Who Killed Madan Bhandari?
It's been 33 years, and we still don't know who killed CPN-UML leaders Madan Bhandari and Jibaraj Ashrit back then. Dasdhunga is like our JFK moment. The driver of the vehicle, Amar Lama, was the only survivor. He later joined the Nepali Congress and started his own newspaper, but our Maoist comrades decided to shoot him in the head because he didn't want to pay the 'People's tax.
Madan Bhandari was more like Obama when it came to giving speeches. Or maybe Obama was like Bhandari. He defeated then Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattari in the 1991 elections just like Balen got rid of the comedian Oli in 2026.
But Bhandari could never become our PM because his party did not have the majority seats then. Later, Man Mohan Adhikari headed a UML minority government for barely a year with the help of the former Pancheys, but it took our communists another decade before getting to loot the country and its citizens.
The Americans do not know who killed JFK. We do not know who killed Bhandari and Ashrit. Was it RAW or CIA or the Nepali Congress or his own people from the UML? If Bhandari were alive and kicking, he would have been our PM a few times after 2008. Comrades like Jhallu Nath 'Snake Venom' or Makune and even KP Oli would not have had the opportunity to live in Baluwatar.
In my personal opinion, it could most likely be the work of his own party members instead of the ruling party, the Nepali Congress or any other foreign intelligence wallahs, because he was not a threat to foreign hands or Girija's loot!
Bidya Bhandari went on to win Bhandari's seat and even became our Minister of Defence and later our first woman President. But instead of being the guardian of the nation, she favored Oli and the UML during her Presidency by breaking the rules of the House to keep Oli in power.
And now, our former President, Bidya Didi is once again back to the 'political' game by getting her UML membership renewed. If she wants to become a UML cadre again then she should also return her security, vehicles and perks and pensions that come as part of the package for being a former President of this country.
Our former Presidents receive Rs 50,000 monthly allowance and Rs 200,000 monthly for house rent, and half of it if they reside in their own property. They get a dedicated security detail and 200+ liters of petrol, and a government vehicle to drive around Kathmandu. They also get tons of support staff, and their salaries are paid by the government.
While Bidya Bhandari became the Queen of UML, the widow of Jibaraj Ashrit suffered a lot. She lived in poverty, couldn't afford even necessities and the UML did not care for her. Communists do not seem to care for their own fallen comrades or their families. Bidya was an exception because she was the widow of Madan Bhandari. The UML has been in the game largely because of Bhandari's speeches from the 1990s.
The UML has been part of the government numerous times during the past two decades but they never really carried out any investigation into the deaths of Bhandari and Ashrit. Even Bidya Bhandari didn't care much about her late husband. But today, she tells us that the newbies in town are a threat to democracy while she forgets that she wanted to make Oli a dictator while she was the President and failed miserably.
The old political parties must understand that their time is up and they should leave the building or hand over the leadership to the next generation, well, to Gen Y comrades rather than the likes of Yogesh Bhattarai and Ram Kumari Jhakri, because Gen X politicians are now considered too old to lead this country. And they can only blame the Baby Boomers for screwing it up and not handing over the leadership and they can blame themselves for not demanding the change when it was necessary.
