Guys I wish we could have a genuine positive and progressive discussion.

We all see us complaining about dire situation in Nepal. We complain about Nepal Bandhs, corrupt leaders and ever stagnant development of our country. We see people saying so easily..IF U R SO PISSED THEN WHY DON'T U URSELF GO TO NEPAL?.

This time it's just one issue..CORRUPTION.

Corruption is in our society, a well respected vice. In Nepal people gain respect by their bank balance and power, by the number of storeys they have added to their building, no one cares how the money has been earned. One who is honest is doomed. One way to justify stealing is if someone else steals then why not me?? As the only thing u could ever learn from others is just that. In most of the cases ur relatives complain..TAPAIN THE KASTO KAAM NALAAGNE..FALANO LE YETI KAMAYO? do u even know how?

The politicians don't come from Mars. They are born and raised in our society. If our society is like this then how the hell can we expect them to be honest? how can we expect them to fight for issues and not their bank balance? Coz WE R LIKE THAT. AGREE OR NOT, that's the bitter truth. We encourage people to earn more by any means. Then for that we have to give concessions to bad  guys. A job in BHANSAAR is high profile job..coz lot of # 2 money u know? and then we expect the politicians TO BE HONEST? GIVE ME A BREAK. Even here in Saajha, I see threads like chornu ramro ki naramro? well it's easily debatable topic whether stealing is good just bcoz our boss steals. What a shame.

Why our country can't produce one honest leader? We  don't need to go too far. In India u have Bajpayee or Manmohan Singh or Abdul Kalaam Azaad. Now don't say I am Indian agent.GET A LIFE IF ANYONE THINKS SO.  I am talking about corruption here. None of those people can be called corrupt by even their strongest critics. Doesn't mean India doesn't have corrupt people but at least their culture has produced heroes like Gandhi.

Pakistam has Imran Khan. A world cup winning extremely charismatic captain who chose to stay in the country to fight for democracy. Noone can say he is corrupt.

Why can't we produce one leader , JUST ONE who is not corrupt. Reason is our society..it promotes and glorifies corruption.

CAN'T WE HAVE A SOCIETY WHERE WE TEACH OUR CHILDREN IT'S WRONG TO STEAL. IT'S WRONG TO EARN MONEY BY COMPROMISING ON YOUR ETHICS. IT'S WRONG TO BE DISHONEST. AND ITS UNPATRIOTIC AND UNHUMAN TO BE CORRUPT.

Let's have an honest discussion here. I pose this issue as a challenge to all u genuine patriotic Nepalese. RISE OVER THE PETTY ISSUES LIKE ...CAN U EVEN NAME IT ?..AND TALK ABOUT PRODUCING A BETTER SOCIETY SO THAT THEN WE CAN HAVE GOOD LEADERS WHO COULD FIGHT FOR OUR COUNTRY'S BETTER FUTURE AND OUR AND OUR CHILDREN'S.

Hi Prabhat, Maddogg, I see that the conversation is not leading us anywhere. Seriously, let's identify our first task and take the necessary steps to work on it. For your info, I'll be in Nepal from Sept 20 for one month. Can we plan to execute something by that time?

We know that knowledge is power. Shall we draw up a plan to identify a group of children and work something on a longterm basis with them?

Let's put our talk into action because nothing beats that.

Hearbeat,

do u have any plans as what should be the first task ? I will be glad to participate and contribute with all my capacity. Coz my plans are very long term. My dreams might take generations to fulfil which is a society with no discrimination.

But as far as the short term tasks go, Plz let me know and dare I say, It will be a previlege to be a part of that.

Thanks

Guys,

I couldn't go through all the posts in this thread, but scanning through a few was enough for me to join hands for this great cause. As Prabhat said, it might take generations to fulfill the dreams, its not too late to act on it either.

IMO corruption is the root cause of all the problems we are facing in Nepal. I am willing to do everything that is in my reach to eradicate this disease from our society. I know it is not an easy task, but hey.. somebody should put that first step forward. Please count me in on this mission.

