Dude, the image you are seeing happened millions of years before. It just that the light took so many years to reach our hubble telescope. Also, the smaller one will completely merge into the bigger one in next billions of years. The exciting thing, is even the two galaxies collide, the objects (stars and gases) inside galaxies rarely collide because they are thousands of light years away from each other.

These galaxies are in average 50 millions light years away and that is also seen in only 1 degree wide view in the sky. Billions and billions stars 100s of times greater than sun in those galaxies. Its insane to claim that we are alone in this universe. There may be millions of earth like objects in the universe spanning millions and billions light years away. Will we ever come in contact with them?
