This is a question to computer geeks -

Which is tougher to learn given you have limited amount of time?

Would appreciate if you could elaborate 'interest'.

But I am interested in learning both to get a job and to strengthen my GIS skills. The latter is mainly built on these languages including Python, C++, Java. But learned computer scholars told me if I learn these two, the others are just babies, is that true??

as for me, i hate coding. though working with database does involve some coding like t-sql, i like to analizing data and working with reports etc etc.I feel I can improve productivity of a company so much if i can correctly analyze the data. hence i like working with databases. thats just me though.

some people like developing web apps they would like .net. but it doesnt interest me.

Did plenty of data analyzing and writing reports but not using coding - I like to learn this too.

Say, I am highly interested in .net - is it really tough to learn in a short period of time? My advisor says SQL do not require much of a programming..

Thanks.

G

Guru91,

The more specific you can be about where it is you see yourself working, the better advice that people can give you. What kind of work do you see yourself doing?
If you want to be a business analyst, then your level of .net and SQL server can be relatively high level. If you want to do technical production support work, your knowledge of .net will need to be more involved.
And if you want to be a developer, then you will really need to pull up your sleaves and digest .net and sql server. This will take time and commitment and you have to pretty much immerse yourself in the details day and night.

So before you ask 'how difficult it is' to learn .net and sql server, tell us about the degree of depth in which you want to immerse yourself in either. What is the role you want to apply these skills?

I have been doing .NET and SQL Server for last 10 years. I barely know 50 % of it. You do the math now.

A very generic answer would be SQL Server would be easier to learn.

Its all abt ur interest and ability to learn.. Im MCTS in SQL server dev. But never worked on that.. I have done most of the .NET (basics only) and worked in ASP.NET + SQL for 1 yr. Finally i m working in java for past 1 yr.

What I mean to say is that technology is very vast and ur interest keeps on changing.. And of course more time == more knowlwdge.
Decide based on ur potential.
