End of Educational Consultancies?
Our political experts and jholey patrakars seem to think that our Balen government is a threat to Loktantra. I say not, our government is a threat to loot-tantra and most of us are happy with the way the country is moving forward instead of the same old hawa-taari speeches and free lunches for jholeys during the golden days of Mafia Raj!
Today, we will talk about our great educational consultancies. While manpower companies extort a few lakhs from our folks when the cost is a meager 10,000 Rupees and free visas and tickets, our so-called education wallahs seem to extort more from our students who dream of going abroad for further studies.
Our edu folks seem to be worse than manpower agencies. They get commissions from the schools and also charge extra for processing fees and all other nataks. They think they are doing us a favor but if our students in this day and age of digital transformation took their time to fill out the application forms themselves and communicate with their dream schools, they would save a few lakhs of their parents' hard-earned money.
If you go back to the early 90s, we did not have so-called educational consultancies. It was mostly the snail mail thing and not emails. Most of the students either applied for scholarships or wrote to the schools and received the forms via the Post Office and applied themselves instead of being lazy and letting someone do their job for them.
Our Nepal Police has arrested 69 education consultancy operators. Most of them did not even have a license to operate their businesses. I think we have to be strict on this. It is not only they but any business, be it small, big, mini or macro, should have a license and should be held accountable for any illegal nataks.
Our municipalities could generate tons of revenue if every local chiya pasal, the cycle wallah vendors who sell panipuri or buy kawadi from us had to register with the local authorities and pay an annual renewal fee and maybe work out some tax bracket for their annual revenue or self-declared income. If they don't comply, then the fines should be heavy, not a few hundred like we do with our traffic fines and 100 days of cleaning up the Bagmati river if you are in Kathmandu or digging ditches if you are in Dharan.
If you look at the FB pages of many of our education consultancy wallahs, they are living the good life as if they are in Beverly Hills. Foreign vacations, SUVs and all the fun are funded by extorting the parents of those students who want to pursue further studies abroad.
It is not easy for our students because many of the education consultancies tie up with either fake schools or schools that do not even get students from their own lands. Many of our students do need to find part-time jobs and rooms and they struggle mentally once they are there. And most of our parents have no choice but to sell their gold, land or get loans from meter byazis to fund their kids' education overseas.
We spend a US$ 1 billion a year sending our kids abroad for their further studies. We cannot stop them from leaving because we all have the right to study here or wherever we want. But the recent crackdown on these mafia education consultancies is a good sign that this government is not only going after poitical jholeys and judges but also going after the mafia byaparis, be it our manpower, transport, medical, education and more.
This is not the end of democracy. This is the beginning of the end of Mafia Raj in our land. Most of us do not think Balen is a dictator or wants to be one. If you look at Prachanda, Oli and Deuba then you realize that for many decades, these three stooges were dictators for their own parties and slept with each other to make sure the country remained poor while the citizens were forced to go abroad for employment and educational opportunities!
