Hi...wife is currently on a F1 visa. I want to check if my father-in-law who currently has a green card can sponsor for a green card for her. He will be eligible for the citizenship in a couple of years now. If he can, do you know how long will it take.
we can do it through my brother-in-law who is already a citizen but I heard it will take about 10 yrs so I want to see other options.
Thanks.

As per current bulletin, the wait time is 10 years for married sons and daughters of a US citizen (Currently processing the one from 2001). So for u, it is more 10 and couple of years since ur father in law is resident for now.

gmoney, the best thing is to try for permanent resident in canada. You will be able to apply for american paper after you get the canadian citizen. You wont have to spend money to keep yourself in F1 status all the time.  First of all, you will be legally staying in america and canada, secondly you will save few years when you do this. Just a thought.

That is the very long process.

papermoon's suggestion is great but everyone may not be eligible.

yes that is true. Everybody does not qualify, but if you are going for graduate school than you can qualify. Lot of my friends have got citizen through canada. You dont really have to move there permanently. You can still stay here. There are some good lawyers whose rating are very good for this kind of process. You will get your paper within a year. there has been some change in the law too.
