I do not understand why people blow off candles on their birthday. Light signifies knowledge, and instead of igniting it, we blow it off; it simply implies one's preferance of darkness over light.

It is just opposite of swasthani but doing something in person. I do not see wrong on it.

I agree. During the middle ages, a lot of games were played by the then scholars with an intention to dominate women, because of which the purity of the ancient teachings got tainted, and women have become mere objects today, or at least, many of us view them that way. But it is my belief that the science of our ancient teachings were by themselves pure and uplifting. The teachings of our Rishis are not to blame. It is unfortunately ourselves who have caused this. Our religion has become like today's Bagmati, very polluted. The river itself deserves no blame. There are many good things in the our scriptures, but it is unfortunate, that we have ignored them entirely.

chill. let them do whatever they want. if people blow candles or swim accross atlantic ocean on their birthday..thats their way of celebrating. sharing is caring..adapting others culture isnt that bad..but forgetting what they are is bad...let them do what they want. :)

Ignorance is Bliss!! So Enjoy you life!! (always remember when you Point a Finger at Somebody, Three fingers are Pointing back at you)!!

anyway this is what I found out,

"The lighting of candles and altar fires as a symbol of reverence toward God is part of both pagan and Christian beliefs. The smoke from the flames is believed to take wishes up to heaven. In ancient times people prayed over open fires because they believed the smoke would take their wishes up to God.' More can be found at : www.ehow.com/about_6638266_do-put-candles-birthday-cake_.html

Just like our ritual of burning dead body, Homm (Yagya) and so on ......
