessIt's a myth.Let's be pragmatic.
As far as the supernatural possession is concerned we cannot jump into coclusion before Bamzan endows sight to a blind.

We're not saying that he is doing bad. He has some skills which he has mastered, and it's really praiseworthy to see this at his young age. But still it doesn't make him as god or buddha. As shiva has said, we're waiting for messiah to save and liberate us. But I'm not looking for anyone who'll come and save us or bring peace to Nepal. I can never get convinced about the coming of world leader or messiah.

I am moved by this event but will the boy be able to achieve his goal with all the people around?? He is still meditating extensively means that he has not achieved what he wants to achieve.
I hope he will get what he is looking for and help us all.
