Hi

Has anyone bought a 64 bit machine ? If so, can you share your ideas...

I am mainly concerned if 32 bit applications still work on it or not ? For eg: are you able to install and work 32 bit microsoft office, visual studio, SQL server and so on ??

If I need to buy specific 64 bit softwares ( like visual studio, SQL server and all ) then it will really be pain..

It will be nice if you can share your experience...

Thank you'

One of my friends just bought one. I was trying to install Symantec Antivirus but I couldn't as it was a 32-bit version. I don't know about other softwares but I had trouble with Symantec.

64 bit machine should usually support 32 bit applications. It uses program files x86 instead of program files since program files is used for only native 64 bit apps. However, i'm not 100 percent sure. Try it.

Bhayena bhane, you can try a work around by creating a virtual machine (VMware) on top of the host machine. Install 32 bit operating system on your virtual machine and use your applications.

I hope it helps.

any reason why you are going for 64bit machine when you need to install (~all)32bit applications?
I have successfully installed 32bit Linux on 64bit machine and it works great. Not sure if you can install 32bit M$ OS on your 64bit box, but am optimistic.
Did you try installing those 32bit apps on 64bit OS? I hope M$ has 32bit shared libraries built on 64bit OS to support 32 bit apps. Give it a try!!

Likewise you can think of virtualization as a last resort.

As I know, you can install 32 bit applications on 64 bit system, as long as the machine is not running for resource-intensive environment (e.g. servers).

The only drawback is, system memory (RAM) is not utilized efficiently.. (i.e. two 32 bit words are not stored in one 64 bit word, instead, they consume two 64 bit word spaces with each word-space half empty).

So, it is not good, though there is no apparent issue.
