As a great fish swims between the banks of a river as it likes, so does the shining Self move between the states of dreaming and waking. -Brihadaranyaka Upanishad How can I accept or reject anything? Is there anything apart or distinct from Brahman? Now, finally and clearly, I know that I am the Atman, whose nature is eternal joy. I see nothing. I hear nothing. I know nothing that is separate from me. -Sankara

The demonic do things they should avoid and avoid the things that they should do. They have no sense of uprightness, purity, or truth. "There is no God," they say, "no truth, no spiritual law, no moral order. The basis of life is sex; what else can it be?" Holding such distorted views, possessing scant discrimination, they become enemies of the world, causing suffering and destruction. -Bhagavad Gita 16:7-9 Never say in weakness, "This task is too difficult," For perseverance will give the ability to accomplish it. -Tirukkural 611

He does not see the world. So what does he care for joy or sorrow, Bondage or liberation? He is infinite and shining. Before the awakening of understanding The illusion of the world prevails. But the master is free of passion. He has no "I," He has no "mine," And he shines! -Ashtavakra Gita 18:72-73

Even a little effort toward spiritual awareness will protect you from the greatest fear. Those who follow this path, resolving deep within themselves to seek Me alone, attain singleness of purpose. For those who lack resolution, the decisions of life are many-branched and endless. -Bhagavad Gita 2:40-41 When the Self is known, All illusions vanish. The veil falls, And you see clearly. Your sorrows are dispelled. For the Self is free And lives forever. Everything else is imagination, Nothing more! Because he understands this, The master acts like a child. -Ashtavakra Gita 18:6-7

What is yesterday, Tomorrow, Or today? What is space, Or eternity? I sit in my own radiance. What is the Self, Or the not-Self? What is thinking, Or not thinking? What is good or evil? I sit in my own splendor. ***** [The Master] is blessed. He understands the nature of the Self. His mind is no longer thirsty. He is the same under all conditions, Whatever he sees or hears, Or smells or touches or tastes. -Ashtavakra Gita 18:65

Do all your duties, but keep your mind on God. Serve your wife, children, father, and mother, and treat them as if they are very dear to you, but know in your heart that they do not belong to you. -Ramakrishna

Those who live in accordance with these divine laws without complaining, firmly established in faith, are released from karma. Those who violate these laws, criticizing and complaining, are utterly deluded, and are the cause of their own suffering. -Bhagavad Gita 3:31-32 Disparaging words pain a man even when uttered in jest. Therefore, those who know human nature are courteous even to their enemies. -Tirukkural 100:995

"As rivers lose their private name and form When they reach the sea, so that people speak Of the sea alone, so all these sixteen Forms disappear when the Self is realized. Then there is no more name and form for us, And we attain immortality." -Prashna Upanishad

Nachiketa learned from the kind of death The whole discipline of meditation. Freeing himself from all separateness, He won immortality in Brahman. So blessed is everyone who knows the Self! OM shanti shanti shanti -Katha Upanishad ********************************* The Atman is the witness of the mind and its workings. -Sankara ********************************* As a caterpillar, having come to the end of one blade of grass, draws itself together and reaches out for the next, so the Self, having come to the end of one life and dispelled all ignorance, gathers in his faculties and reaches out from the old body to a new. -Brihadaranyaka Upanishad ********************************** "I am not this." "I am He." Give up such distinctions. Know that everything is the Self. Rid yourself of all purpose. And be happy. -Ashtavakra Gita

The fool practices concentration And control of the mind. But the master is like a man asleep. He rests in himself And finds nothing more to do. -Ashtavakra Gita ****************************** The rituals and the sacrifices described In the Vedas deal with lower knowledge. The sages ignored these rituals And went in search of higher knowledge. ... Such rituals are unsafe rafts for crossing The sea of samsara, of birth and death. Doomed to shipwreck are those who try to cross The sea of samsara on these poor rafts. Ignorant of their own ignorance, yet wise In their own esteem, these deluded men Proud of their vain learning go round and round Like the blind led by the blind. -Mundaka Upanishad ********************************** Feeble with age, Still he is filled with desire, When without doubt he knows That lust is the enemy of awareness. Indeed how strange! -Ashtavakra Gita
