Follow the link above. It took exactly 85 days  for me to receive my new passport. This was the second time that I'd renewed from US. During the processing period, if you want to check the status, you can call the embassy and they'll let you when you should be expecting.

Thank you guys for the reply. Bi-Polar, I was just wondering if there is any risk of losing the original passport and citizenship?

The website has got almost everything you might need. Few tips for you:
- It's better you send them a prepaid envelope and ask them to send the correct application form.
- The photo size is not the usual 2x2 photo that we get in the CVS/Walgreen. But I talked to them and they said I can send the 2x2 and
they will do the necessary adjustment. The only thing is don't stick them in the form. Send them unattached.
- Fill up the form neat. No corrections.
- Be extra careful when you get the thumb print on the filled-up form. No touchings in the border,  they say.
- Send a copy of the citizenship certificate and the original. The website mentions a copy, but when I inquired they said if we don't send     the originial, the processing time may be longer because it has to go through verification process in Nepal.

I just got my renewed passport three days ago, after 71 days since I mailed it through USPS. They were quick in responding whenever I sent them email.

I didn't send my original citizenship card either, just 2 photo copies. Give it  around 3 months turnaround time and you should be fine.

Don't you think 3 months turnaround time is really bad for something as basic for a passport?

make sure that if you are printing your own application form, the form must be printed in A4 SIZE and NOT letter size that is used in the US.

Also like someone said above about pictures, its not 2x2!

you can buy stamp pad at walmart or dollar tree for $1. you can also paint your thumbs with sharpie or any other markers and do the lapchhey chhap. make sure the color of thumb print is black or dark blue!

Everyone:

Just so let you know I just got my new passport yesterday. Some important things to be considered are:

1) Either get an application form from the Embassy (they will mail it to you but you need to send the paid mailing envelope) OR, print it in A4 size paper. Do not print in normal photocopy paper (size differs...google it, you would know)

2) Although they say lot of stuffs about the photo size and all in their website, they accept 2*2 photo. However, make sure you have a plan (an if possible, plain white) background. Walmart or CVS people have good idea on sizes...from head to neck and blah blah...

3) Do not stick photo on the application form. Put the photo in the ziplog bag....

4) Be extra cautious while signing on the form and thumb-stamping. In both the cases, make sure its inside the box....

5) Normal time is 2 to 3 months....You can inquire them if past 3 months....

Let me know if you have any specific question. Have a good day everyone!!!!

I spoke to one of the embassy staff recently, he was super rude, and he made it sound like he is doing a big favor to us.
In fact they charge us $150, in Nepal that is the amount you pay to get your passport expedited within 48 hours.
Here they take more than 3 months to get your passport renewed and they do lotta Naatak, they sent my application back first time because the paper size was not correct. BS

Any 'more recent' experiences anyone? How long did it take to get yours? I emailed them but their response was generic.

_, when did you apply? I applied for mine back a little over 2 months ago. Nothing as of now. Got a feeling govt. officials back home are still trying to sober up after holidays.

I made a soft inquiry last week and the guy working in passport section was pouring his frustration for being swamped w/ a pile of applications that he had to go through everyday. I'd try calling them directly instead of sending an email.

Few comments here:
- The lady at Embassy try to speak English, however great leader Mr. Putin or Chinese president speak their own language in international events without of guilt (and they are proud of it, why not we Nepalese)
- Embassy needs to learn some US culture of great customer service.
- Embassy needs to accept our personal checks as USCIS does.
- They should be able to send a notification of our application receipt (What is the purpose of our email/phone number)
- They charge us so much money, why return envelope?

I agree with dindukhi. It is a common courtesy to send email or phone notification of application receipt, passport approved, or if there is some mistake in the document I called after three weeks to find that my money order had a mistake in it. Also, it is not acceptable for an embassy official to make a comment like  "Malai K thaha kaha khichne photo. Aroo le ta khuru khuru pathai rachan"
