well i dont know abt that and its off topic but for greencard holder they get citizenship within 3 months instead of waiting for 5 years. but yea if you want to join just for the status you should go talk with a recruiter. they will give you a good advice,

Anyone who joins Amry get their citizenship within 3 months from what I heard and it also should not be green card. And to receive that citizenship or what ever status you get, you need to be in one piece and alive.

but just wondering devilwithin999 if that's true then wouldn't most students here join army i mean they get paid, citizenship, dont have to pay for college and get free education?

You will be shipped straight to Afghanistan after 3 months of basic training. You will be manning some remote out-post in southern if not in eastern Afghanistan.

Khaobaadi has the answer @Last_buddha

If you were entitled to be in th US then I would personally join army. But you will be in Iraq,Afganistan or any other country. You need to be in army for 4 years to leave and stay in the US. It simply means you need to survive for 4 years in those countries and I think that is impossible. Either you will be in IED or "Allah ho akhbar...slit.....". I think US govenment is trying to save their citizens and throw other citizens like you and me in that fire. As well as harrashment from fellow Americans in the army is a different story. So just be happy with what you have, study, get a nice job and a GC, fill out DV or marry a suka!

Joining the US Army under their new Pilot Program MAVNI that allows certain Visa holders - including F1 and H1 - is not a bad option. Its actually, a great incentive for many people. For accurate & precise info on the MAVNI program google MAVNI or visit Army recruiter in ur city, but here are some insights (i am not an Army recruiter, just have some things to share):

-the Army only recruits people with some "technical" knowledge for the MAVNI program - which means u need to have some technical skills like some profeciency :  in the medical field (nursing, radiology, lab, physical medicine), IT field (programer, data analyst etc), aviation tech, linguist, or anyone with special skills including Bachelors and Masters degree holders.

-the Army will first train you for abt 6 weeks in their "Boot Camp" providing Basic Military Training and then ship you to the technical school that u sign up for or the technical school that best suits u based on your evaluation and test scores

-after u graduate from the technical school, you will be assigned to ur first posting. Now, this posting DOES NOT necessarily have to be in the war zones like Afghanistan or Iraq. Remember - its the technical assigment for which foreigners are being recruited, so they carry out the technical specialities. Very FEW recruits under the MAVNI will have to serve combat duties & even though u might be posted in Afgan or Iraq, u will most likely carry out the technical stuff. Its a misconception that recruits under the MAVNI will be directly shipped to combat zones.

-the Army will process your citizenship right after join. After becoming a citizen, u will be eligible to apply for Officer with a Bachelors degree!

-Its a very fair deal worth trying out based on individual preferences. Many ppl from India, Nepal, and other South Asian countries have already been recruited under this program.

Good Luck to all those considering this program. This Pilot Program was inacted in NY, LA , and now is in the DFW metroplex as well.

To All Concerned....

For those of us who are in the pursuit of joining the US military in the hope of getting a US citizenship, please read the complete information provided in the following website. You will not regret to have read it. I urge each one to carefully weigh in and review thoroughly about the US military before making your final decision. Good Luck in making your informed, and righteous judgement. Just a suggestion.

Khukuri ko jamana gayo.. it was gurkhas but not now...

If you are a FPS game fan then it surely will help you..

As for surviving 4 years is almost impossible. In each and every danger, you will be pushed forward to face it. You can see those case in Nepal when only small sainiks were killed. That implies everywhere. They dont know where they are shooting and what are their targets. So, just forget about army if you want to be alive, make your parents proud, have a nice life. One more thing that I want to mention, even if you survive after 4 years, you will not be what you used to be.

I heard if you join military after you graduate i.e. without taking their money to graduate, then you can serve smaller terms like 2 years.

The program that US Army implemented calling for non immigrants like students or H1b holders who are in legal status to join US army was till DEC 2009 only, so it's closed for this year.

Probably they may open the similar one in upcoming days.

The contract period is 3 years. You will get the US citizenship. When you join US army, you don't care about ur F1 or H1 or whateva. you will get citizenship. After 3 years you may continue if you like or leave the army. By that time, you are US citizen if you are alive.

most of all posted above is rumor....army is recruiting f1s just for army supporting roles... after u are selected, u r given list of jobs from which to choose to... if u don't want to go into the battlefield u can choose food specialist or laundry specialist jobs.. there are whole list of jobs
and about posting to Iraq and Afghanistan.. its not true.. its true that u'll be deployed abroad but few nepalese who graduated training are sent to Korea...
if u graduate basic training which is 9 weeks, u'll be given citizenship within ten weeks
main obstacle is basic training.. so u need to be in good shape first
so if u can run 1 mile in 8 mins, 2 miles in below 17 mins, do about 45 pushups and situps and hv strong heart...go for it!
i think they hv extended the programme for two more months
but nepalese language quota is full.. maybe there are few open for urdu

I think the program is a fit for those of us who wanted to join previousely but were turned away by Army recruiters for not having PR or citizenship. Anyway, the program is closed as far as I know. Some of my friends wanted to join but did not make it in before the quota was full.
