Police Hit Man in Genitals With Taser

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. - Police accidentally hit a naked man in the genitals with a Taser after he was caught breaking windows and asking women to touch him, authorities said.

Jeremy J. Miljour, 26, tried to run away when sheriff's deputies approached so one of them shot their Taser, said Cpl. Matt Chitwood. But one of the gun's prongs accidentally hit Miljour's genitals and got stuck, Chitwood said.

"The Taser is relatively accurate, but when someone is moving like that, it doesn't matter if you have a Taser, or a pistol. (Officers) can't aim," Chitwood said.

Miljour was treated at a hospital before being taken to the Lee County jail. He was charged with indecent exposure, resisting an officer and criminal damage

A 23-year-old Mexican man hacked open his father's head after a row and then ate his brain in the western state of Michigan, justice sources said on Wednesday.

They said the suspect took a machete and rained blows on his 62-year-old parent, cracking open his skull after the father failed to calm his son following an argument.

The son went on to drink blood from the gaping wound in his father's head before eating the man's brains during the incident in the town of Indaparapeo.

Officials have so far been unable to confirm neighbours' accounts that the son had mental problems.

An Egyptian schoolteacher hacked his three children to death "as martyrs" to spite his bossy wife for years of humiliation and abuse, a government-owned newspaper reported on Friday.

"My wife is to blame for everything. She took over everything: our seven-storey building, car, the money in the bank, the product of 12 years working abroad," the paper quoted the man's confession as saying.

"She considered us, our children and me, as private property," it added.

"She always had the last word, up to the point where she ordered me to spend the night in the park near the house. I ended up hating her, but I adored my children, before whom I felt I was no longer a man.

"Therefore I decided to sacrifice them as martyrs to break my wife's heart," the newspaper quoted the man as saying.

Thar she blows! Dead whale explodes

Taiwanese street, shops showered after gases built up inside

TAIPEI - Residents of Tainan learned a lesson in whale biology after the decomposing remains of a 60-ton sperm whale exploded on a busy street, showering nearby cars and shops with blood and organs and stopping traffic for hours.

The 56-foot-long whale had been on a truck headed for a necropsy by researchers, when gases from internal decay caused its entrails to explode in the southern city of Tainan.

Residents and shop owners wore masks while trying to clean up the spilt blood and entrails.

"What a stinking mess. This blood and other stuff that blew out on the road is disgusting, and the smell is really awful," a BBC News report quoted one Tainan resident as saying

Jan. 17 after it beached itself on the southwestern coast of the island.

Researchers at the National Cheng Kung University in Tainan said enough of the whale remained to allow for an examination by marine biologists.

Once moved to a nearby nature preserve, the male specimen -- the largest whale ever recorded in Taiwan -- drew the attention of locals because of its large penis, measured at some five feet, the Taipei Times reported.

"More than 100 Tainan city residents, mostly men, have reportedly gone to see the corpse to 'experience' the size of its penis," the newspaper reported.

Doctors fight over chair, patients run for cover: Report

Patients, who had gone for treatment at the Out-Patient Department (OPD) of the Narayani sub-regional hospital, at Birgunj and their relatives had to run for their own safety after two medical officers resorted to fist-fighting over chair in front of patients, a leading daily reported.

According to Nepal Samacharpatra daily, Dr. Raghabendra Thakur and Dr. Kush Raj Giri were checking patients at the medical department of the hospital since 9:45 a. m. on Wednesday. Another medical officer, Dr. Akhilesh Singh, arrived for duty at 10:15 a. m. and turned furious when he saw that Dr. Giri was checking patients occupying his chair.

Dr. Singh not only verbally abused Dr. Giri but also manhandled him resulting into fist-fighting between the two doctors. Patients, who were awaiting their turn for check-up, had no option but to run away.

Dr. Giri alleged that Dr. Singh, who arrived late on duty, even tried to bite him on the chest. ?I have received only minor injuries as I was wearing thick clothes for winter season,? he added.

Medical superintendent of the hospital, Dr. Murali Prasad Singh, said he has constituted a three-member committee led by Dr. B. K. Jha to probe into the incident.

The committee is expected to submit its report on Thursday, the news report said.

