Haiti earthquake is a grave reminder for all of us.  Nepal lies in highly seismic zone.  We won't be able to deal with such earthquake based on our current  infrastructure.  The rampant growth of unsafe houses, limited heavy equipments, inadequate emergency responders can create a havoc similar to Haiti.  I am praying that we won't have to deal with such natural catastrophic event.  Given our lack of preparation, Kathmandu is cited as the most vulnerable city in the world.  I am hoping that our government is serious about this.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake has wreaked havoc on Haiti and its capital Port-au-Prince, with estimates of thousands of people killed. Citing a study by nonprofit research group GeoHazards International (GI), U.S. business magazine Forbes on Wednesday published a list of the 20 cities around the world that are most vulnerable to earthquakes.

Kathmandu, Nepal, topped the list. GI researchers predicted in the 2001 study around 69,000 of the city's one million inhabitants would die if a 6.0-magnitude quake struck the city. Also on the list were Istanbul, Turkey; Delhi, India; Quito, Ecuador; Manila, Philippines; and Islambad/Rawalpindi, Pakistan, all of which could expect tens of thousands of deaths in a large earthquake

We, Nepali people, will never learn from the experiences and we will never listen to the people who are expert in their field. We think we are the smartest people and we know everything in others' field while we don't know many things in our own field.

That was the first thing crossed my mind when I heard about Haiti. God forbid, if something like this happens , I can't imagine the devastation. Even the thought of it sends chills down my spine.
