Hey guys,

I have been thinking of doing Master's in biomedical engineering, but I am a bit concerned about job opportunities in this field, since it's not so broad field. If you guys have good knowledge in this field, please share.

Thanks in advance,

Cheers,

I have been doing masters in this field since the last year and aiming for PhD. In this field you must have PhD and some post-doc experience for job.

From a number of seminars I have been to, I get the impression that the market (investment and jobs) is down currently in this field because of many failures and hype. But it is expected that as there are more and more senior citizens in the world the demand is going to increase probably after 10 years.

I think it is not an entirely good idea to come to the field just because of the jobs. The field is one of the new frontiers in science where we can combine many different expertees to make some novel discoveries, which might be helpful to human health. The job market just fluctuates and one never knows where one can create a niche for oneself.

Beware that Biomedical departments are mostly just getting established (at least in my university) and the funding level might not be as high as that in some other traditional departments. But it depends on the particular university. In most places, the biomedical has less funding than more general fields, I gather (unless you are in MIT or such).

Also if you really want to do HOT science, you should get to biomedical in a well known (say top 50) university so that you have access to all the equipment needed.

My suggestion would be, if you are from computer science or mechanical engineering or such, just join a regular MS in CS or ME in a university where there is a biomedical program and then take courses from the biomed. brach so that you have the option to switch for your PhD. That way you have a flexible plan.

Hey guys
what about the prospects of Biology. Do you know how easy it is to find a job with a masters in Biology? I am also concerned about job opportunities.

if you want to do biomedical enginnering and at the same time want to get good jobs then i see only three colleges that is good for it...john hopkins, duke and MIT, It will be pretty difficult finding jobs if you graduate from other colleges unless you have some PHD degree..so think on that

sands,
If I was you I will go with Microbiology rather than Biology. Microbiology have tons of jobs after you graduate. Its just my opinion at the same time its not me who is going to offer you the job anyway

Good LUCK

Well, animal cellular biotechnology is of great interest to US universities these days. I have not much idea about the job prospectives though.
