Hi Sajhaites,

I'm have been currently employed in a genuine STEM job for a nice company the past 6 months at an entry level position on H1-B. Now, I only have a Bachelors degree and I've been hearing things about the immigration reform that going to basically grant STEM Master's degree holders a green card. So Im in a dilemma whether I should continue working or go to graduate school next year. What are your opinions on this?

Thanks!

This green card thing for the STEM people always floats around the Congress and does not happen for real. There is certainly immigration reform going to happen within a year but that targets mostly the illegal immigrants rather than people with legal status. It's good to hear the you got nice job with the bachelor's degree. However with that degree, you will always be working as junior to many people. Hence, if I were in your shoes, I would continue to work with the present company for about 1-2 year and go to the graduate school thereafter. This way you will save some money and will  gather the experience for the graduate studies also.
Goodluck

@bbmb I have some work experience already. I will have 2 yrs of good work experience by the end of this year.. Thats why I'm confident that I'll find a job after the masters degree - specially with green card in hand. I have been turned away from interviews just because they wouldn't want to sponsor H1s. But you're right it has been floating for a long time. But this time I'm hopeful since both parties are working together to come up with a bill. Lets see how it goes. I'm planning to make my move only after the bill is passed, if I do.

well mr. hkrishna, i am not sure how closely you are looking in to that bill which is still not in the sight, but i have no hope until the bill is passed. i am not pessimistic but i have been reading all the things about congress. you never know until last hour. bill ma bhar parera padhne ya napadhne bhannu chai ali dumbness nai huncha jasto lagcha. no offense plz. Even if the bill gets passed, it will take minimum couple of years to be law, by that time you should be able to get the master degree also.
as jhapaliketo mentioned, isn't your company willing to sponsor you for GC?

Find a cheap university and start doing ms side by side. You won't loose anything and might help u in GC. But don't spend too much money on it.

If you can tell what you major is, then you will get some specific advice.

As someone had mentioned earlier, The best situation for you is to start part time grad school. If you can complete even half of the course while working you will only be left with a year. I guess since you have a job, it would also not be a financial burden. You can still finish in about 2 to 2 1/2 years taking summer classes too.

Also, aim for better schools and not fall for cheap and crappy grad schools. Dont look to save money now, you will regret later. Since you have a entry level job which you must have got based on your degree, make the most out of the grad school opportunity. If your employer agrees to file your green card, then after 2,3 years you are in great shape. And maybe STEM category green card.

Let us know where u from and maybe all sajha members can help regarding colleges and options.

Don't matter if the bill gets passed or not ....if u have a masters degree and find a job that requires master's ur green card will be processed alot quicker. Also u don't have to quit your job to enroll for master's if u have a h1b that way u can still have a job and continue with ur study.

I agree to what mvc says. I dont think there will be any reform where they will hand u a green card at the graduation walk. NEPALIs are already getting gc via eb2 in few months to couple years in avg. It will oy benefit indias from long wait. But then when they are in ur line then ur line becomes longer. Plus some schools provide instate to h1bs.

Thanks for your responses guys. Thing is there are no good schools near where I live to go part time and I don't want to enroll in online college either. I live in the Northwest US and my degree is in computer science. If I keep on working without Masters, can I still apply in EB2 category?

I saw lot of suggestion saying go to good school. If your target is not academics , it hardly matters which school u went for techies.

And also I don't know how you will do grad top rank school working full time in h1b. It's gonna take long time taking one or two course. For techies school hardly matters . It's different thing if you have a dream of attending some school or you are pursuing MBA.

Don't go for online degrees. I was on same position few yrs back and I choose cheapest state university in my area, which gives instate tuition. And I still think I made right choice. But still it depends what u want out of ur life.