Norton

Though I am more intersted in taking profitable business to nepal I am willing to start a social non profit cause too SO That is excellent Idea heartbeat. Lets start and see If we can open one school in an area where there is much education needed......Do the research when you are there in nepal...How much it costs for the land. The location, how many will benifit, monthly budget, books etc.......We will fund the school from here with what ever we can by forming a small comittee of donars and helpers. We will try to donate all we can without any foreign help JUST NEPALESE HELPERS,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Every thing FREE for the students and Parents ..we will pay for the school and teachers and all costs. DO the research and come back with all the details and connections required. Then we will meet and form this commmitte and start the GOOD work...how is that for an action?????..............But also keep an eye in profitable business ideas in Nepal will you so we can support our social programmes better. Regulate local cash flow in to good cause.....I mean taking form the rich by providing good luxury service and helping poor with the profit .

Dear Prabhat, MadDogg, Norton and all other friends, thank you for your support. I know this venture will snowball into an avalanche. I would really like to start working on something serious for the children. But I feel the sahja forum has its limitations. So, if any of you are serious about this, then contact me at p2ladhar@yahoo.com. Then we can discuss, plan and strategize more effectively on the details.

There's a old song lyric that says "Reach out and touch somebody's hands, make this world a better place, if you can."

Singhsanta, there are alot of words I would like to use with regards to your posting. They say "a picture speaks a thousand words"....the choice of your picture just reflects your upbringing. Do you know what is the law against porn? If this is your style, please stay out of sahja because it reflects badly on the rest of sahja members and especially on the admin. Sahja is accessed by people of all ages from all countries. By posting such a picture you have violated basic human rights to a decent relationship.

Because this world is filled with spineless people like you, you think what you did was to be applauded. Your actions have hurt people's feelings and you definitely have no respect for others.

AS FOR SAJHA, IT'S DISAPPOINTING TO SEE THAT THE ADMIN HAS NO CONTROL OVER WHAT IS POSTED. PERHAPS SAJHA NEEDS TO REVAMP THEIR ADMINISTRATORS. LIFE WITHOUT CONTROL IS NO LIFE AT ALL.

I FEEL SORRY FOR ALL THE WOMEN IN YOUR LIFE. ONE DAY WHEN YOU HAVE A DAUGHTER YOU WILL REMEMBER THIS BAR GIRL.

haria bro,

was gone for a while. just saw ur response and thought i should clarify ur comments about suckling poor nepali.

when u say poor nepali, aren't u poor like the rest of us? we have huge international debt and every child born in Nepal has pre debt. or u don't know that Nepal is one of the least developed and one of the poorest nation in the world and we rank 13.

FYI, we use resources of US to work in Nepal and we are not affliated with any NGOs.

if u have any more Q, bring it on. i will be glad to answer them.

I propose a solution. This is not my solution. This solution will in the long run help create a free and open society. For this solution we need a constitution that has strong checks and balances built in. So that no one person can be above the law. The executive and the legislative branches of the government will have equal powers.
More importantly, and business investment, foreign aid, government spending and investment will be transperant. There should be a independent body, with no ties to any one perticular party, who will regulate and over see the monetary transactions and hold people responsible, with concrete proof when they commit fraud.
It is true that the socity as come to accept corruption as a part of life in nepal. But in the past one year, there has been unpresedented changes in our political system. We are writing a new consitution!
It does not matter who is in the government, it is very important that we have good laws.

First, please watch this talk by Paul Collier.
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/paul_collier_shares_4_ways_to_help_the_bottom_billion.html

Many experts have looked into the problem facing developing countries.

When we think about Nepal, we have to put this in context.
It it imperative that we have a government (constitution) in place. There needs to be a framework and system is there that promotes transparency and accountability for solving our corruption and other problems. This is in my opinion, among many other, one of the most important step to lift Nepal out of poverty.

So what do I mean when I say transparency and accountability.
There are already international bodies that have set up basic guide lines for transparency in Governments and NGO.

Say if there are companies willing to invest in a hydropower project. In that situation, we need a open auction system. In this system, it is good for Nepal as we will get most money out of it. Also we will know who is bidding, and how much they are bidding. Their proposal will also be publicly accessible and we can print that in National daily newspaper.
Then once the project start, all the cost and spending should be tracked in a transparent manner.

There are millions of people in Nepal who live on less than a $1 per day.
But unlike in the past, now you know how much was given to foreign aid. You know how much you town was supposed to get in funds. Now that you can track the money, you can discourace people from out right corruption.

Media and the public will have a key role to play.
We can the public can pressure the government to hold those person responsible for swindling public and private funds.

