consultancy thru job garnu ramro ki naramro???

I am a freshly graduated student from computer science field. currently I am on my OPT.   I don't have any work experience besides some projects that I did in college. So I am wondering whether it is a good idea to get a job thru some desi consultancy or try finding a job on my own. what are the advantages n disadvantage of going thru consultancies?? really dont know what to do now. Its really frustrating when you apply for a job in many companies but you dont get any replies or feedback from them. currently i dont have plans of joining masters program for atleast for a year or two.

Quicksilver, you wont unless you apply for an entry level job oryou need to graduate from a very good uni or have good interns to get good jobs. There are alot of consultancies but not all of them are nice! thats upto you on what to choose and where.

I have mailed you the advantages on consultancies, but there are disadvantages too. like you would have to lie alot!! -- these are desi consultants, i dont know about how american works, but they probably dont take anyone on OPTS and stuffs. Well you dont have STEM extensions so you need a sponor to get your H1B done and most of the entry level jobs dont offer sponsorships..

Regards,
Mercy

Hello,

Usually I don't say much in these discussion forums now and when I see suggestions that just don't feel right, I like to speak my mind.

Quicksler, what I'm going to say next may change your life or you may read it and forget in two minutes. You may feel bad reading my comments and you may come back with a very witty response. It's your choice.

I know the nay sayers are going to flood this thread with, "you don’t' know how bad the economy is" or "it's so hard to find a job without lying" and I don't blame these people. They couldn't get a job fresh out of college the traditional way so they will tell you that the only way to get a job is to join the "I have 5 years of irrelevance" herd.

If they can't get a job fresh out of college then it has nothing to do with you. You have the power to shape your life with your mind. Use your head. Nothing is impossible. What you should be looking to is how you can get the job with the skills and experience you currently have. You will be a lot happier and being honest then trying to cover something up.

You may get a job by lying but I bet the job won't make you any happy. You will be an under skilled employee paced in a demanding role soon to be displaced or in a role where you simply push buttons in the application all day and call it a day’s work. Man that's no way to live.

You spent so much time of your life and money in school. Try to make some use of what you learned. You will feel much prouder if you can achieve your goals the ethical way. Be confident. Be bold. Go grab what's yours.

Since you are Computer Science Graduate, you will get STEM extension (confirm with your school about extension). You will get another 17 months.

I would NOT suggest going to DESI at least for now. There are lot's of entry level/ Intern job in computer science ( Depends where you  located). If the job requires 1-3 years experience, this similar to entry level job. Don't expect good pay. If you qualify for STEM extension, then at least for 2 years you don't have have to worry about H1B. Furhter you will also get CAP GAP extension( this is for later.)

If you get interview, and your company asks whether you need sponsorship or not? Tell them you don't need it. Also tell them you got work permit for 2 years and your green card is in process through your family. Switch your job after 6-12 months.

Send your resume to your friends and family for critics. 2 out of 20 will reply your with feedback. This is how it is. Make sure to send individual email. DON"T CC email. Send me your resume at mukurdhom@gmailDOTcom.

Keep looking

Agree with the last two posts. Incandescent, that's what I recommend to the most. If for months you still don't get anything, you might have to resort the the "other" option; but don't fake it so much that you can't handle it. Not worth it.

Just because of this consultants, the fresh graduates are not getting any chance of getting job in this IT field. Any company will hire the experienced ones rather than the freshers. These dhotis are making tougher in IT field. This is why, no matter how many positions you apply for you won't get a job in this IT field. For suggestion, try haunting jobs as much as you can, apply 10-20 jobs a day. If you do this for 2-3 months, you will sure be called by some companies. Don't give up, and don't be lazy to apply for the jobs. If still nothing comes up, then go for the consultants, by the end of the 3rd month. You should be good. But don't take your chance, you have spent may be 4 yrs of your valuable life to study in your own field, don't just quit that major, try hard even harder, and still if unable to find any jobs, then make consultancies as your 2nd option.

Thank you all for your valuable suggestions. I think i will search for a job on my own for the first year of my OPT.  May be during the extension period, if needed, I would contact those desi consultancies. Once again thanks for your valuable input.

yeah, but I don't think it's a good idea to spend the whole year searching for a job. I think you have report your school in 3 months. And hey DON'T BE LAZY SEARCHING FOR A JOB. Like I said, try to apply for 10-20 positions everyday. Atleast you will feel like you tried.
