Dear Heartbeat,

The organization is real and exists. It was registered few monts back. I very much like your plans. I can introduce you to some of the reknowned Nepali education doctors if you are attending the ceremony. I do not have access to NPA's email to confirm if you have emailed there. I can send you the NPA brochure if you email. I have the brochure in pdf file but could not upload here.

If you are in Nepal, pls come to the Nepal Academy tomorrow.

Hi Bhunte,

Currently I live overseas. But I go to Nepal every year for about 1 month. I already have good friends and contacts to help me in this task. If possible, I can get a very dear friend of mine who lives in KTM to attend the function. Perhaps you can email me. Even if he cannot make it tomorrow, he can always meet someone reliable there.

This association was announced in hurry without much preparation, therefore, I doubt its outputs! Too many PhDs at one place without a real organized manifesto. There are too many too politically motivated PhDs whose sole goal is to get political appointments or to get fund for their Not for Profit NGOs. They could not even upload a PDF file, what will these guys do?

GP ji,

Uploading pdf file of more than 2MB file is the limitation. Anyway, I like your "Devil's Advocacy" type of comment. Without the inputs like yours the organization may derail. I salute you!

Thanks to those who could made the inauguration ceremony. Nepal Academy was filled with the Nepali PhD holders, and Kantipur TV covered the news very well that also included the "Janamat". Here is the piece of news in the Himalayan Times:

Hi Bhunte,

For your info, my dear fren was able to attend the inaugration ceremony at the Academy. He mentoned that there were hundreds of people. He did also meet some friends. Anyway, he's left his card with contact number and hopes to attend subsequent followup meetings.

Thanks Bro. Hope we all get a chance to work on something before my trip in September.

I don't see the point of concetrating PhD's in one place. They are needed in every organization. This is a sad affair to begin with.

Heartbeat,

That's great to know that your fren was able to attend the ceremony...

GP ji,

FYI membership is voluntary, and one is qualified to get the membership upon submission of the copy of PhD degree certificate, dissertation abstract, 2 PP size photos, and Rs 1000 (Rs 5000 for life membership).

21st century docs doesn't have to be expert in pdf operation, but s/he will definitely have added value.

Forming an association is a good start- helps to network with your peers and share ideas. Obviously, we are all quite aware of the benefits.

But I wonder whether a bunch of PhDs can really make a difference in alleviating the educational conundrum that continues to be marred by political instability, mismanagement, corruption, etc. So, I ask whether these are exceptional PhDs with years of real world experience as managers in the education industry- if not, then why limit the groups' membership to just PhDs. It is easy to understand why contributions from a diversified set of people are well regarded if the group is trying to tackle a societal issue. Perhaps, I do not quite understand the bylaws/purpose of the group. I am just thinking out loud here- as an expat, I am as quite interested as you in how a successful contribution to the development of education (no longer a misnomer on the root of success) can be made. But, like many of us, frustration has set me back many times over.

Can you please educate us- what is the group's strategy to produce talented graudates with steady infusion of young Nepali students into the current education system. Have we conducted a feasibility study. Do we understand the status quo- what hypothesis have we formed. And do you really yet need this group labeled as NGO to make it a success.

 JB,

I agree for the type of pessimism you have expressed about making any difference in alleviating for whatsoever things in the case of Nepal, but trying itself is not a bad idea. To my understanding, the organization was clearly initiated with the idea of networking among diverse groups of Nepali sholars and to adress contemporary issues as they are related to Nepal. It has already initiated towards those endeavors and some of you might have already noticed its activities in the prominent media limelight in Nepal. This organization is by no way a "dallar kheti garne ngo" as is steriotypically labeled to some elsewhere.

I am not sure of "exceptional PhD", but these scholars (as recognized by the nepali authorities) are just volunteering if something good can be contributed to the society in their capacities. Membership issue is just a technical one. It is very open to take views from non-phds like an expert in a profession.

As you have indicated in the last para of your writing, the organization has planned to help to produce talented graduates by providing academic resources, guidence, collection of past research works, etc., to the new scholars. I am not sure how far it can go, but hopefully it will do best.

Bhunte Bro,

How are you doing with this PhD association? I believe it must be getting better every day. Right?

Just after pressing the click button, I realized that why not this association has website using Tiki-Wiki CMS so that it gives jobs to its members to update their subjects and enrich the website and information.
