To Live is a classic! Chutecha.. thanks for reminding me. Gong Li is brilliant in that movie. 30 eyars of Chinese history in less than 3 hrs.

The House of the Flying Daggers..Zhang didn't make it for China. He made it for Hollywood.

The Road Home is a good movie.. but compared to other Zhang movies, its alright. I won't give it a 5 star rating. Don't get me wrong, it has everything you expect in a Zhang movie- brilliant photography, a good story line, great actors and all that... The most impressive scene in that movie is when the mom is telling the story.. and slowly black and white starts to fade.. replacing it with vivid colors of a Chinese countryside and you see this close up of youg Zhang Ziyi in her colorful clothes.. that's just brilliant.

Yiou might alos be interested in the Golden Bear winner at the Cannes: Farewell my Conccubine by Chen Kaige. Its a long movie but worth it.

This Christmas anther big movie will be released- Memoirs of a Geisha, with Zhang Ziyi playing the Geisha girl.

But this lacks something. You enjoy while you are watching it but it failes to leave you a lasting impression like The Red Shorghum, To Live or Ju Dou or even The Story of Qiu Jiu. I became a fan of the Fifth generation Chinese movies for their symbolism.. the symbolism, which made Zhang, Chen, Hong famous is missing in this movie or is too obvious. That's the reason, I don't give this movie a very high rating.. but, afno afno bichar ho. kaslai k , kaslai k maan parcha , hoina ta?:-)

baru try some Japanese movies too. Kurawasa made some good movies.

Here are some of my.............. movies
------------------------------------------------

"Good Will Hunting"_____The most favourite movie of mine of all times. An emotional struggle waged by a young genius Will Hunting (Matt Damon) with himself from the deep scars of deeply grey and sad childhood into an adulthood by the help of a university professor Sean Maguire (Robin Williams). Other casts include: Ben Affleck, Stellan Skarsgard, Minnie Driver

i love the scenes in the road home that have zhang ziyi running through the countryside, and especially with her bright clothes! the whole story is just so sweet and innocent and i love when he goes to say goodbye to her the first time and gives her the clip for her hair. that's really the only interaction the two characters have in the entire movie that lasts more than a few seconds. the music is also so crucial to how beautiful the overall effect of the movie is.

i still have yet to see red sorghum and i was somewhat disappointed with ju dou. gong li is fantastic, as is zhang ziyi. hmmmm....zhang ziyi as a geisha?! ma ta herna janchhu ni!

Isolated Freak: Darshan!:)

I watched HERO. I loved the colorplay in every scene. A live action art work of "Chrysanthemum and the Sword". The intricate wrist movements in both sword play and caligraphy. The TAO of the opposites.
one scene: Passionate red against a swirl of falling leaves
another: Blue, Blue, blue of the water slashed in slow motion by the warriors' grey sword
another: Black clothes against synchronically falling green curtains
another: Finally the scene of death; a golden sun drenched desert with the dying characters in off-white.

hey hey indi!

Sitara jyu, maile po darshan bhanna parney.

Hero iis good but i think in hollywood it got overrated because its a Zhang movie. I didn't find anything symbolic or spiritually enligtening in that movie. its like watching Crouching Tiger..tara afno afno bichar ho.. maybe i was busy seacrhing for hidden symbols in that movie:-) and totally missed the Dao (the way) and "Crysanthamum and the sword" stuff, even though I am a big fan of Ruth Benedict. :-). All I could get in it was the Pattern of Qin dynasty culture".

PG,
yeah, Zhang is playing geisha. The movie will be out in december, 2005 rey!

I personally think Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon better than Hero. Thinking of watching house of flying daggers this weekend. Is it even playing, I need to check.

I loved 'Finding Neverland', you guys should watch it.

Not exactly emotional, but "Sideways" is another great movie.

The Emperor and the Assassin (1998)___An epic heart wrenching tragic story that narrates the story of China's first emperor Yeng Zheng. Only at the end we see the true nature of people and their real intentions. Starring Gong Li.

Beautiful Minds___starring Russel Crowe, Jennifer Connelly

Aaaanch Sitara hazurrr, LOL...
"Hero" was a good movie, watched it twice in the theater, same week tyo pani... haha. The actions were poetic :P, they just flowed... Slow motions, eye catching colors and how-did-they-do-that stunts... :) Would have liked it better if it came before "crouching Tiger". The story telling was something different... on the line of "Run Lola Run" and "Usual Suspects"... tara at the end of the movie, I felt like I've already seen it... ke ke... eh. That's the only reason why I can't drag my bones to go watch "House of the flying daggers"... (They use Khukuri in the movie... eheh)... Might go today if it didn't snow...

I watched "Phantom of the Opera" yesterday baru... tyo pani "Hero" jastai. At the end there was something missing in the movie. Soundtrack (of course) was awesome, especially the theme song when the Phantom takes the girl to the dungeon. Rest of the movie, it seems like the same song keeps on repeating again and again. I thought it had some other beautiful songs in the original play, eh, khoi ... Or Webber should have composed something new... or at least changed the tune of the songs of did something... It would have been an awesome movie... geet le maarrr khaayo... eh.

Aviator was also the same. Ke napugya ke... despite the awesome performances by Dicaprio and Blanchett (She walked, talked and acted just like Katherine Hepburn... aaah)...

Closer still the one of the most satisfyin' movies of the year... ehehe....

Alexander heryo pachi I almost cried tho... ehehe... Oliver Stone just fked up Alexander... like he fked up Natural Born Killers. eh...

hey sitara,

did you also see flying daggers? what did you think? and what about in relation to hero? i think flying daggers was even more visually stunning- the scene with the soldiers dressed in green walking through the bamboo forests and the scene where zhang ziyi is dancing and beating the drums with her scarves and sleeves- oh, SO BREATHTAKING!!!

ani iso-freak, i do agree with you that zhang made hero and flying daggers, although they are both rooted deeply in chinese history and legend, for hollywood. but they are still visually wonderful filims.....feasts for the eyes! by the way, do you know who will be directing geisha?