Also it is important that those giving Aids only give the funds if and only if the money trail is made public.

This is the solution to corruption in Nepal. Its not the society that is the problem. Its not the leaders that are inherently corrupt. Its the closed system that provides opportunity to blatent corruption.
It is critical that regulatiory bodies not be part of a political system. Nepal has been unstable because everytime the government changes, they appoint their own people in the public institution. This is an open invitition to corruption.
Our constitution will live much longer than all of us. It is important now to make sure that it is fair and just. That is it makes our government system open and transparent. In a transparant system, it is easier to persicute people who commit crimes. More importantly, it will also discourage corruption.

---
sorry for the long post and repeated ideas. But hope I got my ideas across.
We can refine the idea to nepalese contest and spread word.

I FEEL LIKE AN ASS TO HAVE STARTED THIS THREAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, Corruption....good topic that I chose.

Alright the political leaders that we chose to curse every single moment ARE WAY OLDER THAN MOST OF US. You will say..old ? what the hell has corruption to do with being old ?..patience friends..I'm coming to the exact point. We chose to curse the public servants coz they r corrupt and they take bribes. We curse the system in Nepal coz it's corrupt. We curse everything in Nepal coz there is corruption.

Wait a minute...who r we ? FUTURE OF NEPAL ????? THE YOUNGER GENERATION. MUCH MUCH YOUNGER THAN THOSE CORRUPT LEADERS. WE R PURSUING HIGHER EDUCATION IN USA, AUSTRALIA AND SO ON. We r someone who can set examples for others to follow....?????

So how better are most of us ? Can these political leaders and public servant look at us and say..wow..we are so wrong..let's learn from these Nepali kids in America who work in Gas stations and restaurants and so on..Can we ? Can they?

  • CAN WE STOP THINKING IT'S COOL TO STEAL FROM OUR WORK PLACE JUST BCOZ OUR BOSS STEALS TAXES....coz there is nothing else better to learn in the world..
  • CAN WE STOP DOING " JHYAAP" , that is, an accepted terminology for stealing money and cigarretes and other goods from our work places ( mostly Gas stations )..and talking about as if we have achieved a thing of such significance.  Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Can we stop stealing from our work places just bcoz  it's like taking a glass of water out of the ocean.
  • Can we be ethical for a day..for a minute..for a second..NO WE CAN'T ? COZ THAT'S OUR TRUE COLOUR. COZ THAT'S WE..THAT'S WHAT WE FEEL PROUD OF DOING EVEN WHEN WE R IN USA..

Then who on earth gives us right to curse these corrupt politicians!!!!!!!

Who the hell gives us right to suggest one word of wisdom to these people in Nepal!!!!!!

Are they less corrupt than us ? If we can steal here...why the hell won't they steal ?THEY R ONE OF US. THEY R US. THEY WILL DO WHAT WE DO IN OUR DAY TO DAY LIFE.

The reason is .....corruption and corrupt attitude is a disease that has plagued our life style..we blame others..but we r even more corrupt..we refuse to look within ourselves..There is nothing like introspection.

So I say..I m quite disturbed to see our Nepalese friends stealing money and other stuff from their work place and feeling so proud and so cool about it.  There was a time when Nepalese were synonymous with honesty and integrity. Can we say that again  ????

Until we ( the so called foreign educated people ) stop doing these SEEMINGLY GREAT DEEDS  LIKE STEALING AND YET FEELING AWESOME ABOUT IT...THE LAST THING I WILL TALK IS ABOUT CORRUPTION.

I ..AGAIN..FEEL SO FREAKING STUPID TO HAVE RAISED THIS TOPIC.

To hell with corruption...I don't even wanna talk about it anymore in my lifetime.

Jai Nepal

Corruption (stealing) will always be there. But with a strong system, we can minimize the scale and discourage blatant corruption.

There are thousands of nepalese abroad....just for jest say
100,000 nepalese live abroad, of that 1% work in gas station = 1000
of that 1% steal = 10

those 10 people dont represent the rest of us.

just an example, i am sure my numbers are all wrong but you get my point.

Sedif sir,

your point is valid. But what only a strong system can do when we have DEFICIT OF EMPATHY, VALUES, ETHICS, HONESTY, AND INTEGRITY.

These things are embedded in our culture..a sad but true fact.

