Probably this issue has been discussed before but here I am again needing the help........I need to buy another digital camera....I have Sony DSC-85 with 4.0 megapixels camera.......I like it very much.....My sister liked it so I thought I will give to her and buy another one for me......So I am looking something in the price range of $400 to $600...it's for personal use not for commercial use as I am not a pro-photographer.....I heard that it's better to have more more Optical zoom and stick with 3 to 4 megapixels and less digital zoom....what makes the difference in having to have digital zoom and (more) optical zoom....I thought to put this subjest in here since I have been seeing lotta good photographer in here......Any input in this subject will be highly appreciated...........

I recently read the stats on top 10 best selling digital cameras. 6 out of 10 were by Canon. So, if you wanna stick with SONY then I got nothing to say but, if you do wanna buy Canon digital cameras, visit www.opticsplanet.com
Their prices are reasonable. Now, keep one thing in mind when you buy any electronics stuff. You must buy from the 'authorized dealer' and register your product. We gorkhalis don't have that habit of registering products. By doing so, you will get the manufacturers' full warranty if case something happens to your proudct. rest is upto you. I hope it helps.

Ram Prasad,
I have Panasonic AG-DVX100A Pro Mini DV Camcorder. I am having lots of fun with it. I can take pictures as the way I want. Edit, Dvd convert, Pal-Ntsc and Ntsc- Pal converter. Movie tech. Documentory style..etc..etc..etc..

I think, this is the one you should get it.

PremCharo,

I wish I could afford the Panasonic camera that you own.Based on my assumption, I think you are more on a pro-level.The price and the function of the camera speaks for its self.

My advise for Ram Prasad is that you gather feedback from the users of various cameras so that you know the plus and minus points of each and every camera.I think you could then more or less have a easier time choosing the ideal camera.

Cameras with price tag between $400-$600 are usually 4-6 megapixal camera with at least 3 to 5 optical zooms.

Though I use Sony DSC F828, I would not recommend Sony due to thier high priced tag and the compatibilty of the accsories.Unless of course you decide to buy the F828.

I agree with Explorer about Canon.Me too reccomend you Canon.Especilly the IXUS 500 or 450; it is small but packed with functions beyond its size.

Regards,
BHanja

Difference between digital and optical zoom: Digital zoom just multiplies the pixels on the image so that it seems larger than the acutal image (or part of the image if the display can not accomodate the whole amlified image) but the image resolution becomes poorer. Optical zoom actually enlarges the image size on the CCD by projecting the target at longer distance larger. That is with optical zoom you can take pictures of smaller object from a longer distace without compromising the image resolution.

Aghi Laamo Lekhya, Session expired bhanyo, kata udyo udyo... anyway, sortcut ma lekhnu paryo feri... eh

RamPrasad Jyu,
I just bought SONY Cybershot W1 -- works great. Did my research before I bought it -- was hard to find a camera with so many features in it in that PRICE RANGE. Was lookin' for 3 things before I bought it, Optical zoom of 3x or better, 3.2 mega pixel or better and battery power (Heard most of the good cameras have crappy battery power). Beside mega pixel and optical zoom (5.1 MP and 3x OZ), W1 comes with rechargable AA batteries which are amazingly long lasting... and the best thing is that you can replace it with regular AA batteries in emergency. Has auto and manual focus also. Works great for me.. eh!!!

I read it somewhere, if you wanna buy a DIGITAL STILL CAMERA, just look for DIGITAL STILL CAMERA re, not the one with video capability and what not re (although it is hard to find). eh... It's like buying a chinese combo food in the mall eh... Afu lai thaa bhaa yetti ho, Bhanja raaja might know better.. eh.. kahile post garne ho bhanja raja le!! :D

Anyway, happy DC hunting... ;)

IN DIGITAL ZOOM, if you zoom more and more, the quility of picture deteorates because it simply magnifies the image. but in optical zoom , it actually moves its lenses so the quality doesnt deteorates.

http://www.dpreview.com/ is certainly a great place to start. You can also do a side-by-side comparison on this site: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sidebyside.asp

As for price comparison, I would go to http://www.cnet.com/ and find a camera section there. Actually dpreview.com also takes you there.

Just reading through your info, I think you might wanna look at a Canon Powershot G5 (5mpix, 4X4 zoom) or Nikon Coolpix 5400 (5mpix, 4X4zoom). If you want to have a higher optical zoom, Canon Powershot s1 IS is good--it's 3.1mpix, 10x optical zoom, and above all, it's really cheap.. comes around $335-399.

Good luck

Doesn't the Sony Cybershot W1 use a memory stick that is only compatible with Sony? And it's only comes with a 32 MB stick...which is too low for a 5MP camera.

Btw, I see the price of W1 ranging from $340-390..how much did you guys pay for it?

Observer, I have to agree with what you have to say about the Sony camera,Cybershot W1 and other models.Sony's useage of memory stick is one of the factor that stop people from buying thier product as other form cheaper and popular storage is incompatible.

I guess if you have more money to spend then you should go for DSC F828.Currently, it is the only Sony camera to accept both memory stick and CF/Microdrive.Beside the acceptance of different form of storage media, its function makes this camera a worthy to own.But be warned that it is big and bulky !!!

If you need a really good Digital Camera, go for Canon Rebel 300D. It is a SLR Digital Camera and takes super good pictures. Personally I have Canon S30 (which now is less than 200 bucks) and I added attachable lens on it. If you want to see samples of pictures from Canon S30, go here - http://www.backtouniverse.com/photography/ All the pics here are from Canon S30

If you want the Canon Rebel 300D, this is the cheapest place I can find on the internet

For buying Canon S30, check on ebay. It should be lot cheaper now.

Reviews for all the cameras are here, well this is where I do my camera research

Ut2, I think you are a serious photographer.Personally, I would not really go for DSLR due to the high cost of the camera and the lenses.Beside being expensive, it is extremely unconvenient to carry around with different lenses in a big bag.I wholeheartedly agree that S30 and 300D are good cameras.

Personally, I prefer those at pro-sumer level which allows me to have some control and does not require me to carry extra lenses.I own Sony's DSC F828 and I am aware that these promser level cameras are definitely not really for the pro but to me this multi-function camera is the best that I can afford.Beside the picture I took seems all right.

As of now, I will still stick to the prosumer level cameras.Being aware of the limitation of the digital camera when compared with manual, I will just hang on.

Oh yes,Mr Uttim, I like your photos very much. Are you a professional ??
