Dear Dad,

Thank you!

Ø Thank you for paying 1/4th of your income for my elementary school fee when you had a wife and 3 more kids to feed, educate and shelter. I don't know how you did it? I guess I was too young to know.

Ø Thank you for buying us new clothes for Dashain and wearing that same polo shirt you had been wearing for a couple of years. I still remember how you looked that Dashain. I guess I was too busy to show the new dress to my friends and relatives that I never asked you if you liked to wear that faded shirt.

Ø Thank you for bringing that used HERO bicycle that I had wished for my 11th birthday. I guess I was in such a hurry to ride on it, that I didn't even bother to ask you how many hours of overtime you had to work to pay for it.

Ø Thank you for not leaving me alone for a single moment for a whole week when I was admitted to the hospital to cure my typhoid. Did anyone ask you if you were ever tired/sleepless? I didn't.

Ø Thank you for not traveling to see your sick dad so that you could save up the expenses for that first TV we wanted in our living room. Did you get to see your dad in his final days? I guess not, you were too broke to even call him.

Ø Thank you for smiling and hugging me when I said, "I hate you" for not buying me an 80 cc bajaj scooter when all of my friends were riding on Hero Honda Splendor. Were you really smiling? I guess not. Then tell me why did you go to your room and sob? I saw you dad.

Ø Thank you for sending me off to Kathmandu University for my intermediate studies, when I could've joined Tribhuvan University with fewer expenses. Do you have enough funds on your pension account now? I guess I wouldn't know unless you tell me dad.

Ø Thank you for not letting us know about your everlasting back pain so that you didn't have to go to the doctor. Does it still hurt? I guess so, because the only time I know you went to the hospital was when I was admitted for typhoid.

Ø Thank you for those tears you shed when you found out I passed my intermediate exam in first division. Are you still proud of me? I guess all parents are proud of their kids.

Ø Thank you for sending me abroad for my higher education even though I knew you couldn't afford it. Did you pay off your debt yet? I guess not. You are retired and you don't have any pension fund left for your so called golden (?) days.

Ø Finally, thank you for thanking me for my achievement. Let me ask you dad, do you think it's worth devoting your past, present and future for your kids? I guess I won't know unless I have my own kid(s).

Tears welled up to my eyes, Boulevard Dreams! What a wonderful reminder of what our fathers have done for us. But please do not repeat that one mistake he made when the time comes and he should not be thanked for doing so:

"Thank you for not traveling to see your sick dad so that you could save up the expenses for that first TV we wanted in our living room. Did you get to see your dad in his final days? I guess not, you were too broke to even call him."

We human beings are pretty selfish. We care more for our off springs than for our parents. All the devotion, dedication and love parents had for us does not go back to them but rathers goes down to our children. What an irony!

So, if you want your kid to not do what your dad did to your grand dad, please do not make that one mistake!

Maalpaani, yes indeed its a very reaistic picture of our typical nepalese family... But, you know what???IN our Nepalese family Mothers are regarded more precious than Dad, which is true to some extent but in fact not only mom, but also dad plays an important role in our family. I have seen lots of my friends who hate their dad. Even i used to hate my dad a little bit when it comes to his drinking habit but later i realized that how important and valuable he is. He was the only person for whom i cried a lot before coming to U.S. I dont know how to express him my love and gratitude but yes indeed he is the best.

Lets show our respect and love to our fathers. No matter what kind of issue you have with them just call them and tell them that i love you very much dad. May be they are waiting to listen to that3 words from you from ages and ages. So come on guys and gals, pick up the phone and make him a call.

Boulevard Dreams,

That is very noble of you but do not do to him what he did to his dad when you have kids:

"Thank you for not traveling to see your sick dad so that you could save up the expenses for that first TV we wanted in our living room. Did you get to see your dad in his final days? I guess not, you were too broke to even call him."

I strongly believe he should not be thanked for above.

Ya Chicagoan,

I strongly agree with you , he should not be thankful for what he did in that case but chicagoan think from the dads point of of view. He always want to give happiness to his siblings no matter what price he has to pay for that, isnt it. So, i guess in this case dad did the same thing. He sacrifices the opurtunity to see his dad just to make his kids happy with New TV.

But still you are also right. It depends on individual state of mind.

Hi Boulevard Dreams,

I respect what you are saying but I still strongly believe that people should not love their children so blindly that they neglect their parents. It is similar to that "doko" story if you remember. The son carries the parents in a doko and takes them to be thrown off the cliff. The parents ask why are you doing this although we love you so much; the son's reply is, I saw what you did to your parents when they got old and I learned from it and just doing what you exactly did!

So what's the point in having a son who buys TV for his children when his father is on deathbed? How could he forgot all his father had done for him? I think that is unforgivable and the son will carry that guilt throughout his life.