The incident, which took place between two medical professionals?who are supposed to maintain high ethical standard -- has baffled many, according to reports. nepalnews.com by Nov 24 05

Baltimore Losing Light Poles to Thieves

BALTIMORE - City streets are getting darker because thieves, some disguised as utility crews, are stealing 30-foot light poles, authorities said.

About 130 aluminum light poles have vanished this fall from locations across the city, despite the difficulty of carting off the 250-pound objects.

The culprits have even dressed up as utility crews, city officials say, and placed orange traffic cones around the poles they are about to take down to avoid making motorists suspicious. Police have no suspects in the thefts, first reported in The (Baltimore) Sun.

Police say the thieves could be stealing the poles, which cost the city $750 each, to sell as scrap metal. For at least a decade, authorities suspect drug addicts have ripped metal pipes, radiators and wires out of vacant houses to pay for their next fix.

Scrap aluminum brings 30 to 35 cents a pound, according to local metal dealers.

Local salvage yards haven't reported seeing any of the stolen poles, perhaps because of a city ordinance requiring scrap-metal dealers to record personal information of people bringing in metal goods.

Some who work there, however, say they wouldn't be surprised if the poles were being sold somehow.

"They steal everything here in Baltimore," said Lynn Smith, manager at Modern Junk & Salvage Co. "Nothing's too kooky to me anymore."

The problem is not new. In 1988, authorities in New York accused two men of prying off pieces of the Brooklyn Bridge and selling them to a scrap metal dealer. Damage to the historic span was estimated at $37,000.

Silence becomes applause in Best's memory

LONDON (Reuters) - Fans burst into a minute's spontaneous applause, instead of observing a minute's silence, before Wolverhampton Wanderers' home game against Southampton on Saturday in a moving tribute to George Best.
The Premier and Football leagues had called for silence before all this weekend's games in memory of the Manchester United great, who died in a London hospital on Friday.

But supporters, players and club officials at Molineux all opted to pay the continental tribute of applause before kick-off of the second division game -- the first match of the day.

Players of both teams also wore black armbands as a mark of respect.

Applause, rather than silence, for Best was already planned by fans in Scotland before Celtic's match against Dunfermline Athletic later on Saturday.

Newspapers, former players and managers, along with the game's leading officials, also paid tribute to the footballing genius from Northern Ireland.

"Remember him today at 3pm" read the back page of Saturday's Daily Mirror over a picture of Best walking away in his distinctive red Manchester United shirt adorned with the famous number seven.

Best, who died of multiple organ failure after a lifetime of heavy drinking, will be buried in Belfast next Friday alongside the grave of his mother Ann.

Nepal to probe mystery 'Buddha' boy

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Authorities in Nepal urged religious groups and scientists on Sunday to help solve the mystery of a meditating teenaged boy who some believe is an incarnation of Buddha.

At least 100,000 devotees from Nepal and neighbouring India have flocked in recent weeks to a dense forest in southeastern Nepal to see 15-year-old Ram Bahadur Bamjon, who, his associates say, has been meditating without food or water for six months.

Shanta Raj Subedi, district administrator of Bara, 150 km (95 miles) southeast of Kathmandu and where the boy is meditating, said he had requested the Lumbini Development Trust, a Buddhist panel, and the Royal Nepal Academy of Science and Technology to get to the bottom of the mystery.

"We want to investigate claims that the boy has survived for so long without food or drink," Subedi said.

Bamjon sits cross-legged beneath a "pipal" tree, which is sacred to Hindus, with his eyes closed in meditation. He does not speak and followers are only allowed to see him from a distance of 50 metres (165 feet).

The young mystic is hidden from public view at night behind a curtain drawn by his followers. Doctors observing from a distance have said the boy is breathing normally but is weak.

Local journalist Govinda Devkota, who has visited the site,

said the boy sits with a shawl across his chest from armpit to shoulder, in the same posture as Buddha is shown in pictures.

The number of visitors had reached up to 10,000 a day but fewer people are going to the retreat now, he said.

"He sits motionless from dawn to dusk when visitors are allowed to see him. This demands something," said Devkota. "But whether he is an incarnation of Buddha, I have doubts because we don't know what he does at night. This must be investigated."

