Has anybody have any issues with plugging the adaptor in Nepal and making calls? I am planning to buy AllVoi service and taking adaptor to Nepal. Any issues with ISP provider in Nepal using VoIP? Thanks for sharing your info with me.

I use doorsanchar ADSL, but it works with ANY ISP that allows Skype, that means, works with all providers.

But be careful while buying, most skype phones require computer, only a few do not.

If you use Thin client ( cost around $100 in ebay) with the Magic, You dont need to turn on comptuter for 24 hrs to receive call. There is one more option for Magic jack, try Ooma which does not require to turn on computer to make and receive call. The downside of Ooma voice service is it cost around 200 to 250 dollars , however unlike in magic jack its one time fee and you can make unlimited call forever. But the biggest concern is I m not sure it will work properly in Nepal as it requires atleast 350 kpbs broadband speed , while resident broadband speed of Nepl is only 128 kbps. If you anyone is using this service in Nepal, please let me know.

you gave a lot of details and it confused me. :(

l am looking for a simple solution.

Lets try to discuss in step by step procedure for a scenario in which I have adsl and some skype phone ( confused by name too, is it a device by skype or any SIP phone) say, Belkin Skype Desktop Phone

(k garne, neema ko guide padera pass hune bani lageko, if I got a lot of details at once, it can easily confuse me)

Now next step would be getting a phone number.
As I have understood properly, we can get it by ring2skype or google voice, right?

My confusion is how do you set it up so that if we call that number it will ring on some specific destination ip.

Do we have to spefic router for it, as most of the router will have ethernet port only, does it have to have a port for telephone line ?

All routers work Connects to Ethernet RJ45 and 9V adapter (Rs 80 in
mahaboudha china market, the one that came with phone bought in US was
120V so I changed it to 220V).

Phone runs Skype only. No configuration needed. That phone has built in skype, just turn the phone on, sign in with your skype ID and password, you are now ready to make skype to skype calls (in or out). (but no phone number yet).

Forget google voice if it confuses U. Or if really interested, visit Ring2Skype's Facebook page and see the discussion (I've posted there with a the name: Sinten Bikash)

Easiest one is, integrating with Ring2skype.com:

Go to ring2skype.com

Sign up for a US number (or as many as you want from different countries/cities). While you sign up, you need to enter your skype ID (not password) and it gives a specific number for your skype ID. Whenever that number is called, that call is rings to your Skype, wherever in the world you are, for FREE. So, if you are online in skype in several locations with same ID, all locations will ring...you answer it in one of them. As your skype phone will be online in Nepal, it rings whenever that number is called. If your other family members are in another country, you can get local numbers for them from over 40 countries, and when they call that number from ring2skype.com, they all ring to YOUR skype.

If this too sounds complicated, PM me your skype ID (no password) and I will set up a US number for you. Calls to that number will ring your skype, answer there..try it...it's not that complicated.

Ring2skype does not have nepal number, it will not have it in near future because of Telecom restrictions in Nepal. VOIP is still a "taboo" there.

Most of us here are talking about keeping "skype phone" in Nepal and calling it from US.

So, you call a US number given by ring2skype, and that call terminates in the "skype phone" in Nepal. This is what I am doing. Similarly, my brother in UK calls a UK number and that too terminates in "skype phone" in my home in Nepal. I have nobody in other 40 countries, but you can get numbers for those countries too.

I am planning to sign up for unlimited US and Canada calls offered by Skype for $2.95 per month and give my username and password to my family in nepal. I am thinking that then they will be able to call me on my cell phone using skype. Is this going to work? Is there a better option?

That's a good idea for just about $36 per year. But your family in Nepal has to keep proper track of load shedding schedule, turn the computer on as soon as the electricity resumes and call you. $36 a year may be dirt cheap (compared to crappy calling cards to Nepal) for some people but I love something that's really free.

All of things described above are procedure about how to call to Nepal.

Is it possible to have free call from Nepal to US with that device installed

you said yes, but have not described the procedure.

As far as I know you have to pay 3cents/minute on skype to call to US local number.

And in magic jack it will be free isn't it?

No matter which VoIP you use, we can not pass the shortage of power supply. May be laptop is an option as well small battery charger may be used to power up?

I am guessing Niel dai must have some plan about the regular power supply as he is planning to have a regular phone line available 24/7.

In the ring2skype website, one is required to choose country and a specific region. I chose United States but since the state I am in is not included in the list of regions, can I just go ahead and choose any region? Does it matter at all?

I heard, Magic Jack was sold free after mail in rebate too. If that is the case, simple and easy to use by our parents is PLUG in and Dial the number?

Magicjack is easy to use. You pay $40 for the first year and $20 there after for per year. Problem with it is that it needs to be connected to a desktop or a laptop to use. Which, by the way, it not practical solution for Nepal.

Like " _ " suggested on his/her posts, you are better off buying a Skype phone and use it along with ring2skype phone number. I am trying to simplify on what " _ " has mention on his/her posts.

1. register for Skype Id.

2. sign up for a phone number @ ring2skype. (sign up for a phone number where you reside in, ie US number if you are in the US, UK number if you are in the UK)

3. buy a Skype phone (one that does not require a desktop/laptop to use. like Belkin desktop Skype phone)

4. sign up for a ADSL line back home.

5. get a UPS back up to run your router and Skype phone ( so that the phone is live even during the load shedding)

6. plug your Skype phone into router and power it up.

7. Now you can call Nepal using the US local number associated with that Skype ID.

8. To call US from Nepal, you need to buy credit from Skype. (you can ask your family members to give you a miss call if they want to talk to you so that the Skype credit will almost never expire)

Your Costs:

ADSL line in Nepal: Rs. 900 per month for lowest bandwidth available plus one time router and UPS back up costs ( I have no idea how much these cost in Nepal)

Skype Desktop phone $80

SkypeOut phone credit $10

And be able to call home any time you want for free: Priceless : =)

Sangam, So with skype you do not need electricty and you do not need to turn on computer? And this skype phone does not need power, Is it like the regular phone with battery or without battery? I am comfused.

Yes, you do not need a computer to run a Skype phone. However you do need to power it up. That is the reason, you need UPS backup to keep your router and the phone running during load shedding.