You sound down brother, maybe because its a Monday.

It seems like you have your heart at the right place. And I suppose the situation is grim like you mention.
But most of us, I am sure, while growing up we learn about our Hindu myth and the life of Buddha (I speak from my background, but I am sure other religion and culture in Nepal have this in common).
Being kind, honest, compassionate, loving, etc was was always a virtue we looked highly upon.

Reality is obviously different.

I DO NOT put the blame on the individual or the society though. I put the blame on the system.
Especially the monarch system, where all the people who served the King did very well. Then all the people who served the people who served the king did well.
It didn't change much with the political parties taking over, as the System did NOT change much.

There is so much we need to do. And on the top of the list I put
Responsible/Transparant governance (public and private).

To summarize:
If you have a great system, a good person can do great as a leader.
if you have a bad system, a great leader will not be able to do much good.
lets first make a good system, God willing, one day we will fine a good leader.

Sedif brother,

I am not down, neither I am pessimistic. If you have some time I would like to sincerely request u to go through this thread and see my posts.

I , to the best of my assessment, am one of the most positive persons u can ever meet. But that won't stop me from being practical. Well u got to call spade a spade.

But I would hardly believe if anyone says we don't have deficit of the aspects of life I mentioned above. Well I was so disturbed to see some of the people I know boasting about how they stole things from their work place..supposedly Master's students. And then they complain about leaders being corrupt..ironical !!!

Well I am as imperfect as I can be, but I want to put an end to this discussion at least from my side. So no more comments from me on this topic from here on.

ok I will tell you one story, I was a civil servant for 6 months and I was posted to mahottari, I am young and wary about corruption, I went  to my office met CDO I have to open a NEw office UNDER District adminitration office , as i went for my appointment the Khardar who was too law in ranking as compared to mine tried to linger until I pulled everything by force and made him ashmed, listen I also was a civilservant umn high ranked . The next day I reached office at 9.45 noone was there except sober and sincere ,poor madhesi folks in Dhoti kurta they were staring me at pure pahadiya young man  and one old folk asked r u from Bardibas ,( where there are lots of pahadiyas) at around 10.15 am a young man with pan and red lips went like a bull in front of meopened his office abs started registering folks taking money he used to put in his forehead followed by his pocket , I was staring and he yelled at me becoz I was new he didnot know me.Both of these guys I met were madhesi" If I don't state this you will say ,Bahun and pahadiya or something else". I went out MY register was on Another room I had to wait till 10.35 am and I went to the room when another Hakim came I grabbed his register , he was really afraid as he suspected me from headquarters or someone for inspection, I had no right to put red marks but I made entry of 10.45 am. I was outside the building thinking of this scenario and thinking a lot.The same day I quit my job and came back to KTM and US after 6 months. While I was in the way of preparation of all this I met a colleague who has bought two buildings in a single year from a Job that was one rank below me posed and said this Phd ,Chd is nothing you should have better continued your job. I had no words to say I just smiled. Look guys I have touched corruption by heart and seen ppl posing their property earned by corruption and know bureaueurocracy are corrupt and needs to bring revolution ,But I dunno how?????? Good luck!! at least we are thinking Good in this whole hysterical Corrupt Society. Led bycorrupt government ! I can say Each and Ever NEpali Is corrupt by birth!! As Society is whole corrupt.

since u been upset with my comments on indians being smarter, it shows u don't have the guts to face the facts. so ignore my comments.

read my comments on the other thread and i think every human being has right to emmigrate and immigrate for a better life. but no matter where we are we can always work for Nepal's betterment.

With great pleasure..I need to state that the idea behind working on this thread has been fulfilled.

When I started this thread , I was brand new to sajha..but I wanted to join hands with people who can put the ethnic differences, caste , cultural, communal and religious differences aside..who r there to accomodate others and be respectful and patient..and work for the greater cause..which is needless to say for Nepalese and Nepal..and above all humanity.

I am extremely pleased to say that I have found those kind of people here. Before I started this thread I hardly knew this was gonna happen..but now I know we Nepalese..if not all of us..but most of us..can make a difference.

This is the formal closure of this thread as I NOW HAVE ACHIEVED A COALITION OF SUCH FRIENDS FROM SAJHA.

Thanks sajha and thank u all who participated.

God bless u all.
