Say my F1 visa expires next month. Does being on TPS mean being "out of status" but protected from deportation?
Or is it an immigration status in itself?

Would appreciate any comments from legal experts out here.

Tps is a temporary blanket. It "protects" you "temporarily". It is like a cushion which allows you to switch your status by keeping your legality intact. Tps is also a status. It's best to maintain your student status paralellely with tps. It is not an immigration status. This is tps 101.

TPS is a legally authorized stay. It is not an immigration status per se, but it is not "out of status." Just that once it's terminated, you have to return to your home country if you haven't made an arrangement to switch status (via green card sponsorship by employer, US citizen spouse, etc.)

As far as I know, you should be able to change to any status from TPS provided that you comply with all the requirement for that status. For eg. If you want to change into F1, you should get an acceptance letter along with other documents like i20. If you want to change to H1B, you need all the documents required for H1B.