His mother, Maya Devi -- the same name as that of Buddha's mother -- said Bamjon, the third of her seven children, is a quiet boy who kept aloof from friends.

"Initially, I was worried about him. But now I am happy. He is in devotion to Buddha," Devi told Nepali daily, Rajdhani.

Buddha, who founded Buddhism, was born a prince in Lumbini, a dusty village in Nepal's rice growing plains about 350 km (218 miles) west of the capital Kathmandu, over 2,600 years ago.

He attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya in the eastern Indian state of Bihar that borders Nepal.

Vandals hit Bruce Lee statue in Bosnia

MOSTAR, Bosnia-Hercegovina (AFP) - A new statue honouring late martial arts legend Bruce Lee was vandalised hours after it was unveiled in this southern Bosnian city, police and witnesses said.

"We have received reports that the statue has been damaged. We are currently investigation the incident," a police officer in Mostar said.

The life-size bronze statue of the kung fu cinema icon in a defensive position holding nun chucks, part of kung fu equipment, was unveiled during an emotional ceremony here Saturday.

The chain and one of the nun chucks' sticks were missing and empty wine bottles were scattered around the statue in a city park, according to an AFP reporter.

Several dozen citizens gathered in the park on Sunday morning and expressed their disgust.

"It is a crime!" said one.

"Once again we've shown what Balkan savageness is!" lamented another in disbelief.

The park's nightkeeper, Veljo Dojcinovic, told AFP he saw a group of teenage hooligans entering the park in the middle of the night.

"I heard a loud bang but I was alone and I couldn't stop them. Police should have been more agile. They know that hooligans visit this park regularly," he said.

Lee was chosen as a hero that all ethnic groups could relate to in a city that remains bitterly divided after fierce fighting between Croats and Muslims during the country's 1992-95 war.

In a rare show of unity some 300 Bosnian Croats and Muslims attended the unveiling ceremony.

"Bruce Lee 1940-1973. Your Mostar" is the only text written on the base of the statue.

Earlier Sunday a bronze statue to the late martial arts legend was unveiled in Hong Kong in a ceremony on what would have been Lee's 65th birthday.

Teen With Peanut Allergy Dies After Kiss

SAGUENAY, Quebec - A 15-year-old girl with a peanut allergy died after kissing her boyfriend, who had just eaten a peanut butter snack, hospital officials said Monday.

Christina Desforges died in a Quebec hospital Wednesday after doctors were unable to treat her allergic reaction to the kiss the previous weekend.

Desforges, who lived in Saguenay, about 155 miles north of Quebec City, was almost immediately given a shot of adrenaline, a standard tool for treating the anaphylactic shock brought on by a peanut allergy, officials said.

An autopsy was being performed. Dr. Nina Verreault, an allergist at the Chicoutimi Hospital in Saguenay, declined to comment on the case.

The symptoms of peanut allergy can include hives, plunging blood pressure and swelling of the face and throat, which can block breathing.

Peanut allergies have been rising in recent decades. The reason remains unclear but one study found that baby creams or lotions with peanut oil may cause children to develop allergies later in life.

About 1.5 million Americans are severely allergic to even the smallest trace of peanuts and peanut allergies account for 50 to 100 deaths in the United States each year. Canadian figures were not immediately available.

The rapping grans

Think of rap and what springs to mind - ghetto gangsters, guns and bling-bling jewellery?

Well this group are breaking the mould.

The Silver wRappers are now taking on the likes on Eminem and 50 Cent.

The group, which will rap at the Sage Gateshead in December, have only been together since January.

Story continues

The group of 12 over-50s came together through a partnership between Newcastle College and the Sage Gateshead.

And it wasn't long before the Silver wRappers, part of the Silver Strand - the umbrella name for all courses for over-50s - were soon writing their own songs.

Margaret Hall, an 80-year-old from South Shields, travels to the Sage Gateshead several times a week to rehearse.

She said: "It's absolutely fascinating. I had no idea of what rap was. Now I know it stands for rhythm and poetry.

"We are learning a lot and having fun at the same time. I look forward to attending every week."

And another rapper, Ann Moore, 65 from Bedlington, said: "My grandaughter thinks it's brilliant that I'm in a rap group and has said I should go for it.

"It just shows that although we are over 50 we shouldn't be written off. We still have a lot to give and a lot to say.

