Devdas is indeed "BRILLIANT." Too bad it is not a Nepali production. It will probably take Kollywood another 75 years to reach that level.

Even in 75 years we can't do it.

The indian cinema is watched by more than a billion and a half people all over the world including. This brings them huge revenue. And Devdas is reputed to be the most costly film costing 45 crore.

Nepali film on the other hand is watched by a smattering of people even within Nepal. A small market may exit among nepali origin people in Darjeling. However they also prefer indian cinema over nepali since they are proud to be indians and because of the quality.

A typical nepali cinema costs below Rs. 15 lakhs. Thus nepali cinema makers won't ever be able to make a high quality film matching the current world wide class.

Though it is not Nepali production, we can listen Ranjeet Gajmer with his madal magic. Ranjeet, you have proved it one more time.

"Welcome Back to Nepal, Ranjeet!" Teach some of our Music Composer to include Madal in their music especially to Mr. Banskota!"

Chandrasurya

Personally I find hindi movies long and an absolute waste of time.
Please let me inform you that people in Darjeeling watch hindi movies as much as or maybe more than people in Nepal but that has nothing to do with being proud of being an Indian. It has much more to do with the easy accessibility and the abundance of cheap entertainment!

Mr. ChandraSurya,

Yes you're absolutely right that Kollywood will not make film like Bollywood in another 75 years. I tell you what Bollywood films are not that great of quality either even after being in film industry for more than about 60 years. It'll take probably another 75 years for Bollywood to get near to Hollywood. You got it.

My point is nepali film was born just a decade ago. They are in steep learning curve. Every body is building from scratch. They are still struggling for the market even within our own country Nepal and win the Nepali audience's support. How do you think they'll ever grow? One of the good reason that our film maker have not been able to make good nepali film is because lack of our own Nepali's people support.

Every single Nepali either you're in Nepal or abroad have to have atleast some kind of patriotism in action to develop our Country and economy. Very few nepali people does that.

In fact I have met nepali people from Darjelling, Kalimpong, Bhutan, Sikkim, Burma and Thailand. They love more nepali literature, watch nepali films, listen nepali music than Nepali people from Nepal. Nepali people from Nepal likes western style music, film and critcise nepali stuff.

Please be supportive to nepali industries, do listen nepali music, do watch nepali movie, suggestions are good but not only negative criticism. Nepali movie maker and music industry have done lot progress than is past and I'm sure one day we can compete Bollywood may be even Hollywood in next ten to 15 years.

Buy Nepali products help Nepal's economy and nepali people in Nepal.

Chandrasurya, the amount is way higher than this. How do I know ? Well, I was associated with movies, on the production side ( limited role). Comparatively, Nepali movies might be lacking behind but I think we have come a long way in last 14-15 years in terms of quality, quantity and the market. Talking about Indian cinema – the industry has lost about $ 100 million last year. I am not saying that we are better than the Indians but we will get there hopefully in 74 years and not 75 :)))).

What is Devdas about? I think most of the Indian movies are stupid. The movie will be about a story 200 yrs old and the gals will be wearing modern clothes and dance on modern music. For me most of the Indian movies are a waste of time. I like hindi songs though.

for me, devdas did not live up to its hype. Just like any other hindi movie. another love story with lots of glitter and glamour. i suppose the only thing that was "different" was that the "hero" dies at the end. thats it.

Nepalese mivei industry will never catch up with hindi movie industry. First of all, isn't there any creative person in Nepali movie industry to come up with some original name? Why "Kallywood?" Something more nepali, original should be the name for the nepali movie industry. And as long an Nepali movie directors try to copy Indain movie style, they will never produce anything extraordinary.
And the budget, well big budget doesn't mean hit movies. Talk about French, Italian, Spanish movies, they are not big budget movies. But they are good because most of the times they are original. Especially French movies. They carry very deep, powerful meanings that Nepali, even hindi movies lack.
So, as long as the movie makers don't change thier strategy of making moveis by not copying everything from Hindi movies, they'll never get better.

And personally, after having watched Hollywood movies, I think Hindi movies are waste of time. The acting sucks (since they have all the models acting now), the story sucks.
Nothing productive from hindi movies. Very unnatural.

Devdas, all about Shahrukh Khan trying to act like Dilip Kumar... new Devdas is nothing compared to the original version... Dilip Kumar's acting was superb...

Okay,
I did watch it -- 3 hours plus movie Devdas.

One guy, two girls. I don't know what pisses the guy in the movie, but he is pissed everytime -- pissed with his father, pissed with his servant, pissed with his girl number 1, girl number 2. This guy number 1 likes girl number 1, and the girl number 2 likes this guy number 1. But, girl number 1 is married to guy number 2 and guy number 1 doesn't really love girl number 2. Girl number 1 cannot desert guy number 2, and guy number 1 cannot have girl number 1. DO YOUR OWN MATH. I waited for 3 hours plus, just to see which of the girls this guy number 1 will get. He gets NONE!! That son of the gun is dead at the end of the movie, leaving both girl number 1 and girl number 2 behind, ruining both of their lives.

Girl number 1 is pretty pretty pretty, girl number two is budhi budhi budhi, Guy number 1 overacts, guy number 2 doesn't act -- there is also a guy number 3, who is a friend of guy number 1. Both of them dances, drinks together. This guy number 3 overacts more than guy number 1.

At the end it was, crap.

Dear Nepali Hindi Movie Fans,
I don't usually watch movies in general and Indians in particular. I read movie reviews fair bit and if the review is good and interesting then I venture out going to movies. Some of the film critics who I have read describe Indian movies of over-exasuration (spl) to the core and meeting the fantasy for the poor people in India and I tend to agree with them. I hope, Devdas is not like that.
Deepak

Dear everybody,
This is my first posting in Sajha, therefore I would want it to be short and sweet:
DEVEDAS IS A GREAT MOVIE

Although many people might be offended by this comment, I am absolutely stationary in this comment.

dire_omen

dire omen of today: Scientist claims to produce human clone

P.S. 1975, Sharukh's acting in this Devdas is far more enchanting than the 2 old versions (first one of Ashok Kumar and the second of Dilip Kumar). In the 1st version, all Ashok Kumar said was: "Paaro.." and all the actress said was: "Devdas..." (with the strange nasal sound.)
On the second version, Dilip Kumar was simply over drunk...a little too much, and we couldnt even understand what he was saying. Thus, this version of Devdas is the BEST!
