My F1 Visa is expiring in January 2010 and I am travelling to Nepal in August of 2009. Since my Visa is so close to its expiration date, I am wondering if it will cause any issue while returning at the Point of Entry? Have any of you had any similar situations?

Also, what are the chances of me being able to renew my visa in Nepal?( and the process) . I completed undergrad and am currently in my first semester of Grad School.

Waiting to hear back from you all.

Thanks

I'm also in the same situation and my undergrad is not finished yet. Actually, I'm stilll in the community college. I'll also be returning on August. So, does this cause any problem, at the port of entry, that my visa is close to expiration?

As long as your visa is valid the day you come back, you should be fine..It does not matter if its expiring soon.

but dont forget to get your new I-20 from the international services office with the signature on it.

all listed above are true.

BUT don't renew your visa in nepal - i mean, don't expect to get your visa renewed as there are several horror stories of denied visa renewal even if you are already in grad school.

better option: go to canada. i personally know few elders from my hometown who went to canada to renew their visa status. sure it is a little expensive, but why take the risk.

If your visa has expired, going to Nepal in hopes of renewing it is a bad bad idea.

Of course other factors come into consideration. For Eg: Your parent's are socially recognized ( i.e. you're a child of a VVIP ) or they're rich or you're attending Harvard or an IVY league school or any other top school on a full ride.

Thanks for the insight guys. I don't think I have any cause to worry about my visit this August then. I did see another thread on renewing visa through Canada on Sajha. Any one know the process or any website that may help getting the answers? I just don't want to not be able to travel in and out of the country after my current visa expires.

Enjoy you weekend!

AS long as you have your I20 signed by the DSO and your I20 is valid there should be no issue. However, since times are tough you never know. It is best to give yourself at least a year before your visa expiration if you are planning to visit. Or else let the visa be expired and still be in school and have your visa renewed  from Mexico (the easiest and hassle free way of doing). Let me tell you my experience:

I have my 4-years visa expired in march 07. I decided to go to Mexico to get my visa renewed in March 08 (the second last semester in my 4 years college). I did get 5 years M visa, I went to Nepal in Summer. Did n't have any problem at PoE. During my interview in Mexico, they asked me if I still went to the 4 years where I had applied for and told me pick up my pp @ 2. I have had a friend of mine did the same thing , he did have no problem. Again, it just fear inside you. You should be okay.