"I also think there the course is great as it gives us an inter-generational link. My grandaughter now calls me Mrs Puff Daddy."

Gilly Love, the Sage Gateshead's Silver Strand leader, who also came up with the idea, said: "It has been a very interesting experience for everyone involved.

"Some members merely associated rap with the likes of Eminem and Puff Daddy, while others had no idea what rap was all about.

"Creating the lyrics for the raps has been great fun and certainly a learning experience for everyone.

"We talked about so many topics - politics, Christmas presents, getting old and the stereotypes that come with it and much more.

"Our lyrics are unique and mean something different to each of the 12 students.

"The challenge of finding a rhythmic musical backing more appropriate to the age group than hip-hop has been exciting and interesting too."

The Silver wRappers are made up of people from hugely diverse backgrounds and are a variety of ages.

Others in the group agreed that while they were nervous at first, they are now definite rap fans.

They said they are pleased to be learning and thinking through rap and they believe it is now a great new medium in which they can express themselves freely.

Woman has first face transplant

The woman had lost her nose, lips and chin after being savaged by a dog.

In the controversial operation, tissues, muscles, arteries and veins were taken from a brain-dead donor and attached to the patient's lower face.

Doctors stress the woman will not look like her donor, but nor will she look like she did before the attack - instead she will have a "hybrid" face.

It has been technically possible to carry out such a transplant for some years, with teams in the US, the UK and France researching the procedure.

Skin from another person's face is better for transplants as it will be a better match than skin from another part of the patient's body, which could have a different texture or colour.

But the ethical concerns of a face transplant, and the psychological impact to the patient of looking different has held teams back.

Concerns relating to immunosuppression, psychological impact and the consequence of technical failure have so far prevented ethical approval of the procedure in the UK, though doctors here are full able to perform transplants.

'Gravely disfigured'

The 38-year-old French patient from the northern French town of Valenciennes underwent extensive counselling before her operation, which is believed to have lasted at least five hours, and which took place at the weekend at a hospital in Amiens.

The French magazine Le Point reports that the tissues, muscles, arteries and veins needed for the transplant were taken from a multi-organ donor in the northern city of Lille, who was brain-dead.

The operations were carried out by a team led by Professor Bernard Devauchelle and Professor Jean Michel Dubernard.

In a statement, the hospital said the woman had been gravely disfigured in the attack in May this year.

She has been unable to speak or eat properly since.

It added that the woman - who wishes to remain anonymous - was in "excellent general health" and said the graft looked normal

Like any other transplant patient, the woman will have to take immunosuppressant drugs to help her body cope with the donated tissue.

Doctors working in the field say many could benefit from the procedure, including 10,000 burns victims in the UK.

Iain Hutchison, an oral-facial surgeon at Barts and the London Hospital, said: "This is the first face transplant using skin from another person."

But there are medical, and ethical, concerns of facial transplants.

Mr Hutchison, who is chief executive of Saving Faces - the Facial Surgery Research Foundation, warned blood vessels in the donated tissue could clot, the immunosuppressants could fail - and would increase the patient's risk of cancer."

Mr Hutchison added there were ethical and moral issues around donating facial tissue.

"Where donors would come from is one issue that would have to be considered.

"The transplant would have to come from a beating heart donor. So, say your sister was in intensive care, you would have to agree to allow their face to be removed before the ventilator was switched off.

"And there is the possibility that the donor would then carry on breathing."

Stephen Wigmore, chair of British Transplantation Society's ethics committee, said: "The extent of facial expression which will occur in the long term is unknown.

"The skin tends to promote rejection by the immune system very strongly and immunosuppression is likely to need to be kept at high levels for prolonged periods of time.

"It is not clear whether an individual could be left worse off in the event that a face transplant failed."

Mr Michael Earley, a member of the Royal College of Surgeon's facial transplantation working party, said: "If successful, this is a major breakthrough in facial reconstruction.

"It appears that this has been a partial face transplant incorporating the nose and lips; therefore issues relating to similarity in appearance between donor and recipient are unlikely to be a major problem.

"We wish the patient and the team a successful outcome and look forward to learning more about the details of the procedure which could be a major step forward for the facially disfigured."
