Been looking up the Nepali word for Quinoa. Is it "jau"?
my fav rice replacement, don't even remember when was the last time I ate rice.. may be 7 years ago??
Quinoa is not जौ, and neither it is any of the grains they are talking about in that article, Buckwheat is फापर and Cheeno is similar to corn, but it's definitely not Quinoa. I forgot the Nepali name, but a Cheeno plant is usually taller and skinnier than a corn plant, and the grains are also smaller (about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of a corn seed).
I'm not 100% sure but Quinoa is called लट्टे in Nepali.
लट्टे and Quinoa are not same plants... लट्टे is known as Amaranth... they are similar in some resepct but the findamental difference is that Quinoa is cool weather crop while amaranth is a warm weather one....
I donot think there is a name in Nepali language for that plant.....
Most likely it is an alien crop to Nepal.
Jantare, I came to know that quinoa isn't found it Nepal. It's grown mainly in South America.
BT, how do you cook it? I'm trying to use it as a replacement for rice too.
My friend was arguing that it's kodo,, kodo ko didho sort of thing, as far as i know kodo is called millet, isn't it?
It's called "Chinu".
"Since they get rice from the World Food Program, no one wants to grow millet, barley or quinoa (locally known as chinu)."
Kodo is dhindo sort of thing re euta scientist le feri. Dhindo is a treasured 'delicacy' made out of buckwheat (faapar), millet (kodo), or corn (makai).
Thanks Rahulhcl. Chinu bhanya ta chinnu na jannu word bhayo ni ta. Tesaile thaha nabhayeko hola. Regardless, good to know.
On the same note what "Bhaang" seeds is called in English? I know you get it on Sprouts but can't think of the name. It's great for "Aalu ko Achar", way better than sesame seeds.
Mangale, it is called "Hemp Seeds"

Found some wild quinoa growing. It is known as lambsquarters or goosefoot and was harvested by the native american as far back as 2,000 years ago. It is part of the chenopium family wich is found all over the world and was also harvested in ancient Nepal.
I dont think there is any nepali word for quinoa. Last time around 2yrs ago, when i was in Nepal I looked for quinoa everywhere without any luck. Probably coz its not a grain and i doubt whether it can grow in there. One of my best substitute for rice in weekdays.
I came across a store in Bhatbhateni/Baluwatar area that sells it. A kilo was Rs. 320, I think.
I just research about Quinoa, hard to find in Nepal.. I found nothing
