Hi,

My friend is in H4 visa and she wanted to change her status in F1 while in US. How difficult/risk is there to get the F1 visa stamped in US Embassy back in KTM? Has anybody been in the similar situation before? Appreciate your help!!

If you came here in H4 and now got admission in school, which has offered you assistantship you will be OK. If you came here in F1 and then H4 or anyother visa and again want to go back to F1, you should have valid reasons to make your case. If you are just going to community college or expensive school without any assistantship, you might face some problem. If you want to go back nepal and visit family, then you go with your H4 visa and come here and then you can change F1. What is your situation?

The main reason she wanted to go back to F1 is to obtain SSN because she has applied for nursing license in one of the state boards and they're asking SSN. She did her RN back from Nepal and came in H4 visa. Now, she's thinking to go to school, obtain SSN and continue her education. In the meantime, her application will be in process to get US nursing license.

I know this is kind of complicated situation. Does anybody else know good suggestions?

Hello Delicate,

I'm in the similar situation now. I'm in H4 visa and want to go to nursing school. So, I need SSN to get into the program. Can you please share what happened to your friend? Did she get into the program? I'm looking forward to your reply..

Changing the status is not a big deal.

You can apply to USCIS with your admission certificate+ documents showing that u r in status till now in the eye of immigration and it will take about 2-6 months to get approved.

I did not understand why u were asking about getting F1 from US embassy in Nepal as it is USCIS office in US (mostly laguna Niguel office in California) that approves youe change of status and as long as u r in US u don't need to stamp your Passport.

In case of going to Nepal after u have started school there should be no problem bacause u being a H4 means you have someone in your immediate family (supposedly husband) who is H1 so u can show the income source to fund your education. So not a big deal.

Regarding SSN u need to find an on-campus job not only admission. Hope u know that already.

Good Luck.
