Resign Balen!

It's sad to read about a young man setting himself on fire to protest the Nagar Prahari's action regarding traffic violations. But it is also sad to see our opposition wallahs and old school media houses blaring their horns, asking for the resignation of PM Balen for this unfortunate incident.

I think what we can learn from this incident is that we need to work more on improving our support system for mental health, and the government should divert some of its energy to the well-being of its citizens.

Yes, most of us in this land are frustrated with limited job opportunities, and even if we are lucky to get a job, it is very difficult to sustain oneself because most of us, in the businesses, be it the big business houses or the small ones, do not pay the minimum wage, which is around Rs 20,000 now!

The young lad was not happy with the KMC Police's action. What he did then was very drastic and ended up taking his own life. I think our police personnel and even we citizens must take a crash course on CPR, emergency first aid, and also what to do when someone is on fire.

First of all, why did some of us not take control of the situation when the young man was pouring petrol on his body? There were our KMC Police and the public watching the scene. After he lit himself up, somebody could have minimized the risk to this young man's life by maybe finding a blanket to douse the fire or doing something instead of our police personnel trying to walk him to get the needed medical treatment.

Some of us blame the Balen government for a young soul lost. Some of us blame the young man for not following the traffic rules inside the city and taking such measures to prove a point. The Home Minister did his best, even arranging flights to airlift the man to Delhi for further treatment, but his condition was already worse.

To ask for the resignation of the PM for such incidents seems more like another political stunt by those not in power. The KMC acting Mayor, our baini Sunita Dangol, is mum on the whole incident. I guess those protesting against the government and blaming the PM for the death of this young man seem to have a soft corner for our old political parties.

Our police personnel must be better trained to handle such incidents. We, the public, should follow the traffic laws in place. But at the end of the day, we should work together to build a support system for all of us, mostly those who are struggling with many issues, which could lead them to take their own lives.

Yes, it's hard here in Nepal. No wonder we have 5 million folks abroad sending in more than 12 billion dollars a year to feed their loved ones and provide a better life for them all. We cannot blame the government for all the mess in this land, but this government can learn a lesson from this incident and work towards making mental health a number one priority, and also providing training to our security personnel on professionally dealing with the public, and also training them in first aid skills as well.

And those who are on the streets, jumping up and down, asking for the resignation of the Prime Minister, please calm down! It has only been a hundred days, and you want to do away with a government elected by the majority of the Nepali folks!

Please be patient, let them do their work, and in five years, you can convince the majority of the voters to vote the other way, but until then, do not try to create chaos and let the old corrupt guards who stood silent for the past two decades find some masala to blame this government for all the sins the previous ones committed!
