Dear friends,

I am currently insured with Nationwide. I took online quote and paying 158 per month (Full coverage for 08 Camry, I am 21 and do have a violation for improper lane change). That was the best quote I found. Well, I had another old car before and I sold that and 3 months later I bought 08 Camry. So I have 3 months gap in insurance.
Now, nationwide is asking me to provide continuous coverage in any car for at least six months, otherwise I have to pay 400 extra. but I don't have. Is there any way to save 400 bucks,

Thank you in advance for your valuable suggestions.

Try and call Geico. If they if you are currently insured, just say yes. Tell them you are currently insured with nationwide. When I last got my insurance with Geico, after a gap of almost a year. I told them that I am currently insured with AIG. Then never asked me for any proof of previous insurance. Give it a try and see if it works for you.

Thanks and hope this helps!!

You don't need to have continuous coverage with a reason. For instance, if you were out of country or didn't have a car, they shouldn't require you the proof. If you were doing it online and got the message to send them proof of continuous coverage, you may want to give a call to the customer service. If you did talk to the insurance agent or the customer service, you may have to speak little louder and tell them, "I didn't have the car during those three months. I can provide you insurance info before that period."

Try Progressive,

They have started the My rate program. They will give you a device that will record your driving habits, i.e, time, distance and duration you drive each day plus your hard brake/acceleration. If you are a good driver and feel that you can score low on these measures, it might be the one for you. You get discount your next term if your driving habit is less risky. This is a new PAY as you drive insurance concept.

Regarding prior insurance-You would be legally considered without prior insurance even if you did not own a vehicle. You could get a cheap COMP only coverage if you intend to be without a vehicle for a short period of time so that you are still considered having prior insurance when you get your vehicle.

However, most insurance companies only ask for the Dec page as proof of prior. If you had cancelled your policy when you got rid of your old vehicle but the effective date for the policy is within the time you got your new one, you can still show it as a proof prior. They do not check with the existing insurance company to validate your policy.

Whether Progressive gives a better rate than Geico depends on an individual. I'm paying 100 bucks for my newest vehicle.

Try calling Nationwide yourself. They will work with you.

I tried GEICO, Progressive, All State, State Farm and Liberty Mutual. All are more expensive.

Thank you all for the replies.
